Arjeplog is all about water. We have more than 8,000 lakes in the municipality or kommun and count-less rivers, more than in any other place in Sweden.

The lakes and rivers have been the basis for survival for ten thou-sand years.

The lakes are also an important factor in what has become the world’s largest winter test centre.

What might come as a surprise to some is that the water in the taps is not only supremely drinkable, but also very tasty.

It is now estimated that the first humans beings were living in this area about ten thousand years ago. Before that it was covered by a couple of kilometres of ice.

It was believed for a long time that the first people to move here, came from the south, following the melting ice.

In recent years, however, Ingela Bergman, Head of the Silver Museum and Associate Professor of Archaeology launched the theory that perhaps people came from the area that is now Northern Norway.

Because of the Golf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, Norway was free from ice during the ‘Ice Age’.

All through the ages, fishing has been an important ingredient for survival in the centre of Lapland. Hooks made from bone and horn and nets made from fibers made it possible to find food all year around.

Today, fishing is still an important source for many locals to get their food supply. For thousands of tourists fishing is a favourite past time. In fact, sports fishing is considered to be the most popular of all past times in Sweden.

In summer lakes and rivers in the mountain areas attract many visitors, but perhaps the most well known fish-ing grounds are the rivers surrounding the town of Arjeplog.

In winter, people flock to many of the lakes in the mountains north and west of Arjeplog, for snowmobiling, recrea-tion and ice-fishing.

In former times the lakes and the rivers provided easy (?) communication with the east coast of Sweden. In winter people skied or travelled by horse on the ice.

In summer rowing boats and later motorboats were used for the transpor-tation of people and goods. The rivers and lakes were also used to transport timber from remote forests.

Fishing during the summer in the streams around Arjeplog is very popular with locals and visitors. These people are fly fishing in the Vauka Streams.

In summer ‘Top of Arjeplog’ has become a very popular way of getting fantastic nature experiences and excercise at the same time.

The idea is that you buy a ticket where ten different mountains are listed. When you have skied or walked up to the top of one of them you check that mountain on your card. If you manage all ten you stand to win a nice prize. If you only manage a few tops you will still win the fantastic experience of getting up to the top of a mountain by yourself. That feeling and the spectacular views make a winner of every person who reaches the top.

You can buy a ticket at Granns hardware shop or the tourist office at the Silver Museum.

The technology involved in making roads on the frozen lakes goes back a long time. Several villages used the ice roads to make short cuts to important places.

In the beginning of the 1970’s engineers from Germany found a new use for the vast areas of frozen ice. It was, of course, the best possible way to test anti-lock brakes in a safe way.

In the beginning they had valuable assistance from the local flying club ‘Silvervingen’ and local aircraft com-pany ‘Turistflyg’.

Today six large companies provide excellent testing conditions for thousands of engineers from all over the world.

The locals are used to the fact that the water is so clean that you can drink it. The water in the taps in Arjeplog comes straight from Lake Hornavan. The intake is about 600 metres north of Hotel Hornavan.

This tap water is considered by many car testers to taste better than expen-sive bottled water and yet there are still those who prefer to buy bottled water.

It always brings a smile on the faces of locals when they see that so many car testers buy these bottles of drinking water when the best water is free of charge in every tap.

• Conti Teves in Arvidsjaur want to expand their facilities by Lake Arvids-jaur near the airport.

In order to do this they need a dispensation from the strandskyddslag or shoreline protection law which states you are not allowed to build closer than a hundred metres from the shoreline.

The law came about to protect the shores and beaches around Stockholm from exploitation. These laws seem totally ridiculous here, where there are hundreds of kilometres of empty shoreline per person.

Drive in the middle of the road! Locals often react when they see car testers driving very close to the side of the road.

The locals know that it is much easier to end up in the snow banks if you do not have space between your car and the side of the road. Also, the side of the road is not always level with

Locals do not usually keep to the side, unless they are meeting another car. When visibility is good it can be safer to drive in the middle of the road, then you have a little more margin if you suddenly have to make a small turn.

It is easy to go off the road, if you drive too close to the side.

What is good in Arjeplog?The people are very friendly and nice.

Nature and the surroundings are wonderful and I hope to see the Northern Lights while I am here.

I like Pizzeria Verona, the food is good, Apo and his staff give good service and we can watch sports events there.

I also like driving on ice and snow-mobling.

What is bad in Arjeplog?I miss my family. Also, the beer and other alcoholic drinks are expensive, compared to back home in England.

Travelling here from England and going back is time-consuming and not good.

What music you enjoy?Mostly anything, really - drum, bass and dance music.

What is important in life?My family and the children. Also, my football team.

It is important to take Life as it comes, to enjoy it and to make the most of every day.

Sometimes the swimming pool in the sports centre in Arjeplog is very crowded.

To make it easier for swimmers trying to get some exercise there is a new ‘traffic rule’. All swimmers must swim on the right side of the pool going north (away from entrance to pool) and then go over to the other side to swim back. In other words every swimmer swims in a anti-clock circle and collisions can thereby be avoided.

When you see this new sign by the start-ing blocks, then it is time to start going in circles.

Travelling to Arjeplog, you must have surely noticed the vast areas of land you had to cover just to get

here. The area of Arjeplog’s kommun or municipality is about 14,500 square kilometres, or sixteen times the size of Berlin. The population density, however, is only about 0.20 per square kilometre. If that was true for Berlin, the German capital would have a population of just 184. If Arjeplog was as densely populated as Berlin, a whopping 55 million people would be living here.

You have probably also noticed and read (on page 1 of this week’s issue of The Arjeplog Times) that there is

a lot of water surrounding Arjeplog. More than thirteen percent of the kommun is covered by water and there are 8,727 lakes. Lake Hornavan is 226 metres deep, making it the deepest lake in Sweden. There are also more than 3,000 kilometres of running water (rivers and streams) and a total of 20,000 kilometres of shoreline.

It is no surprise, therefore, that people have been living here from the end of the last glacial period. Archeologi-

cal discoveries suggest that the first settlements in the kommun are about 10,000 years old. Back then there were, of course, no proving grounds on which to test vehicles and their components, but the abundance of water, fish and forests made Arjeplog attractive long before anti-lock brakes and other such systems were the talk of the town.

Arjeplog is also known for its Saami population as well as a history of mining industry dating back to the

first silver mine in the year 1620 A.D. Some 300 years later, a young man, a medical doctor by the name of Einar Wallquist, came to Arjeplog. He was fascinated by the landscape, scenery and the people living here and he collected an impressive number of significant artifacts, the collection of which are very important for the history and culture of Arjeplog.

If the statistics I have mentioned above did not stun you, a visit to the Silver Museum and a journey back with

Doctor Wallquist, most definitely will.

Age: 28 (in April)

Family: Sambo, Håkan Ederlöv from Galtis and Revi. Father Per Gunnar Sundström, former mayor and retired chairman of SPGA (Swedish Proving Grounds Association), mother Sofi and sister Malin.

Home: Arjeplog, I was born here and have lived here my whole life.

Occupation: I work half time at the Kommun (municipality) at the Lärcentra*1 , co-ordinating education from universities in other places in Sweden and helping local students.

I studied mathematics and statistics (which I love) at the university in Uppsala, so sometimes I do work for the Kommun in this field.

I also work half time at Galtis, the ski resort, that is owned and run by my sambo, Håkan Ederlöv with help from his parents, Maria and Bengt. My work there is mainly in the restaurant.

I also work for Kraja and Silver-hatten, as a singer and piano bar entertainer. Twice a week I entertain the BMW event groups in the Hunting Lodge at Kraja.

Spare-time activities: I like to be outdoors in nature and

enjoy, picking berries and walking during the summer and autumn, and riding snowmobile and being outdoors in the spring-winter time.

I play guitar and piano and sing. Sometimes I write songs (especially for members of my family for their birthdays).

I am also an instructor in Spinning, Core and Aqua-gym for the Tränings-kompaniet, a local fitness company that organizes fitness and training classes.

What’s good in Arjeplog?There are many good things here. It is quiet, peaceful, and the surroundings are beautiful.

People are friendly and helpful. Life is simple here, easy and convenient in your everyday life.

It is close to everything you need and want to do. For example, after work, I can go shopping and do errands and be home with in 10-15 minutes. In a city, this would take much more time.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?I can’t think of anything bad at all.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of music: rock, pop, country, and I especially enjoy the music from the 80’s.

I also love the Melody Festival*2 , this year’s festival began last Saturday evening.

What’s important in life? My family and my friends and to be healthy.

Lärcentra is a local meeting place where students and sometimes teachers can meet. It is a place where distance students have access to facilities and equipment in the form of videoconferencing studio, comput-ers with internet access, group study rooms, photocopying, telephone, etc.

Stina gives information and helps students with whatever they need for their studies.

Lärcentra also arranges video conferences for businesses, so they do not have to travel to other places in order to meet and have a conference or listen to a lecture.

The Melody Festival competition is an annual music competition organised by Swedish public broadcasters Sver-iges Television and Sveriges Radio and determines the country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest.

It has been the most popular television programme in Sweden since 2000; it is also broadcast on radio and the Internet.

In 2012, the semifinals averaged 3.3 million viewers, and over an esti-mated 4 million Swedes watched the final (of a population of 9,5 million).

Galtis - not only for skiersGaltispouda is a nature reserve, the surroundings are wonderful and the scenery magnificent.

You can drive up to Galtis Ski Slope, 10 km from central Arjeplog, by car or by snow mobile just for an outing or to have lunch or ‘fika’ (coffee, tea, a snack). It is also nice just to watch the skiers, take a walk or look at the views.

Spy photographer Stefan Baldauf from Germany went to the police when car testers tried to chase him away.

Every winter there are clashes between car testers and photographers and most of those who try to take spy pictures are generally disliked. Sometimes it even leads to physical confront ations. However, some companies and car testers accept the spies as a part of their work with prototypes.

Last week German spy photographer, Stefan Baldauf parked his car near the barrier to the test road that leads up the Galtispouda Mountain. Baldauf walked around the barrier and waited for his prey. But the car testers did not appreciate his presence and they tried to chase him away.

Baldauf claimed that he had every right to be there. To find out what his rights are, he went to ask the police, who told him that he is allowed to walk up the road to Galtispouda and to take pictures of whatever he wants in that area.

In Sweden you are generally allowed to go and be anywhere in the countryside. This unique right of public access or Allemansrätten basically gives every

The law concerning photography in public places is very detailed, but gen-erally you are allowed to take pictures of anyone or anything that is in full view of the public. The only exceptions are protected objects, which can be military or other sensitive buildings or places. These places are clearly marked with signs.

So if your prototype is outside, anyone is allowed to take pictures of it. If, for instance, the photographer stands outside a facility he or she is allowed to take pictures of whatever is inside the fence.

Inside a facility, a restaurant, a shop or factory, however, it is the owner who decides if cameras are allowed.

A car (or whatever) standing outside a petrol station or parked in a street can be photographed legally.

So, the best thing to do, if you do not want your car to be photographed, is to stay out of sight of the photo graphers, who are often lurking around or hiding behind snow banks this time of the year.

During the sixties, Anna-Lisa Lund gren was a joint partner in a reindeer slaugh-tering business. The work was seasonal and she wanted to do something in the summer months as well. There were often a lot of reindeer horns, hides and dried meat over, so she decided to try selling these products to visitors, in Piteå, Jokkmokk and in Arvidsjaur.

This developed into a year-round business and she opened a shop in her home in Arvidsjaur. The business grew and she also started selling souvenirs and other local products both in the shop, which was extended and on the internet.

Ten tears ago, her daughter Åsa took over the business which, according to Anna-Lisa, was perfect. She taught Åsa about selling and Åsa was good at languages, which was becoming so important as many of their customers came from all over the world.

Now, Åsa’s daughter, Anna-Lisa’s grand-daughter, Matilda has been introduced into the business.

Three generations now run the three shops still selling reindeer hides and dried meat as well as a lot of other pro-ducts such as handicraft and souvenirs: the original shop at Stationsgatan 3, a small shop at Arvidsjaur airport and this year a new shop at Storgatan 17.
