N E W S L E T T E RFrom the PrincipalFederal Government changes create uncertainty for school funding Over the last week you will have heard significant discussion in the media about school funding and its potential impact on Catholic schools in particular.

The Catholic education sector is concerned the Federal Government has, to date, been unable to provide the necessary detail to allay concerns about potential funding changes.

We remain committed to a funding system that is fair, needs-based and transparent.

While the package as announced includes a base funding increase beyond what had previously been proposed by the Federal Government, it also alludes to a number of changes to the existing funding system which may impact on the overall level of funding to Catholic schools.

We are confident, however, based on the Minister’s comments, that there will be no reduction in the quantum of funding to Brisbane Catholic Education.

Some key points of concern include:

• The absolute failure of the Federal Government to consult with the Catholic sector before announcing its proposed changes

• The lack of detail and so a heightened sense of uncertainty about our future funding position• Proposed changes to the funding model which will potentially alter the way in which

government funding is allocated and which may therefore impact on our funding levels.

The Catholic education sector has urged the Federal Government to urgently meet Catholic education representatives to provide more detail about how the proposed changes will impact on schools, teachers and parents and to negotiate a fair and acceptable outcome.

We will provide further information as it becomes available.

Happy Mother’s DayWishing all our mums and grandmothers a Happy Mother’s day for Sunday. I hope the children spoil you. Thank you to our Parents and Friends Association for their organisation of the Mother’s Day Stall this week.

God bless

Please contact the school if you have any questions about NAPLAN or your child sitting any of the NAPLAN tests.

Concerns about your child. If you have a concern about your child’s academic or social/emotional needs, then please contact your child’s teacher as first port of call. It is always best to clarify any miscommunications or information that has gone home with your child. When the teacher is aware of concerns or issues then strategies can be put in place to help all students involved. If there are issues that can’t be solved by speaking with the class teacher, then please contact the office to make an appointment to speak with me. Sport NewsStudents who successfully met the South Burnett qualifying times for Cross Country were given notes this week to participate at the upcoming South Burnett Cross Country selection trials being held in Murgon on Tuesday, 16th May. Could you please return these notes asap to assist with having our team list accurate on the day. Please also note that for all South Burnett events places are limited and whilst the College can select another child to take the place of someone who will be absent on the day we need advance notice to ensure other students do not miss out on their opportunity if your child is not able to make the event.

The South Burnett Winter Sports Carnival for all of Year Four to Six students will be held at various locations around Kingaroy on Friday the 26th May. All students are required to attend and if not currently able to participate are very welcomed to come along to spectate and support their friends. Information should be coming home early next week.

Congratulations to Patrick Hoult who recently went away to Cairns for the State Under 15s Rugby League Championships representing our greater Wide Bay region.

Music NotesUpcoming Coming Events

• Friday 19 May – Secondary Vocal Ensemble day tour to Forestview and Castra Aged Care facilities

Eisteddfod Round-UpThis year, our Eisteddfod team consisted of 278 students, all of whom were wonderful ambassadors for our College, and showcased the depth and breadth of our Music programs. Our results:

• Year 1&2 class choir - highly commended• Year 3 class choir - highly commended• Year 4,5&5/6 class choir - 4th place• Year 6 class choir - highly commended • Year 4 String Immersion orchestra - 1st place• Secondary Vocal Ensemble (own choice) - 2nd place• Secondary Vocal Ensemble A (own choice hymn) - 2nd place (tie)• Secondary Vocal Ensemble B (own choice hymn) - 2nd place (tie)• Guitar Group - 2nd place

Some students entered the Eisteddfod independently, and have advised me of their results. I was able to see most of these young performers in action, and all were very poised and polished.

• Lydia Penny: 2nd place, two 3rd places and a highly commended (all vocal solos)• Aaron Zammataro: 3rd (solo piano), 3rd (contemporary piano), 1st (popular

song), 1st (musical theatre)• Liam Zammataro: 1st place (Grade 2 trumpet), 1st place (beginner trumpet solo), Highly commended (vocal solo)• Giaan Zammataro: 1st (vocal nursery song solo)• Amelia McCarthy: 3rd (solo violin)

• Zoe Hoare: 1st (solo cello)• Mrs Amanda Reinbott (SMCC parent): highly commended (two vocal solos).

The Adjudicator, Mrs Kelly Wilson, made a special point of encouraging our choir and guitar students to enter into solo and small group sections in 2018.

String Immersion – Farewell, Year 4, hello Year 3!Our new scheduling of the String Immersion Program (May - May rather than calendar year) has paid dividends with the Year 4 class winning first place in the Beginner Ensembles section. Of course, this also means that String Immersion is now concluded for this group, and the Year 3 class will be starting their violin lessons in the coming weeks.

Mrs Jo Kennedy, our very talented Strings Tutor, has sent lesson enrolment packs home with all Year 4 students. I strongly encourage Year 4 families to consider continuing lessons for their child, as the children have made such great progress this year. Mrs Kennedy is also able to offer tuition on viola, cello and double bass, and is willing to start a primary school String Ensemble should families be interested. Please return your enrolment form and instrument hire form from the pack, or contact the office for forms.

Thank youI would like to extend my personal thanks to all staff, parents and carers who assisted me to prepare our students for the Eistedd-fod. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs Sarah McCarthy for helping with stage management, Mrs Felicity Dascombe for assisting with hair and makeup for our Year 4,5 and 5/6 choir, Mr Neil Hutton and Year 6 student, Sam Perrett (guitar accompanists), and Mrs Michelle Rutley for organising the quite complex transport of 278 students and staff to and from the Town Hall. Thank you, also, to all parents and carers for your invaluable support. It was a true team effort.

Yours in music,Mrs Jane IszlaubMusic Coordinator
