2. ATHLONE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND

  • Founders Day 7 May 1926
  • Rev William Blaxall, Advocate Robert Bowen and Mary Currey
  • No school for blind in CapeTown
  • First School opened 7 May 1927
  • In Athlone named after the Earl of Athlone

3. ATHLONE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND

  • The first group of 7 learners included Isaac Jacobs (age 20)
  • He trained in the academic section and qualified as a piano tuner, became house-master at the school; became vice chair at the SA Nat Council for the Blind

4. ATHLONE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND

  • Isaac Jacobs at the age of 80 was awarded posthumously the prestigious R W Bowen Meritorious Award for the Blind for his services to society
  • Since 1927 there have been about 20 000 learners and it is anticipated that 50 000 learners will receive their education in the next few decades (now includes blind, visually handicapped, wheel-bound and multi-handicapped learners

  • entrance elaborated
  • roadways modified to serve site better
  • accommodation increased
  • retirement home incorporated as source of income
  • rented accommodation separated for security

  • The School is supported by the Dept of Education
  • The Board has undertaken the imitative to refurbish the school and hostels that will cost R100m
  • In addition, the Board wants to provide social housing on land they own for professional blind and sighted persons

  • The Board has agreed to a dynamic fundraising campaign which looks to access about R40 m over the next three to four yearsmore of that later
  • The current calendar has a prestigious Dinner Dance scheduled for the 7 may 2010

  • Formal Black and White with a superb buffet
  • Dance Band by Elginairs and Cricket memorabilia
  • Auction of a Cricket Bat signed by the current Protea Cricket team
  • Poster signed by Sir Ian Botham, one of the cricket greats of our time
  • Compere and Auctioneer is Jeremy Fredericks of MNet
