THE ARTISTRY OF VISIONARY CAST PAPER ARTIST

NKEVIN DYERhere was a time when art was not fashion or trend, but a

magical link to nature and our subconscious. I often use ancient imagery as a starting concept to riff off of. These mystical icons deep

in our DNA are the basis of my artistic vision. My medium is paper casting. To me is the perfect art form, combining drawing, sculpture, paper making

and painting is the process. Entirely self taught, this medium has been an evolutionary process that after thirty years has yielded many unique techniques and results. To create a paper casting I fi rst do a detailed drawing. Then I do a deep relief sculpture in wax on top of the drawing. A mold is formed off that sculpture and a pulp slurry of beaten cotton and water is hand laid into it. After drying I hand paint each paper casting with artist’s acrylics. I work alone at my studio and home in Marietta that I share with my wife and dogs. Every day is a joy doing the work that I was destined to do and I hope that energy is transmitted in each piece of my work. Please see all my work at www.castpaper.com

ong of Atlanta Show Chorus” is a group of over 100 Atlanta women who rehearse, perform, and compete in the female barbershop style. But this group of “classy, sassy” ladies is so much more! Incorporating excellence in music is a given, but then the group goes far beyond the ordinary with

themed presentations, complex choreography, exciting costuming, and lots of that fi ne “HOTlanta style.”Audiences can experience this vivacious group in their performance on Saturday, April 24 at

3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Titled “A Blast from the Past,” the program will be held at the Blessed Trinity Performing Arts Theatre in Roswell, GA. and feature the entire chorus, the award winning quartet “Moxie Ladies” and singer Julie Gribble. Tickets are $15 and $10.

The group has come a long way since its 1957 founding as a branch of Sweet Adelines International. Still a part of this organization, “Song of Atlanta” has developed into one of its most decorated, award winning members. Much of the success has come from the creative leadership of Director Becki Hine, a Certifi ed Showmanship Judge who has led SOA to thirteen regional championships and three international “top ten” medals.

Being a “show choir” has its charm and its challenges. Ms. Hine explains, “We don’t just stand there and sing. We incorporate visual plans, including some challenging choreography and facial involvement in order to communicate the message of the songs we sing. We also use entertaining emcee work to mesh our songs together into a complete package.”

Developing all of these elements requires teamwork. “We have a creative team that brainstorms ideas for a theme, and the infl uences are as varied as our singers. Then we begin to learn arrangements of songs that will fi t the theme. The visual team gets involved with costuming and choreography. All of our singers eventually become whatever character we have decided that they portray.”

“Most barbershop choruses use some choreography to enhance their musical delivery,” Ms. Hines continues. “Members of our front row are selected through audition, and their choreography is challenging! I love to create visual plans for the chorus that enhances the musical product.”

And what is Song of Atlanta’s “true HOTlanta style?” “We make sure that our classy, sassy image which includes costumes, choreography, song choices and high energy performances, refl ect the wonderful, eclectic style and buzzing energy of our city.”

NBAF (National Black Arts Festival) welcomed its new CEO and Executive Producer, Neil Barclay, to the City of Atlanta last fall. Formerly the Founding President and CEO of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh, Barclay brings a sharp sense of strategic direction, innovative thought and power of inclusiveness to NBAF. Barclay believes 2010 to be a year of tremendous opportunity for NBAF as it refreshes its brand identity and expands its year-round programming.

Since Barclay’s appointment, NBAF has begun its metamorphosis with the launch of a new website that refl ects its new brand identity. In addition, NBAF is “going green” in an effort to develop a sustainable model for outdoor festivals worldwide.

“I am very impressed with the arts community here in Atlanta, and I intend to work toward greater diversity and inclusiveness in the Atlanta arts community—to include a broader range of organizations in all discussions involving the arts,” said Barclay. “I am committed to fostering a sense of the arts ecology and an understanding of how the actions of one organization affect the other organizations within the arts community—even how the actions of a smaller organization can affect larger organizations.”

With over 30 years of experience in the arts and law, Mr. Barclay is a nationally respected leader and expert in African American culture, non-profi t law and arts education. His early work includes a career as a professional actor in theater & television, as well as management of Music Performance Services at Loyola Marymount University. He has provided strategic legal counsel to several non-profi t organizations and federal arts funding agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Advancement Program, the National Performance Network (NPN), the University of Texas Performing Arts Center and the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP).

he Allure of the Automobile,” at the High Museum of Art is the fi rst exhibition to correlate Auto design with major design movements such as Art Modern and Postwar Modernity at the time these

automobiles were manufactured. The exhibition will present 18 of the world’s rarest and most brilliantly conceived cars ranging from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, including masterpieces by Bugatti, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Ferrari. These cars combine state-of-the-art engineering, meticulous craftsmanship and groundbreaking design to create works of “rolling sculpture.”

The idea for the exhibition stemmed from a visit Michael Shapiro, the High’s Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr. Director, had to Paris during the three year exhibition partnership, “Louvre Atlanta” with the Musée du Louvre. When he exited his hotel one day, there were three exquisite American cars from this period on display out front. It made him think about how rarely we think about cars as highly defi ned and designed objects—especially those of us in cities like Atlanta when we drive hours daily in our cars.

As visitors view each section of the exhibition they will trace the evolution of the motorcar, examining the contrasts between European and American design, the infl uence of decorative arts and design and the signifi cant changes in automotive styling and engineering both before and after World War II. The featured automobiles have also won awards at prestigious world events such as the Pebble Beach Concours

d’Elegance, broken records on racetracks and were previously owned by noted car enthusiasts such as Hollywood legends Clark Gable and Steve McQueen.

“Until World War I, most cars had been utilitarian objects with one principal goal: transportation,” said Ken Gross, guest curator of the exhibition. “But as tastes and wealth coincided, designers could create and/or customize an automobile’s body, dramatically altering its silhouette and decoration and producing artful, one-of-a-kind objects. Lavish and often beautifully trimmed with aluminum, chrome, inlaid wood and lacquer, the streamlined silhouettes of the fi nest mid-century cars represent prime examples of Art Moderne design.”

After World War II, the industry shifted away from the lavish, expansive cars of the pre-war period toward smaller, more nimble sports cars. In Germany, companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche rose from the ashes of confl ict to present brilliantly conceived triumphs of engineering. The 1950s and 1960s saw the rise of fast and luxurious sport cars designed by talented engineers and brilliant coachbuilders, launching an era of Italian supremacy in car design into the second half of the century.

“The Allure of the Automobile” will be on view at the High Museum of Art until June 20, 2010. To learn more about this exhibition and the High Museum of Art you can visit www.High.org or call 404-733-HIGH.

JIM HENSON: Wonders from His Workshopexclusively at Center for Puppetry Arts

by Daniel Summers, Jr.

Jim Henson: Wonders from His Workshop, a unique exhibition featuring the Fraggles from Fraggle Rock, Sir Didymus Labyrinth, Big Bird from Sesame Street, Emmet and Ma from Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas, as well as pieces from Farscape, Dinosaurs and Sid the Science Kid is currently on display at Center for Puppetry Arts. The exhibit, which showcases a sampling of the numerous technological innovations created by master puppeteer Jim Henson, demonstrates how The Jim Henson Workshop and The Jim Henson Creature Shops advanced puppetry into entirely new realms by featuring puppets and ground-breaking technology from fi lm and television productions.

”My father, Jim Henson, was constantly experimenting with new technologies and forms; there was nothing more exciting than creating something that had never been done before,” said Cheryl Henson, President of the Jim Henson Foundation. “This exhibit showcases the creative and technological innovations made by him and his colleagues.” Supported by a cadre of extraordinary collaborators, Jim Henson famously assembled craftspeople, skilled artists, puppeteers, designers, costumers, sculptors, electronic and mechanical engineers, and creative writers who, by working together, helped to reshape the world of puppetry.

Jim Henson: Wonders from His Workshop is made possible by the generous support The Jim Henson Legacy.

Life imitates art. The arts are fundamentally important to life. The integration of arts in our lives promotes positive creative expression and personal development. Dance, theatre, music, and performing arts all allow the inner Soul to surface and be shared with others. When exposed to the arts early, children tend to fare better in school and develop stronger social skills.

Artistic Director, Andrea Nalls, has an apparently keen understanding of the need for children to be afforded the opportunity to express themselves. Phusion Performing Arts Alliance, brainchild and vision of Mrs. Nalls and her husband John Nalls, has grown from humble beginnings of three students to close to 100 children and young adults, and a company cast of about 30. Nalls’ love for the arts permeates every aspect of the school. Artistic instruction is offered in ballet, tap, hip hop, keyboard, theatre and more.

Phusion is not just a school, but an alliance of people working towards the mission and goal of enhancing the lives of the children and the community at large.
