SAFETY NOTESThe la s t week o f training fo r the F irst Aid
Competition has arrived and due to the time spent on th is p ro
ject and the pressure of other duties, the writer has been unable
to prepare the usual a r t ic le .
Do you fellow s rea lize how mauy inju ries some from the
operation o f a hind o f equipment we a l l use a lo t and know or
should know how to operate sa fe ly .We mean abrasive wheels -
grinding wheels. Every plant, every shop that works motel or uses
too ls has them.
Now and then name fellow wants to do some side grinding and
doesn’ t have a wheel suited to i t . The flanges are too big fo r
this Job; so he takes one o f f and puts a smaller one or maybe
just a nut large enough to hold the wheel .That’ s rea lly a fo o l
thing to d o .I t throws the wheel o f f balance and causes
overspeeding to boot because he flanges give the wheel most o f Its
support. And side grinding on a wheel not meant for i wears the
wheel away where i t most needs i t s fu l l strength - Just beThe
accident reports show that nearly
a l l in ju ries come from unsafe practices 0 wheel explosions
cause most o f the deaths end serious in ju ries . Yet a
non-defective, properly mounted wheel, run at the speed fo r which
i t was designed and properly used, w ill not exp lod e .It ’ s
abuse that does i t .
Overspeed is usually the result of some fo o l mistake, the sort
o f thing that ju st a l i t t l e forethought would prevent. It»s
easy to check the maximum speed a wheel should treval. The
manufacturers recommended safe speed is shown on the wheel i t s e
l f .
Portable wheels are apt to get a lo t o f punishment.A fellow in
a hurry is l ik e ly to slam the machine down or f a i l to make
sure i t has oorae to a fu l l atop before he does put i t down A
lso, portable wheels f a l l o f f things easily ,and someone’ s
apt to run into the cord and give the wheel a tumble. So have a
safe place for that portable , and be carefu l how you lay i t
down.At a bench you can uae a specie! holder .Make sure that no one
can tr ip over the cord.
yond the flanges.
The eyes su ffer most o f the in juries reported from use o f
abrasive wheels There's no such thing as a wheel toot won't throw
partic les - that is , I f i t cu ts . Even a water spray may not
ca tch them al l . Mass shields help a lo t by deflectin g the p
artic les down ward, but some bounce back o f f the too l being
ground or the tool rest . No matter what the setup, no one has any
business doing a grinding job without eye protection . We'd a l l
rea lize that f a c t , i f we only knew how many p artic les o f
steel and wheel f ly o f f from even the smallest Job and I t we
could see those particles with th eir sharp, Jagged edges. So
ALWAYS wear eye protection when you use an abrasive wheal.
That's not a l l there ia to safe grinding,but we've covered the
main points. I f you always follow them, you won't go far
wrong,
C. Church,Safety Engineer.
The follow ing notes on grinding safety formed the theme o f a
fiv e minute safety talk published by the nations; Safety Council.
They should be remembered and u t iliz e d here by everyone who is
required to do grinding ,
I f you mat So gouge a chunk out o f a wheel,a l6-incber»aay,
move the to o l rest out about an inch, and go ahead with grinding a
big nick out o f a 12-inch ch ise l .There* s a good chance that It
w ill catch between the rest and wheel, and y o u 'll get your chunk
of wheel right in the breadbasket. If you want to avoid accidents
lik e these, keep your rest up c lo se , as c lose as you can
without i t s touching.
