Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the role of Deputy Director of the Teaching School: Mathematics. Atlas is the teacher training and development arm of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation. It also leads on curriculum development for the core subjects and provides a range of school improvement services and leadership development across the network of schools in our Teaching School Alliance. The Atlas senior leadership team comprises 5 Atlas Deputy Directors, each adding additional resource and leadership capacity to a cross federation strategic group:

Deputy Director: English provides additional leadership capacity and resource to the cross federation English Curriculum and Assessment Board

Deputy Directors: Mathematics (job share) provide additional leadership capacity and resource to the cross federation Mathematics Curriculum and Assessment Board

Deputy Director: Primary provides additional leadership capacity and resource to the cross federation Primary Executive Leadership team

Deputy Director: Science provides additional leadership and resource to the cross federation Science Curriculum and Assessment Board

This vacancy arises due to the need to increase the capacity of our mathematics team and provide maternity cover for one of the two Deputy Directors: Mathematics who currently job share. For this role I am looking for an inspirational and credible candidate who is an expert in their field, with the drive and ambition to implement a coherent strategy for mathematics curriculum development and improvement across our 4, very different, school clusters. You will build upon the achievements of the mathematics curriculum and assessment board, ensuring that your fresh perspective aligns with the Federation’s 5 year strategy. You will be adept at developing strong relationships quickly and will employ sophisticated communication skills to influence others and bring them with you. You will be a strategic and innovative thinker with entrepreneurial flair who can mobilise and engage others for transformative change whilst contributing to Atlas’ development. You will demonstrate the tenacity, flexibility and ‘can do’ attitude necessary to have immediate impact in our schools. Summary of the overall purpose of the job The Atlas Teaching School is the training arm of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation Trust and the delivery lead of the Lewisham Secondary Challenge. It takes responsibility for professional development within the Federation as well as in the broader teaching school alliance that is growing from Lewisham to Lambeth and Bexley. It has responsibility for key elements of the Federation five-year strategy and annual plan specifically in the areas of curriculum development, talent management, professional development for staff and initial teacher training. Working as the Atlas Deputy Director: Mathematics as part of the Mathematics Curriculum and Assessment Board, alongside a Principal, Vice Principal: Curriculum and Assessment, Mathematics Curriculum Directors, you will be responsible for providing leadership capacity and support to ensure the continued development and improvement in mathematics across the Federation, The mathematics curriculum and assessment board has the delegated responsibility to devise and deliver the Federation curriculum for mathematics and develop assessment processes in line with the Federation assessment calendar determined by the Curriculum and Assessment Board that provide accurate information about the progress students are making through the curriculum. As a member of Atlas’ subject specialist team you will provide bespoke practical support, guidance and consultancy in each of the Federation’s secondary schools and to schools in our wider network. This work will be extremely varied, ranging from the development and implementation of rapid improvement programmes, devising and delivering masterclasses for students to coaching and mentoring of subject leaders and beginner teachers. As a member of Atlas’ senior leadership team you will devise and deliver professional development programmes, support succession planning across our school network whilst actively driving Atlas’ continued development.

Detailed Responsibilities

1. Provision of additional mathematics leadership capacity and support as a member of the Mathematics Curriculum and

Assessment board, ensuring this board successfully implements a coherent curriculum and robust approach to assessment that results in improved outcomes across the Federation.

2. Provision of mathematics consultancy and support within the Federation leading to improved teaching and learning in the core curriculum in the secondary phase in the first instance;

3. Work with school leaders in the Federation to increase leadership capacity for mathematics teams when needed

4. Contribute to the Federation Curriculum and Assessment Board (CAB), ensuring that the key objectives of the CAB

annual plan and the curriculum development priorities in the 5 year strategy are met

5. Leadership of the mathematics subject consultant team for the teaching school

6. Leadership of the strategy and delivery plan for improving mathematics outcomes at KS4 + 5 via the Lewisham Secondary Challenge

7. Provision of targeted and intensive professional development, consultancy and interventions within the Federation and

teaching school alliance

8. Design and delivery of a coherent marketing, recruitment and induction project leading to a defined number of beginner teachers gaining QTS and the recruitment of a defined number of qualified teachers

9. Design and delivery of subject knowledge enhancement programmes as part of the initial teacher training and

professional development offer

10. Delivery of a specified number of mathematics CPD training programmes

11. Modelling and disseminating best practice through leadership of subject networks, delivery of mathematics conferences and hosting of best practice visits

12. Leading action research and development programmes

13. Benchmarking of Federation practice against best practice locally, nationally and internationally

14. Delivery of the annual Federation conference, the Federation SLT conference and other similar activities to be determined;

15. Support the Director in developing and communicating a clear strategic vision for Atlas

16. Strengthening of the teaching school alliance in Lewisham and building it in neighbouring boroughs

17. Marketing of Atlas and its provision and development of new strategic and delivery partners

18. Through successful bidding for grants and through marketing products within the teaching school alliance, specifically

but not limited to teacher development programmes and core subject consultancy meet an annual earnings target to support the activities of Atlas

19. Ensure that Atlas Teaching School is financially robust and operates as a viable going concern

20. Evaluate the success of current programmes and recommend improvement strategies via periodic reporting

21. Contribute to the preparation of all Teaching School documentation, including the marketing materials, reports, impact evaluations

22. Model the values and vision of the Teaching School and the Haberdashers’ Federation of schools

23. Undertake other responsibilities as directed by the teaching school Director

This job description reflects the core activities of the role and as Atlas/the Federation and the post-holder develop there will inevitably be changes in the emphasis of duties. It is expected that the post-holder recognises this and adopts a flexible approach to work and be willing to participate in training.
