*IMPORANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS:
Assign your most definite RSVPs and outgoing guests to the required characters and the more tentative, shy/reserved guests for the optional characters. To figure out who will be a ‘definite RSVP’, it is highly suggested to send a ‘save the date’ email out to your prospective guests way in advance of the party date so you can either eliminate those guests from your list who can’t make it (and therefore you will not assign them to a character) or you can change your party date if enough required-character guests simply cannot make it. It’s suggested to invite more than the required number of players as any of the ‘required’ guests could cancel at the last minute and leave you high & dry. You can play as many optional players as you wish and in any combination that you choose. The optional players have the same materials and same participation level, but these optional characters are not ‘mandatory’ for the storyline to play out and therefore for the mystery to be sleuthed appropriately.
What happens if one of your required characters cancels on you at the last minute? First, take a deep breath…it’s not the end of the world.
FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME.
NAMETAGS the player nametags are below. There are alternative nametags for gender for the characters designated as ‘either’ gender. We suggest that you either print and place into plastic name badges (optional), laminate and punch a hole and use a lanyard to wear around the neck (optional) – or the most economical and trouble-free way is to adhere fabric-safe adhesive (i.e. double-sided Scotch tape) to the back once they are printed.
HOST DIRECTIVES Get ready for an awesome holiday party with your purchase of the murder at the tacky sweater shindig game from MyMysteryParty.com! This party is an entertaining and comical mystery where the players act the roles of hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. This is an excellent choice for your next get together during the holiday season–or anytime you want to dress up and have fun! The story is set in a holiday-inspired metropolis called Holly Hills. The event location in the story line is in Snowflake Manor – a historical bed & breakfast - but you can host it at any location such as a home living room, backyard (weather permitting), castle, hotel ballroom, hotel suite, recreation center room, etc. The party can be set in any space—all you need is holiday décor (i.e. holly, LED candles, Christmas tree, etc.) and voila—you’re ready to go! The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round. We offer envelope packs with four different colors for sale on the My Mystery Party website in the Party Props section (aka: Prop Emporium). A more economical method is to scroll the clue cards and secure with a ribbon—we show you how to do this on our How to Host video: http://www.mymysteryparty.com/howtohovi.html Make sure to read these host instructions for each round prior to the party to ensure you have everything in place for the big day! Please note - the host instructions for each round do not disclose who the murderer is, but do not read nor even look at (because you may read by accident) the Round Three cards if you want to keep the murderer a surprise. (The victim is disclosed in the Round Two clue cards, so don’t look at those, either.) Have someone else prepare round two and three if you absolutely don’t want to know who the victim or murderer are, or…..see below…. UPGRADE TO A PARTY READY PACK: For a complete surprise, you can elect to upgrade this download to the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the MyMysteryParty.com site. The upgrade is located in our side navigation bar and says ‘upgrade your download to a boxed set.’ This option will include the clues in labeled envelopes and the rest of prepared game documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor, etc.). This upgrade removes the original price of the download and charges you the difference between the party ready pack and download version of the game. For example, if the Party Ready Pack is $125, and you have already purchased the download for $30, the upgrade would cost $95—thereby removing the price you have already paid for the game. Let our staff take care of preparing this kit for you! Bonus games may vary, as well as design, but the overall storylines, format and mystery content are the same. OPTIONAL PROPS: We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including authentic crime scene barrier tape, crime scene balloons, Bic mystery investigation pens, white face makeup for the victim, victim t-shirts, etc. These are all optional but are fun enhancements to your night/day of mystery. During the party, your job as the host is to ensure that the envelopes are given to the guests at the appropriate times and most of all—you and your guests are having a blast!
HOST PLAYING A CHARACTER ROLE: We definitely encourage our hosts to play along! Choose any character you wish to play. Everyone should have fun! If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues. If you want to avoid being the victim or murderer, simply choose an optional player to play. For a complete surprise, get a party ready pack upgrade as discussed above and the clue cards will come to you, ready to go!
THE GAME IS ORGANIZED INTO FOUR ROUNDS AND IS STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWS: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS: these optional pre-game task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way.
ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. You can serve appetizers and cocktails for adults.
ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests.
SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and dessert (again, it’s optional to serve dessert)
Note: you do NOT have to serve dinner/dessert, this is only suggested and the instructions tell you ‘when’ to serve it and what to do around the time you serve it. You can simply skip both without a problem and just serve snacks/appetizers the entire time. However, please don’t have a party without offering some type of food—even if it’s just snacks.

INVITES & OPTIONAL PRE-GAME
INVITING GUESTS: Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your Mystery Party —
YourMysteryParty.com/tacky website or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they have the character descriptions included. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party, watch the game trailer, and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuths’ can spend some time studying the Your Mystery Party site prior to the party. If you are using an expansion pack, you’ll need to go to YourMysteryParty.com/tacky—as this page will include the expansion pack players. The free, downloadable invitations are located on the item page where you first purchased this game. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file. Fill in your information in the text fields and either print or save to your hard drive. You can email these invites to your guests to save paper costs. You will need to enter your information in the text field and save one on your
hard drive for each player, changing the character to be played on each invitation. Alternatively, either email this link or use any eVite site and simply include the link to the Your Mystery Party guest invite site at YourMysteryParty.com/tacky(or there will be other addresses that include expansion pack characters – see expansion pack files for details). There are no spoilers on this page for your guests. IMPLEMENT YOUR PRE-GAME: This optional pre-game round is to be implemented approximately one week
before the party. Please note that this round is designed to generate pre-game excitement and is not

ROUND ONE—IT’S PARTY TIME! DÉCOR: Create holiday ambiance with garland, festive Christmas lights, wreaths, Christmas tree(s), large, wrapped boxes to look like gifts, etc. Also, take a look at our Pinterest Page (MyMysteryParty) for some DIY options. GUEST ARRIVAL: Appetizers can be served (optional-cocktails for legal-aged adults). The guests’ instructions and the character descriptions should be available for the guests to review. You can formally go over the instructions once everyone arrives. As an alternative, creatively display the clue-containing envelopes on a table for the guests to locate their own character names but don’t allow them to take clue cards from future rounds! Don’t forget to take both individual pictures of your guests and a group picture once everyone arrives - they’ll all want copies of these! A great party souvenir is to print these pictures during the party on photo paper and slip into creatively designed frames (you can make them out of cardboard or purchase actual frames).
FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME.
PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready. • If any of the bonus games are played, you will need to collect the items needed in advance of the game. • Round One Clue cards printed and slipped into envelopes that are labeled for each character playing the
ROUND TWO—DINNER HOUR PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign, Scotch tape (host supplied), white non-toxic face makeup (optional and host supplied but funny and suggested), and also include the victim t-shirt and / or authentic crime scene tape if you have purchased these items from our prop store (again, optional but funny and suggested). If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The victim will be instructed in their clue card for round two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink (see further host instructions below for the post-murder part of this round regarding the victim). PRE-ROUND TWO: You can serve dinner (dinner is optional). You can simply take a break and eat dinner but tell your guests to remain in character! They are allowed to mingle / talk about things during this time, but since each will likely sit with a subsection of the group, it will be limiting – and that is all right – you’ll give time for everybody to mingle once the official round begins. You can pass out their clue cards before/after dinner – it won’t make a difference. PRE-MURDER ROUND TWO: PASS OUT THE ROUND TWO CLUE CARDS: Pass out the envelopes for round two to the guests and encourage them over the next 15 or so minutes to mingle while implementing their 'pre-murder' reveal clues for round two.
FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME.
THE INVESTIGATION BEGINS: As stated above, once the victim is ‘discovered’ and the laughter dies down, read the sign on his/her chest to the group. Encourage the guests to implement their 'post-murder reveal clues' and share truthful information and opinions that they have regarding the murder. Most would have already viewed their post-murder clues, and again, that is great. Super sleuths will be ready for the investigation and the energy will remain high. This part of the investigation should take about 15 minutes, but don’t rush, as it is important. The post-murder clues are only in the story line. There will be references to ‘where’ the players were when the murder happened, etc. In no way were these players supposed to stage themselves in the proper place during the pre-murder phase of this round, therefore, the clues are all in story land. It would be far too daunting to try to stage everybody ‘where they were’ during the murder and it would be chaotic – so don’t even try it. If you must, make an announcement that all post-murder clues are in story land and it is what happened, as everybody remembers it.
PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready! • Clue cards for Round Two in labeled envelopes. • The forensic analysis report in an envelope

ROUND THREE—solution round
OPTIONAL ACCUSATIONS: after you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests to one-by-one accuse who they believe the murderer is and how they did it. Instruct them to also tell the group their guess of the murderer’s motive. If you are having an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available on the My Mystery Party site in the mystery props section, you can use this round as the final decision maker on the best actor/actress award.
FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME.
Any of the optional bonus games can be played at the conclusion of the game (see the bonus game instructions.)
A few of your guests that have unfinished story lines will have fun interactive endings on their solution cards. No intervention is needed, just allow them to read their cards and present their story ending to the group. PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready!
• Clue cards for Round Three in labeled envelopes. • Any of the optional bonus game activity props (see bonus game instructions). • Optional award certificates
HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY GUEST INSTRUCTIONS
You’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most awesome holiday costume and have been told to play your role. Now what? The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has happened.
FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME.
From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing a gift wrap specialist riddled with scandals—that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information.
OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS The following tasks are completely optional and exclusion of them does not alter the mystery in any way. However, it does lead to pre-game build up and excitement! Cut the task strips (below) out and slip them into envelopes and send about 1 week prior to the party. Be sure to fill in your guests’ preferred contact information on the task slips so they will be able to contact each other. The usual method of contact is via email. Write Not Applicable / NA on contact info blanks for characters that will not be played in your game. If you are using an expanded team with Clark Griswall you’ll need to fill in the duplicate players’ information on Clark’s card.
Character 0 For some pre-party fun, you can contact (email, phone, etc.) the
following guests in the week leading up to the party: Contact the guest playing Howie Langston and say you hope he can find a Supersonic Man doll for his son. You’ve heard they are sold out in all of the surrounding cities – not just Holly Hills! (Contact info :___________________________________________________________________________) Contact the guest playing Roxy Rudolph and say you can’t believe she is thinking about retiring from ice skating. She is your absolute favorite ice dancer! You always watch the Olympics – you have nothing else to do. (Contact info :________________________________________________________________________) Contact the guest playing Scut Furkus and say you received a flier from Furkus Fudge in the mail the other day. You tossed it in the trash. You will never forgive Scut for bullying you during your childhood. You don’t care that s/he has reformed—s/he is still Scut Furkus! (Contact info :___________________________________________________________________________) Please note: either contacting the guests above or deciding to skip these tasks will not alter the mystery or anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead to excitement about the party and will encourage other guests to read about the other characters and be prepared for some completely mysterious fun!
Every player will have a card in the purchased game. Names removed
character P - ROUND ONE CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND
During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information: • Talk about how you are very desperate to find a Supersonic Man doll. You have found tons of his sidekick
– Nitro Boy – but your son doesn’t even want a Nitro Boy because in the Supersonic Man show, Nitro Boy doesn’t have any real powers – he is a really lame character! You’ve gone to every store in town, every store in the adjacent towns – and cannot find one online. You have no idea what you will do.
• Speak to Carol Knight about how she likes living next door to Martha May Bells. You heard that Martha May tries to compete with everybody in the neighborhood with having the best Christmas decorations. That would drive you nuts!
• Talk about how Cousin Eddie’s Cookies is your favorite bakery, however, you just read an article in the Holly Hills Daily about how people are getting sick when they eat there. You’ll never go there again.
• Speak to Ginger Starry about how she got the job as display design manager. You understand she had only worked at Nogstrum’s Department Store for six months.
• Speak to Carol Knight about her clientele at the nail salon – does she like all of her clients? • Speak to Martha May Bells about if her poodle Max will lead the parade on Christmas morning in town –
the Holly Hills Christmas Parade. He has led the parade the last 8 years and it will be strange if he doesn’t! PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL
−−− You know that Ginger Starry bought the last 5 dolls that arrived on a late shipment to Nogstrum’s Department Store. They were never even put on the shelves – she purchased them when she saw them arrive in the warehouse because she knew she could get big money for them by selling them on eBay. She has sold all but one on eBay and has earned 1K for each. She got greedy, however, and is selling the last one with a minimum bid of 5K. You can’t afford that. You need that doll, however.
Every player will have a card in the purchased game. Names removed to prevent spoilers
ROUND TWO CLUES Cut out the clue cards, slip into envelopes and label with the character and round.
character s - ROUND TWO PRE MURDER CLUES TO REVEAL & TASKS TO PERFORM: • Tell a few others about how stressed Clark is that the entire family of 43 people is in town. You are glad to
get away from some of them – the others were left at home (the Griswall house) to fend for themselves. • Go with Clark to tell Character D that he knows she was on the focus group that his company’s executives
put together for his edible toothpaste that doubles as breakfast. She was the only one who opposed the product and even threatened to ruin the product via social media if they decided to ignore her opinion and pursue the product. Clark will never forgive her – it was a great invention, and she prevented Clark from getting a Christmas bonus – now the family can’t go to Disney next year!
• Tell everybody Clark doesn’t care that he put up so many Christmas lights that power outages occur in the neighborhood – it is all in the spirit of Christmas. The petting zoo arrives by the morning and you’re sure the neighbors will throw a fit – but you don’t care!
• Clark’s wife (Ella) and Character L got into a big brawl at Nogstrum’s Department Store because Ella wanted to purchase a sweater off a mannequin and she wouldn’t allow it. The customer is always right – she needs to learn that!
POST MURDER: Clark did leave the room about 4 minutes before the body was discovered. You’re not sure where he went,
but he was gone for a few minutes. You never left the Silver Bell Ballroom once the party started. You would be shocked if your fingerprints were on the murder weapon – you’d have no reason for it. Clark doesn’t seem like the type of person that could murder someone. The killer will obviously lie to throw everybody off – so speak to everybody to get the full story.
Every player will have a card in the purchased game. Names removed
Example Time Line The game can be shortened by excluding the optional activities, or lengthened by adding
more bonus games. 7:00 PM: Guests arrive, have their pictures made (optional) and receive a refreshment / cocktail for adults. The guests will view the guest instructions and character list while they wait for everybody to arrive. The host should build in at least a 10 minute cushion for guests to arrive late. Hey, it happens. 7:10 PM: The host reads the guest instructions to the group. It is optional to have each guest introduce their character in front of the group. Play the video game trailer on Your Mystery Party for your game &/or read the game synopsis from Your Mystery Party to the group to give the premise. 7:20 PM: The Round One envelopes are handed out and the game begins. The guests mingle and reveal the clues on their clue cards. It’s just like a normal party, but the guests remain in character and gossip about each other’s characters. The motives & story lines will start to unveil. 7:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played. Bonus activities keep the energy flowing and the guests have a blast. They are optional, but highly suggested. The players must remain in character. 8:05 PM: Optional to serve dinner. Dinner can be sit down or buffet – or even as simple as a pizza that’s delivered! You can also just serve appetizers/snacks during the party. 8:35 PM: The Round Two envelopes are handed out to the guests and pre-murder clues are discussed. 8:55 PM: The victim becomes the victim and the host passes out the investigation sheets to the players. The guests interrogate each other to determine whodunit. The full story is in the player clue cards, but the guests will have to be skilled at asking the right questions of each other, etc. 9:10 PM: The forensic analysis report is revealed and within ~5-10 minutes, everybody submits their formal guess of whodunit. 9:20 PM: Optional accusation round – the guests can take turns formally accusing who they think did it, and why. You’ll be surprised at how everybody’s inner actor will surface during this activity. 9:30 PM: Dessert and coffee (optional) are served and the Round Three envelopes are handed out to the guests. The guests sit in a circle and one-by-one, the solutions are revealed by each of the guests and the murderer will confess at the conclusion of the round. The murderer is notified in their round three solution card that they are the murderer. They will not know or have any advantage over anybody of knowing whodunit before this round. *If you do not opt to have the optional players read their final solutions in front of the group, give them a few minutes to mingle and share their solutions. Or, if you are playing with expansion pack players, you’ll need to have time for them to mingle and share their solutions – a great time for you to get the awards ready! 9:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played. 10:10 PM: An optional award ceremony. My Mystery Party has award certificates of all kinds that you can choose from in the Prop Emporium. The host can determine who receives the awards while the bonus game is being played. Some awards are traditional and some are snarky but hilarious! 10:30 PM: Game over!
