Thank you to everyone in attendance tonight and to ourvolunteer dinner committee that works hand-in-hand withASF staff to pull off this event every year. We’re grateful to have emcee Stephen Brunt with us again, and our guest speaker, a great defender of Canada’s oceans, the Honourable Brian Tobin.
We all remember the captured net of the Spanish trawlerEstai hanging from a crane in New York for the world tosee. Through bold action as Canada’s Minister of Fisheriesand Oceans, Brian Tobin shone a bright light on harmful, unsustainable fishing in the North Atlantic. Today, wildAtlantic salmon are squeezed by habitat loss, open net-pen salmon aquaculture, climate change, and still they areoverfished.
While much credit is due to recent federal governmentsfor initiatives like the Ministerial Advisory Committee onAtlantic Salmon and the new Atlantic Salmon ResearchJoint Venture, there’s still a need for bold action on mixed-stock fisheries and broad protections for unique rivers.
We must remember that reversing the decline of wild Atlantic salmon, even restoring historical abundance insome areas, is well within our reach. Commercial salmonmoratoriums, combined with wide adoption ofconservation angling practices, have contributed to anincrease in large salmon returning to Canadian riverssince 2000.
During the course of each agreement that ASF and ourEuropean partner, the North Atlantic Salmon Fund, havehad with commercial fishermen in Greenland and theFaroes Islands there have been measurable increases inreturns of large spawners to many North American rivers.
As our research team works to solve the mystery of highmarine mortality, to understand how changing oceansare affecting salmon, we must do everything in ourpower to let more fish return and spawn in our rivers. ASFis committed to both, and getting there is only possiblewith the support and encouragement demonstrated atevents like this.
Yours in conservation,
President & CEO, Atlantic Salmon Federation
WELCOMEFROM BILL TAYLOR, PRESIDENT OF THE ATLANTIC SALMON FEDERATION
