Athena has added 7 new programs over the last year, including 2 South American programs. A little bit about the organization: Athena Study Abroad was created to change the world! By giving U.S. college students the chance to study at smaller schools overseas, an intimate view of the world is available to them. A view that can break down barriers, open communication, and foster intellectual and personal development.

Who Is Athena Study Abroad?Athena Study Abroad was developed in an effort to bring students authentic study abroad experiences involving true cultural immersion, designed by knowledgeable, caring professionals.

What Makes Athena Different?Athena programs are different in that students are enrolled at small schools overseas in an effort to maintain the personalized service throughout the semester that Athena prides itself on providing.

Athena offers its students programs that are focused on intense, cultural immersion which puts them in touch with the locals of their host country, elements of the host culture, and other international students from around the world to ensure a well-rounded, diverse experience.

Why The Name ‘Athena’?We are named after Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. She represents the wisdom and strength that study abroad students gain while abroad. Wisdom comes from applying experiences to knowledge and this is just what study abroad accomplishes.

Why Choose Athena Study Abroad?PERSONALIZED SERVICEAthena prides itself on making each student a top priority.

SMALL CAMPUSES = TRUE IMMERSIONAthena works only with small overseas campuses to ensure true cultural immersion for all students.

COMPETITIVE PRICINGAthena keeps overhead low and passes along the savings.

PROGRAM VARIETYAthena offers programs on three different continents, in 19 cities during five different terms (Spring, Fall, Academic Year, Summer and January), which gives students over 100 different program options!

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLEAthena offers several scholarships each semester, worth up to $8,000 each! Athena even has money available for summer and January terms as well.

PRICE GUARANTEENo matter how much the dollar fluctuates in value overseas, Athena’s prices are in U.S. dollars and will not vary due to exchange rates.

EXPERIENCES INCLUDEDNearly all Athena programs include field trips or excursions.

GIVING BACK TO THE WORLDAthena promotes giving back to the world (a) by donating to world charities on behalf of each of our students, (b) by providing scholarships that are charity-based, (c) as well as by Athena staff volunteering

U.S. ACCREDITED TRANSCRIPTS AVAILABLEAthena makes U.S. accreditation available for many programs, which provides another option that ensures students can get college credit.

COURSES IN ENGLISHAthena ensures language is not a barrier, as almost all locations offer at least some courses in English.

“I would do it all again if I could. Thank you, Athena, for providing me with the time of my life”~ Peyton Collins, Chapman University

So many study abroad organizations: Why should I consider Athena?

Selecting a study abroad program is not a simple task. There are many options, with many different benefits. After a while, the options can start to blend into each other, leaving one wondering, “Who should I go abroad with, and why?”

One answer is to make sure you go with someone you trust. Athena Study Abroad has a vision to be a different type of study abroad partner, and the difference is in our values:

1. Excellence in Study Abroad. At Athena, we’re not only committed to great study abroad, but to a fresh assessment of what makes it “great.” We need to send a diverse group of students...which means prices need to be low and scholarships need to be plentiful. We need to see through the myth that an international school will provide great study abroad just because they are large or are well-known.

2. Small is Better.Educators have always known this. It’s hard to keep things personal in large-group settings. Bigger schools are less likely to treat students warmly and personally. Low student-teacher ratios make for the best education. Large groups of American students living together makes for a less-than-ideal immersion experience abroad. Study abroad orgranizations can’t give personal attention if they have too many students.

At Athena, we are committed to small. We intend to remain a small organization, working with smaller overseas institutions, while serving a small number of U.S. schools. We intend to limit our student numbers at our international sites. This may not be the most lucrative business model ... but it’s great study abroad.

3. We Will Change the World. The goal of what we should be measured by is the changed lives of the students we serve. Our hope is that students are moved by their new global perspective, and live their lives in ways that will help, shape, and improve our world. But it starts at home. So, we offer scholarships to students who are world changers before they go. We enlist them to be world changers while abroad.

We allow students to select the charity where a portion of their program fees will be given. We encourage students upon re-entry to give serious thought to how they can live differently when returning from abroad. And, the Athena staff, as a team and as individuals, is committed to serving our local communities through service projects and civic involvement. Audacious as it sounds ... we’re in this to change the world.

As a student you will have access to top notch libraries and museums unlike anywhere else.

When exploring London you will soon discover the culturally distinct character of the city. You can frequent these places in the many districts of London, all of which are accessible from your campus dorm room. Check out Athena’s website to discover more of what you could explore while studying in London.

About the SchoolThe University of Roehampton lies in the southwest area of London. Built in 2004, the university is one of the newest campuses around London, equipped with amenities and facilities for students of our globalized world. Though

new in construction, the foundation of Roehampton comes from a collection of universities dating back to the 1840s. The University of Roehampton is a perfect blend of traditional education mixed with modern facilities for the modern world.

The campus is designed to foster social interaction and learning as students come from all over the world for their education. Studying here means not only learning about London and its unique culture, but also learning about new friends from one of the 110 nations represented on campus. Combining internationalization and dedication to education, the levels of creativity, and new ideas have established a rich learning environment.

Roehampton simultaneously fosters a modern learning environment while being conveniently located close to entertainment for weekend fun. Just a few minutes from London’s hottest districts, there will be plenty of time for exploring the markets, museums and theaters that make London the world-renowned city that it is today. It is as easy as taking the ‘tube’.

Rhys will be your main point of contact in London. Rhys is part of a team comprised of professionals at the University of Roehampton who have years of experience working in the field of international education.

Rhys and the team are also always prepared to give advice and tips about personal travel on the weekends, as well as making sure the student experience is as positive as possible.

About the City

Dublin is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, a city layered with stories from a rich cultural history defined by relationships with all parts of the world. It has been called the largest village in Europe.

Perhaps the most literary city in the world, Dublin claims some of the greatest writers of the modern era. One need only venture into one of Dublin’s innumerable pubs to experience the Irish penchant for storytelling and spirited discussion.

About the SchoolAthena’s partner, Griffith College Dublin, is a highly respected private college in Dublin. A member of the Higher Education Colleges Association (HECA), the college offers students an opportunity to study in the center of one of Europe’s top cities.

The student body represents over 60 different nationalities, and this diversity will enrich every Athena student’s international experience in Ireland.

The school itself is located in the city center in a historic military barracks and offers a wonderful seven-acre campus for students to experience and explore.

Housing • Athena students receive priority housing in shared student apartments on campus.

• Most apartments have two or three bedrooms, thus three to six students generally share an apartment.

• Double bedrooms are standard.

• Each double bedroom is equipped with two single beds, two bedside lockers, two wardrobes, two desks, and two chairs.

• Each two-bedroom apartment has two bathrooms (one en-suite) complete with a toilet, sink, and shower.

• Internet access is available in every bedroom and living area.

• Each apartment typically contains a living area, complete with two 2-seater couches, table, cable TV, and the kitchen has a table and four chairs.

• Apartments are located on the school campus, so you’ll never be late for class!

• Athena recommends students apply early to this program in order to secure the best available accommodations.

Student Advisor Olwyn Mannix

Olwyn is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to information related to both Dublin and Ireland. Having run her own company, Over The Top Tours, for the past 18 years, she always has great recommendations for things to do in Dublin and places to go in Ireland.

She has an honours degree in History and Politics from University College Dublin (UCD) and a diploma in Law Studies from the Dublin Institute of Technology. Olwyn is married and has a daughter. She loves reading, traveling, sailing, culture, theatre, cinema, and music.

Student Letter

"The Irish locals in Dublin and

throughout Ireland have been some of

the friendliest people I have ever met.

Even when walking down the street,

a local will strike up a conversation,

and they are always fascinated to

hear that I’m from America.."

On-CampusRestaurantA state-of-the-art 350-seat restaurant formed part of recent college developments. The new facility incorporates a food court and a specialist Barista offering coffee and beverage vending. The restaurant also features a “Wok Station” where fresh ingredients will be chosen and cooked theatre style in front of you! Meal cards may be purchased, or students can pay per item.

Fitness RoomThe college has a fitness room available to all students in the college. The room contains various cardiovascular machines, most notably elliptical cross trainers, exercise bikes, treadmills, and weight machines.

ShopThe college shop sells a range of snacks and cold and hot drinks. The shop also provides photocopying/printing cards for college machines,

stationery supplies and daily newspapers at student rates.

Student Union FacilitiesStudent DiningNot all students wish to buy food from the college restaurant. As such, the Student Union (SU) building has a dedicated kitchen area for students who wish to bring in their own food from outside of college.

The area is equipped with microwaves, a boiling water dispenser, a sink, tables, chairs, and TV. The kitchen is located on the ground floor of the SU.

Pool RoomThe top floor of the SU is dedicated completely to pool tables. It houses six standard tables. It is extremely cheap and fun to play pool in the SU.

Common RoomThe Student common room is one of the more popular areas in Griffith College for students who are just looking to sit back and relax with their laptop (the SU is Wi-Fi equipped), watch some big screen TV, or relax with a video game.

What To Do in DublinThe school is centrally located and a short walk, bus ride or taxi ride away from many of Dublin’s best activities, such as:

• Temple Bar: This area features narrow, cobblestoned streets, and some of Dublin’s best night spots.

• Dublin Castle: The 800-year-old castle features some of the oldest architecture in the city.

• Guinness Storehouse: Learn about the 250-year history of Guinness, a globally recognized business based in Dublin.

• Entertainment: Theatres, nightclubs and pubs - Dublin’s got plenty of them for you to enjoy!

• Shopping: Grafton Street and Henry Street are two of the main shopping strips in Dublin.

• Outside of Dublin: Students can venture outside of Dublin to catch the beauty of the Irish countryside. In roughly 3 hours, you can reach Ireland’s west coast.

Athena also offers its students organized field trips every semester as part of the semester program fee. Available trips vary from term to term, however, a sample of past trips include:

• Weekend in Galway Enjoy gorgeous Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Limerick and more!

• Wicklow/Glendalough Day trip to these historic Irish towns

• Celtic Experience Tour Learn about the roots of Ireland

You will be provided an exact list of your trips prior to your departure.

About the CityThe city of Cusco sits perched amidst the clouds and the lush Andean greenery 11,000 feet above sea level, an everlasting legacy to Peru´s rich history. According to legend, a mythical monarch founded the city of Cusco at the beginning of the 13th century B.C.. Under Inca rule, the empire grew and developed.

Today, the city is surrounded by the wealth of its Inca history, while offering the comforts of a modern and internationally known town. Cusco’s people are welcoming and proud of their rich culture. This truly is an exciting place to live, enjoy, and learn Spanish.

About the SchoolWould you like to meet some of the greatest people in the world – who will become your friends for life? Then you should spend a session with the staff at Academia Latinoamericana de Español. You’ll not only enjoy their company, but you’ll also learn many cross-cultural lessons from Ecuadorians that could change your quality of life for the better.

Academia Latinoamericana de Español is a private, non-profit institution recognized by the Ministry of Education with the Peruvian government. The school sits conveniently next to many shops and just four blocks from the main square,

Academia Latinoamericana occupies a beautiful historical 19th century colonial house. It is located on one of the many small plazas in Cusco, called Limacpampa Grande, right behind one of the most important sites from pre-Colombian Cusco, the Qorikancha (Temple of the

Sun). The building houses 17 classrooms on two floors, an indoor patio, video room, auditorium, entertainment room, wireless internet access and an interior plaza.

Classes are held in small groups (maximum 5 students).

Housing HOMESTAYS

• Our host families belong to Peru’s middle class, although you should bear in mind that living standards in Peru are generally lower than in Europe or North America.

• Family homes are usually located no more than a 10 minute walk or bus ride from the school.

• You get a private room, unless otherwise requested.

• Two meals per day are included at the host family’s home (breakfast and lunch).

• Usually the bathroom is shared with the family or with one or two other students.

STUDENT RESIDENCE

• You also have the option to stay in a student residence, with a double room and a roommate.

• Meals are not included with this option.

Summer and January CoursesAthena offers 3-week, 6-week, 9-week and 12-week long summer programs, and a three-week January program in Cusco. Courses are taught in Spanish, but all students at all levels (beginner to advanced) can partake in the programs. Please view the “Courses” section of Cusco, or visit AthenaAbroad.com for a complete list and detailed course descriptions.

LocationAcademia Latinoamericana is conveniently located next to the main post-office, Internet cafes, banks, money exchanges, etc., and just four blocks from the main square, the Plaza de Armas, the central meeting area of Cusco (and a great place to people watch!). There are many restaurants, cafes, cathedrals and museums nearby. Classes are held in rooms decorated with typical Peruvian “artesanía”.

ActivitiesOrganized trips and activities are offered two to three times a week. These activities are optional and include for example: city tour, cooking class, dance classes, parties, videos, lectures, trips to museums, etc. Students pay only for their own transportation and entrance fees.

About the City

Aberdeen is Scotland’s third-largest city. For studying abroad, this is perfect - the city has everything you would ever need, but isn’t overwhelming.

Aberdeen itself is made up of two parts: Old Aberdeen, where the university is, and Aberdeen, where shops, theaters and entertainment is more accessible. You may find it easy to feel at home in Aberdeen. The people are friendly and down to earth and there is plenty to do in the city.

About the SchoolThe University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, is the UK’s fifth oldest university. The proud tradition is matched by its academic quality, as it ranks among the top institutions in the world, just below Ivy League Dartmouth College (source: QS Top University Rankings).

Students will be able to take a wide variety of courses. Science courses, which are often difficult to find abroad, are widely offered at Aberdeen, as well as the traditional liberal arts courses.

While the school has history around every corner, the campus is also very modern. Many

new buildings/renovated buildings on campus keep the school up with the technological times.

Housing • Students stay in on-campus housing in the Hillhead Student Village, where the student community can interact out

of the classroom.

• Students have single bedrooms and typically stay in 5-person flats. At times, students are placed in 4 and 7 person flats.

• Rooms are comfortably furnished with a bed, clothing armoire, and most rooms typically have a desk and chair. Students are responsible for linens (and can be purchased in Aberdeen).

• Shared cooking facilities are available to all students in the flat.

• The housing is in a safe area, with an on-site bus stop that gives students access to the rest of the city.

• Housing is about a 15-20 minute walk to the main campus area where classes are held.

Student Advisor Karen Gibson

Karen will be your main point of contact in Scotland. Karen is part of a team comprised of professionals at the University of Aberdeen who have years of experience working in the field of international education.

Karen and the team are also always ready to give advice to help make this experience as positive as possible.

On-CampusThe Old Aberdeen campus is the historic heart of the University and combines immaculately preserved buildings with state-of-the-art facilities for learning, research and recreation. The charming atmosphere is ideal for inspiring students while in Scotland.

On campus students enjoy the beauty of a historical building without foregoing any of the modern conveniences one would expect to find on a university campus.

The HubThe Hub is a modern three floor development full of places to eat, drink, shop and socialize. This meeting place also houses student support services, as well as study abroad student services.

Sports Village and Aquatics CentreAberdeen Sports Village is the premier sports facility in the North East of Scotland. It is open to students, staff and the public with facilities for athletics, football, swimming, hockey, squash, martial arts, boxing and more.

LibraryThe 8-story state of the art library opened in 2012. Costing over 57 Million Euros, this library is more than just books,

and incorporates technology, study spaces, galleries, cafes and more!

King’s CollegeThe univerisity started here in 1495, and the iconic building is still used today.

What To Do in Aberdeen• Entertainment: Aberdeen’s

vibrant music scene showcases both emerging new acts as well as headlining bands. The city also has great shopping, cinemas and well-known theaters.

• Athletics: If you’re into exercising or a sport, Aberdeen has great facilities for you. The Aberdeen Sports Village is the premier sports facility in the North East of Scotland. For a small fee, it is open to students, staff and the public with facilities for athletics, football, swimming, hockey, squash, martial arts and boxing.

• Great Outdoors: Aberdeen features green parks and open spaces, with a beach just east of the city and the hills not far away. Where else can you have lectures in the morning and ski in the afternoon, or sail, or wind surf, or hill climb, or canoe or...?

• Join a Club: The school makes it easy for you to be part of a community through the variety of clubs and associations you can join. To feel a part of Aberdeen, you can join one of the university’s 100 societies.

Part of the Aberdeen experience is getting out and about. For the semester program, one field trip is included in the program cost. Each semester the field trip options vary, but potential options include:

• Edinburgh, Scotland Visit the capital city and enjoy the incredible scenery and architecture!

• Glasgow Experience art, shopping, and nightilfe in the largest city in Scotland

About the City

The charming city of Heidelberg is an ideal study abroad location due to its deep, rich culture to learn from, a youthful and active vibe from the city, and easy access to many of Europe’s most sought after travel destinations.

When exploring Heidelberg you will soon recognize that it is a very active town, with nearly 100 activities and events going on each day. Bikers can frequently be seen throughout the streets, and shopping is a popular activity, with more than 400 stores along the main street. But it’s the people of Heidelberg that make the city so inviting, with their friendly demeanors on down-to-earth attitudes.

About the SchoolThe European Study Center (ESC) is a private institution centrally located in a safe residential area of Heidelberg. The University of the Incarnate Word in Texas provides the academic oversight and issues credits for the ESC program. All students will receive U.S. accredited transcripts.

ESC classrooms are located in the same beautiful building as the student residences. Students can enjoy the cozy feeling of studying in a century-old villa while benefitting from the convenience of state of the art classroom technology.

ESC is equipped with modern computer stations, comfortable classrooms, knowledgeable faculty, and diverse course offerings (from art history or history, to accounting or business).

Courses will combine lectures and discussions with on-site visits to European political and economic institutions, German and multinational corporations, and historical and cultural points of

interest. Students taking business courses that need to be AACSB accredited may receive transcripts from a U.S. AACSB accredited university (additional fees apply).

Cristina will be your main point of contact in Heidelberg. Cristina is part of a team comprised of multi-lingual professionals who have years of experience working in the field of international education.

“I love Heidelberg because this city never gets old. 38,000 university students call Heidelberg home and 17% of Heidelberg’s residents hail from around the world, creating a fantastic international atmosphere.”

“Paris is always a good idea.”~ Audrey Hepburn

About the CityParis. Just the word evokes feelings - whether you’ve been there or not. To actually get a chance to live in this historic capital means you will open your eyes to a whole new world, and a whole new way of viewing the world.

Paris is France’s largest city, and it’s filled with charm, character and plenty of things to do to keep you engaged. “The City of Light” is known for some of the best food in Europe, as well as its iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and Louvre Museum. By studying abroad in Paris, you will be able to study in one of the world’s great cities.

About the SchoolParis Institute of Creative Arts (PICA) was founded by scholars and artists who are passionate about their area of expertise and who are also strong believers in the incomparable value of the study abroad experience. Paris is a city of remarkable cultural wealth, and the PICA classes are designed to take

advantage of these great and vast resources that the city offers.

The Directors at PICA in partnership with Athena Study Abroad have collaborated with Whittier College in California to develop a study abroad program in Paris that serves to provide an immersive liberal arts program that is accessible to students of all academic, artistic, and French language levels.

Paris As Your CampusIn addition to the classroom and studio art space offered by PICA, classes will frequently take place in world class museums such as the Louvre or the Musée d’Orsay. Classes will also take place in some wonderful smaller locations such as the Marmottan, the Rodin or the Picasso which are elegant town houses from past centuries repurposed as intimate museums. Classes will also take place in the streets of Paris as students encounter architecture dating back to the Romans, through the Medieval and Renaissance per iods, up to the latest constructions by the most reputable architects in the world. The city can just ly be understood as a living museum.

One of the goals at PICA is to have the teachers, who have long been integrated into French and Parisian society, as guides to its students to

h e l p them find their way toward the parts of the Paris experience which will be most meaningful

t o t h e m . And because PICA keeps its class size limited,

students will receive special, individual attention from their teachers.

Program Director Michael McCarthy

Bitten by the travel bug, Michael spent his freshman year of college in Paris and hasn’t stopped exploring since (with two more stays to study in Paris and one in Rome).

Michael taught many years in the U.S., before moving to Europe and teaching for four years in Italy, two years on Athena’s Paros Island, Greece program, and for the last six years in Paris. Michael has been exhibiting his photos and art work in galleries and museums in Europe and the U.S. for more than twenty years. Michael is releasing a new book of photographs by Editions CDP in Paris.

What to do in and around Paris?• Get Oriented: After your on-site orientation in Paris, you’ll be taken on a walking tour through some of the historic central Parisian neighborhoods while getting an overview of French history, followed by a delicious lunch.

• Hike the Bois de Vincennes: The huge forest within Paris offers a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and reconnect with nature. • Jazz Club Night Out: The Parisians embraced American jazz long before mainstream America and there is still a great love for Jazz in Paris. Explore some wonderful jazz clubs where you can see some of the great contemporary jazz masters.

• Movie Nights: The French are perhaps the greatest lovers of cinema in the world and Paris is a cinephile’s dream city. One can’t claim to understand French culture if one doesn’t know about the classics of French cinema. Students will gather at least two or three times a semester to present French classics (with English subtitles) from Renoir, Truffaut and other great film makers in France.

• Louvre Museum: One of the world’s great museums with such classics as the Venus de Milo, Nike of Samothrace, Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s stupendous rebellious slave, Géricault’s Raft of the Medusa and countless other absolute masterpieces dating back, literally, thousands of years!

• Orsay Museum: If you’re a fan of 19th century painting and sculpture, this is one of the best collections in the world. Masterpieces by Corot, Courbet, Gauguin, Pissaro, Toulose-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Cezanne and many more.

• Nuit Blanche: In the Fall Semester only, the Nuit Blanche all night celebration of art throughout the city is a sight to behold, featuring many outdoor art installations.

• Summer Fun: Enjoy Fête de la Musique, a city-wide celebration of music with hundreds of free concerts all day and all night! Also, experience the Paris Plage, an event when the city closes down streets along the riverfront and transforms them into a beach with cafés, musical performances and more.

About the CitySalamanca, a small city of 165.000 inhabitants, is home of some of the most impressive architecture in Spain, and yet it remains a lively and dynamic community. The city is characterized by its unique yellow stone façades which fill the streets with color and light. The diverse architectural styles of its cloisters, churches and Renaissance palaces blend together in the streets and plazas of the old town. The striking engravings which characterize the Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, the House of Shells, and the façade of the university, all reflect Salamanca’s historical importance, proving it worthy of its prestigious title given by UNESCO as a “Mankind Heritage Monument”.

About the SchoolThe Pontifical University of Salamanca is a modern,

private, Catholic institution committed to meeting the needs of society. It was founded in 1940 by the order of His Holiness Pius XII to continue the studies of Theology and Canon law that the University of Salamanca had abolished in 1852. Currently, there are 5,000 students and a team of 300 professors, researchers and administration and

services personnel. The university offers 21 official degrees. Today, more than ever, we live in a world where there is an excess of knowledge, but also a great lack of understanding. We have developed technologies that make commercial activities easier

About the CityBarcelona is a one-of-a-kind city, truly one of the great cityies of the world. It is cosmopolitan and avant garde, located in the northeast of Spain on the Mediterranean coast. Barcelona’s culture represents the spirit of the different Mediterranean peoples that have formed its present personality. By studying abroad here, you will surely be impressed by its cultural heritage, and leave with a greater understanding of our globalized world. For studying abroad, this is perfect - the city has everything you would ever need, but isn’t overwhelming.

Barcelona’s mild climate and the diversity of the different landscapes of the Catalonia region provide students with a variety of opportunities to spend time on the beaches, in the Pyrenees Mountains, or visiting some of the most famous wineries and cava (champagne) caves of Spain.

With an approximate population of 1,600,000 people, Barcelona is the perfect place to spend a semester or an academic year as

a student. It is a city where you will get to know many other international students since the city is one of the most popular destinations for foreign students.

About the SchoolThe Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is among the best academic centers in Spain and the European Union, both for the quality of its teaching staff and for its excellent research. While the main campus is very large, hosting over 40,000 students, Athena only offers courses at the smaller branch campuses (around 1,000 students) in order to stay true to our mission of providing strong quality, and personalized educational programming.

The UAB is recognized and accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a granting degree high learning institution. The branch campuses at Sant Pau (Casa Convalescència) and the Eixample are located in the heart of Barcelona, just 20 minutes apart from each other.

You will take courses at The Casa de Convalescència, which is one of the buildings located within the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau grounds. This complex constitutes one of the late works of Catalan Modernism. This was also declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1978 and later named part of UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage for Humanity in 1997.

The Eixample Campus is located in the central part of Barcelona. It is very close to several Metro and bus stops, making access very easy.

Housing Students may choose from the following housing options:

HomestayStaying with a host family is a way to enrich student’s experience and to reinforce the knowledge gained during the program. We select our families carefully and have known them for years. All of them have extensive experience accommodating foreign students. Upon arrival students receive a key of the house so they may come and go as they please. Two daily meals are provided and one laundry load per week. Additional fees apply for homestay option.

About the CitySeville, the capital of Spain’s Andalusia region, is the artistic, cultural, and financial capital of southern Spain. Seville is a popular study abroad destination for many reasons, including incredible culture, fantastic weather, and friendly locals.

A city alive with music, dance, and energy, Seville is bursting with passion and electricity at every turn. A wonderful mix of trademark Spanish vitality and a mellow Mediterranean vibe, Seville is sure to have a spice perfect for every traveler’s taste.

About the SchoolAthena’s partner school, Centro de Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural (CLIC), offers students an opportunity to study at one of the top Spanish-language schools in Spain, in the center of one of Spain’s most exciting cities.

The school is based in a modern, fully-equipped, and refurbished historical mansion in the heart of

Seville, just a short walking distance from all the major places of interest including the Cathedral and Town Hall.

This unique program combines CLIC’s student-centered language courses with content area courses at the University of Seville, as well as a built-in academic and extra-curricular program in student’s focus area. Students will take a combination of language and elective courses during their semester abroad with Athena. Elective courses are available in both

English and Spanish.

Housing Students may choose from two housing options: student residence halls and Spanish family homestays.

CLIC Residence Halls • CLIC Residence Halls are located in the heart of the historical and

commercial center of Seville and are maintained by the school.

• The advantage of the residence hall is its multi-cultural environment where students from

various nationalities (German, Dutch, Japanese, etc.) live

together.

• Free wireless internet access is provided in all the residence halls.

• Students typically stay in single rooms, though double rooms are used when

necessary.

• Each residence building, shared by between six and fifteen students, is fully equipped

and includes a kitchen, a large living room, and all

necessary facilities.

• Once-a-week room cleaning and bed linen change are

included.

Spanish family homestays • Spanish family homestays are the ideal option for

students wanting a true language and cultural

immersion, as well as a Spanish family atmosphere and

home-cooked meals!

• The families that host our students are selected on several

criteria: location, quality of the lodging, and the family’s

willingness to meet the special needs of international students.

Summer and January CoursesAs well as semester and academic year programs, Athena offers 3-week, 6-week, 9-week and 12-week long summer programs, and a three-week January program in Quito. Please visit AthenaAbroad.com for a complete list and detailed course descriptions.

About the CityQuito is a remarkable city that infuses South American, European and indigenous elements. The World Heritage List – a primary authority on recognizing locations of significance – declared Quito as its first city on the list.

As you explore the city, you’ll see why. The Old City is rich with history, charming windy streets, and excellent shopping and eating. Quito is a marvelous contemporary city with all the modern amenities you would expect in the U.S. But the primary reason Quito is such a great location is the people. Ecuadorians are warm, honest and service-oriented people who truly enjoy welcoming foreign visitors to their country.

Academia Latinoamericana de Español is a private, non-profit institution recognized by the Ministry of Education with the Ecuadorian government. The school sits in the northern part of Quito.

Academia Latinoamericana is housed in a beautiful colonial building with an interior patio, 21 classrooms, video room with amplification equipment, library, teachers room, auditorium, solarium, cafeteria, multipurpose indoor court (racquetball, volleyball, speed soccer and basketball field), internet service, access and bathroom for wheelchair use, elevator, nine classrooms with digital connection for interactive participation.

Classes are held in small groups (maximum 5 students),

Athena includes a field trip/excursion pack for students at no additional cost. The Quito team will organize many optional evening and weekend activities in addition to these excursions that are INCLUDED in your Athena package. Trips vary each term, but possible trips include:

• Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World)/Equator Line

• Weekend Cloud Forest trip

• Otavalo Market• City walking tour

LocationThe school is located in the North of Quito, right next to La Carolina Park, a large recreational area where Quito goes to relax outdoors. On weekends the park is buzzing with soccer matches, volleyball games, skateboarders, outdoor aerobic classes, paddleboats, family games and picnics.

Several of Quito’s major shopping centers surround La Carolina Park, including Megamaxi, Plaza de Las Americas, Quicentro, El Caracol, CCI and El Jardin. These shopping malls offer a variety of both local and imported goods as well as supermarkets.

The Ecovia bus line, which crosses the whole city of Quito, is set within half a block of the school. Buses cost 25 cents and taxis around $1-$2.

Quito is the capital of Ecuador and thus offers the best travel connections to anywhere within the country. A half-hour flight to the East takes you to the Amazon Basin, while a two-and-a-half hour flight to the Galapagos Islands, the site of Darwin’s inspiration.

International Atmosphere Another wonderful aspect to this program is the opportunity to meet students from all over the world. To

date, the school has hosted students from more than 25 countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, France, China, Japan, Thailand, Russia Finalnd and more!

About the ProgramAthena’s Japan program, running during Kyoto’s fetival month of July, is an enchanted cultural and artistic pilgrimage. The program will visit some of the most beloved sites of Kyoto, as well as often overlooked destinations, which will ensure a well-rounded immersion experience within Japanese culture.

CLASSESThe classes are held on site, or in a classroom setting at the accommodation, and expose students to both the traditional and contemporary spirit of this vibrant island nation. In addition to class time, specialized photography instruction will also take place during the excursions.

EXPLORING JAPANESE CULTUREThe program begins with a traditional meal of Kyoto cuisine at one of the many lantern-lit restaurants along the riverside. Students then discover artistic traditions and crafts that have evolved over centuries, from woodblock printing and ikebana, to calligraphy and Manga.

Days will be filled exploring historically rich neighborhoods like Arashiama, or walking the Philosopher’s Trail

through temple gardens in Northern Higashiyama. The program will continue on with visits to unique Japanese treasures. Students will see the largest wooden structure in the world, and the Kyoto Gion Festival month, a street celebration in traditional dress and music.

About the School

Athena’s partner institution, Hellenic International Studies in the Arts (HISA), with its main campus in Greece, has expanded to the Far East. The institution brings together an interaction between students who desire more than a traditional lecture format, and talented teachers and artists who wish to share their experience and knowledge. The Athena/HISA Kyoto program coordinator is a native of Japan, and all participants have the benefit of her intimate knowledge and access to this tight-knit culture.

Class enrollment is minimized to ensure that students can receive special, individual attention and will benefit from a close working relationship with their instructors.

Housing Students will have comfortable housing during the program. Students should expect double-room accommodations.

CourseAll participating students in Athena’s Enchanted Japan program will enroll in the following course:

Digital Photography JournalAimed at encouraging creativity, this course will emphasize a sense of visual language in contemporary photography using Kyoto, and its environs, as inspiration for new work.

About the Island

The picturesque island of Paros is considered to be one of Greece’s most beautiful island treasures. Located 60 miles southeast of Athens, Paros is part of Greece’s Cycladic Islands. Approximately13,000 people reside on the island.

Paros’ traditional villages of white-washed houses, narrow streets, flowered balconies, beautiful churches, and hilly, vineyard-covered countrysides create the perfect backdrop for a study abroad experience of historic proportions.

About the SchoolHellenic International Studies in the Arts (HISA) brings together an interaction between students who

desire more than a traditional lecture format, and talented teachers and artists who wish to share their experience and knowledge, all set in the historical and classical landscape of Paros Island, Greece.

Drawing on extensive and diverse backgrounds in university teaching and administration, Fulbright programs direction, and international art and academic seminars, HISA has now synthesized its experience into a single, unique, and creative learning environment. Each course in the HISA program has been carefully organized to meet university standards, and all core courses carry three units of semester credit each.

Class enrollment is minimized to ensure that students can receive special, individual attention and will profit from a close working relationship with their instructors.

Semester Highlight: Turkey Students attending the Paros Island semester program have the opportunity to take part in a unique 7-8 day excursion to Turkey for just 350 Euros. Students will visit three cities that are hidden gems: Cappadocia, Selçuk, and Ephesus.

Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has a landscape almost entirely sculpted by erosion. The city dates back to the 4th century and is known predominately for its abundance of underground cities.

Selçuk is an ancient sea-side town complete with Byzantine ruins and a beautiful surrounding countryside. Selçuk is one of the most visited tourist destinations of Turkey, with great proximity to Ephesus. Ephesus is considered one of the best–preserved classical cities on the Mediterranean. PLEASE NOTE: This trip will take place, weather permitting. Alternative trip destination is Instanbul, Turkey.

Program Director Barry Tagrin

Barry, who earned his master’s degree in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University, has had a substantial teaching career that has led him from Texas to Japan to Spain and beyond.

He has exhibited his paintings worldwide, read and lectured internationally with the Fulbright Commission, and held classes and workshops in Poetry in venues as diverse as Japan, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Egypt, and Mexico.

He is a poet as well, and his latest book is entitled Collage of the Soul.

About the ProgramThis 2-week January program in Thailand allows you to experience many hidden pockets of an ancient society. Students will get to experience Thailand’s world-famous city of Bangkok, as well as the smaller island feel of Koh Samui.

CLASSESThe classes are held on-site, or in a classroom setting at the accommodation, and expose students to both the traditional and contemporary spirit of this vibrant nation and ancient culture. In addition to class time, specialized instruction will also take place during the excursions.

EXPLORING THAI CULTUREStudents will fly directly to the program’s home base on Koh Samui Island, only an hour’s flight away from Bangkok, but a luxurious world apart, set in the magical landscape of the Gulf of Thailand.

A few hidden gems Athena students will discover during their stay are the Big Buddha Shrine, the Wat of the Mummified Monk, the 18-arm image of Guanyin - the Goddess of Mercy, and the Full Moon Festival, the most massive beach festival in

About the CityStudying abroad in beautiful Florence, Italy means living in one of the most artistically and culturally rich cities in the world. From the regal Renaissance and Medieval architecture of the buildings that line the city streets, to the priceless works of art that line the walls of the Uffizi gallery, beauty and culture surround you at every turn in this richly diverse city.

With one of the largest international study abroad student populations in the country, Florence is a perfect blend of old-city tradition with modern-day energy.

What to do in Florence?• There are exceptional recreational opportunities both inside and outside the city. These can include visits to historic sites, social

activities (e.g., dinners at characteristic local restaurants to sample Italy’s exceptional cuisine), seasonal festivals, theatre, concerts, and much more.

• Florence has a large number of private gyms and dance studios popular with visiting students, as well as facilities for track, basketball, soccer, swimming, and other sports.

• Athena’s Florence programs frequently offer free activities, such as seminars on Italy and Italian culture. A wide variety of subjects are included such as history, geography, literature, food, folkloric events, music, and cinema. These activities include guided visits to the most important monuments, churches, and museums in Florence, as well as Italian movie screenings.

• Additional activities may be offered at an extra-charge such as excursions to different locations in Tuscany, dinners in typical Florentine restaurants, and opera and theatre events.

• Students will be informed at orientation and throughout the semester about available social and academic activities.

What to see in Florence?• Ponte Vechhio: A famous bridge crossing the Arno river that houses

many shops.• Piazza del Duomo: Home of Florence's cathedral, called the Duomo,

which is topped by a dome. • Baptistery of San Giovanni: Dates from the 6th to 12th century, is

considered Florence’s oldest building.• Uffizi Gallery: One of the greatest museums in the world.• Piazza della Signoria: Where one can see the proud Palazzo Vecchio.

Built in the 1200s, the palace is now the town hall. • Accademia Gallery: Visitors from all over the world come to see Michelangelo's statue

of David.• Museum of the History of Science: See the compass, celestial spheres, and telescopes used by Galileo.• Boboli Gardens: Florence's most famous park. • Palazzi (palaces), piazze (open squares), churches, statues, and museums are some of the other sights awaiting Florence

visitors.

“I was born in Syracuse, Sicily. At the age of 18 I moved to Florence to continue my studies. Living and working in Florence has allowed me to be always in touch with international cultures in both my work environment, and my leisure.

“I strongly believe that any kind of adjustment to different environments and cultures can be deeply enriching from both an academic and individual perspective. I enjoy working with students because it gives me the opportunity to help young people to make the best of their study abroad experience.”

About the City

The classic and historic city of Rome is one of the most ancient cities in all of Europe. The capital of Italy is a cultural treasure chest of Christian, Medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance influences.

Rome itself is a piece of art that captures the journey from antiquity to modernity. While wandering through the open-air markets and outdoor cafés of the city’s wealth of piazzas, it becomes evident that Rome is a colorful mosaic of peoples, cultures, and nations.

About the SchoolAthena and its partner school Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM) offer a unique educational option: a small, personal campus in a big city. The mission is to give students quality academic experiences that will open their minds to new ways of thinking through their exposure to the city.

Students are nurtured throughout their academic program by close, one-on-one attention from the school’s staff and faculty. The school promotes and facilitates cultural exchange with local people, and continually works to ensure an all-absorbing experience of growth and discovery through academic and cultural development.

Students have the opportunity to collaborate with a wide variety of professionals as well as several national and international institutions located throughout Rome.

Housing• Students live in double rooms in shared student apartments.

• Most apartments have two or three bedrooms; thus four to six students generally share an apartment.

• In each apartment there is a fully-equipped kitchen and a living room.

• On average there is a bathroom for every 4 students.

• Apartments are furnished and equipped with bed linens, basic pots and pans, kitchen utensils, washing machine, and TV.

• Although apartments are of the same standard and have similar facilities, no two apartments are alike.

• All of the apartments are easily accessible to the Metropolitana and other local public transportation. Apartments are no more than 15-30 minutes via walking or public transportation from the school.

• Athena recommends students apply to the program early in order to secure the best available accommodations.

About the TownThe walled Etruscan city of Tuscania is a charming, medieval town nestled in the Italian hillside outside of Rome. With a population of around 8,000, Tuscania residents have a strong sense of community.

Tuscania’s close proximity to many of the country’s other famous cities (Rome, Siena, Florence) conveniently positions students within reach of several of Italy’s other wonders.

About the SchoolThe Tuscania campus of Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM) is

a private institution located in the old town center of this charming medieval city.Classes are held in an ancient building which underwent a full internal restoration in 2005, aimed at combining the elegance and history of old Italy with the updated design and technological elements of modern day.

LdM is equipped with modern computer and

language labs, comfortable classrooms, knowledgeable faculty and diverse course offerings: from language or art, to archaeology or fashion.

One of the primary missions of Athena is to promote global education through authentic cultural immersion programs and a diverse international student population, and this makes the program in Tuscania perfect for Athena students!

Housing• Options include shared student apartments or housing with local

families.• All options are within a short walk to the campus.• Many of the housing locations are within the historic town center.• Athena recommends students apply to this program early in order

to secure the best available accommodations.• Homestay availability and needs will be discussed upon enrollment.

• Additional fees apply for the homestay option.

Apartment Option Details• Double rooms are included in the program fee (a few single rooms are

available at an additional cost on a first-come, first-serve basis).• Although apartments are of the same standard and have

similar facilities, no two apartments are alike.• Housing is complete with living area, 2 to 3 bedrooms,

bathroom, and fully-equipped kitchens where students can prepare their meals.

• Kitchens and bathrooms are usually to be shared with other students.

• Apartments are furnished and equipped with bed linens, basic pots and pans, kitchen utensils, washing machine, and TVs.

• NOTE: Archaeology program has special housing. More info is available upon request.

Student Advisor Mei Gontran

“I was born and raised in Paris, and I came to Tuscania over 30 years ago. Working at the school gives me the opportunity to share my Tuscanian life experience with students.

“My role as student advisor is very rewarding; students all get very close to the local people and to the town itself.”

About the ProgramAthena students are invited to enroll in the Tour of Italy program which enables them to study in three unique Italian cities during one semester abroad. The program is in partnership with Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM).

Students spend one month in Tuscania followed by one month in Rome, and then complete the experience in either Florence (Fall Semester) or Venice (Spring Semester). They follow a structured and integrated program of five 3-credit courses, which together comprise both a unique investigation into the roots of Western civilization and a grounding in modern Italian language and culture.

Each of these locations offers amazing resources for studying the history of Western culture from the age of the Etruscans to the Renaissance. The program is conceived as a historical journey through these civilizations, retracing the steps of our European forebearers and exploring the monuments they have left behind.

Course options have been designed to draw on local themes and resources; at the same time they also offer students the opportunity to experience some of the widely contrasting realities of Italy today. This is an intensive program of study, with a significantly different rhythm from that of the traditional semester program abroad.

About the CitiesTUSCANIA: The walled Etruscan city is a charming, medieval town nestled in the Italian hillside outside of Rome. A rich collection of Italian, Etruscan, and church history, Tuscania in many ways seems untouched by time.

Because of the city’s smaller size, students are able to gain an authentic Italian cultural experience in this preserved city.

ROME: The capital of Italy is one of the most historic locations on the planet, and holds a cultural treasure chest of Christian, Medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance influences.

Rome is itself a piece of art that captures the journey from antiquity to modernity.

FLORENCE (FALL): Studying abroad in beautiful Florence means living in one of the most artistically and culturally rich cities in the world.

From the regal Renaissance and Medieval architecture of the buildings that line the city streets, to the priceless works of art that line the walls of the Uffizi gallery, beauty and culture surround you at every turn in this richly diverse city.

VENICE (SPRING): The seemingly mythical “City of Water” in northeastern Italy is truly out of a fairy tale. Venice is composed of 18 small islands connected only by bridges, ferries, and the city’s world-famous gondolas.

Venice, which was once a sovereign nation, exists as a center of commerce and art. This incredible and unique city is sure to capture the interest and imagination of any student.

ROME: Student apartments are usually composed of 2-3 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The bedrooms are double-occupancy rooms. Kitchens and bathrooms are usually shared with other students.

Apartments are located roughly 15-25 minutes from the school.

FLORENCE (FALL): Accommodations consist of shared student apartments. Student apartments are typically composed of 2-3 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living room. Most of the bedrooms are double-occupancy rooms.

Apartments are located 10-20 minutes walking distance from the school and city center. VENICE (SPRING): The student apartments are usually composed of 2-4 bedrooms, bathroom(s), a kitchen and a living room.
