Designed for the challenges of our timeAmerican society and the world’s challenges have shifted dramatically over the last 50 years, but many universities have hardly changed at all.

Justice and Social Inquiry faculty are recognized as leaders in the interdisciplinary study of justice—known nationwide for offering a comprehensive study of justice in all its forms.

Faculty expertise is focused on five core research areas:

As a master’s student in justice studies you’ll pursue foundationalcoursesintheoriesofjustice,researchmethods,policy,anddataanalysisinthecoreresearchareasnotedaboveandelecttodoeitherathesisoranapplied project. Our master’s graduates are prepared for workingovernmentagencies,nonprofitorganizationsandadvocacyorganizations,teachingincommunitycolleges,and further study and research in the justice field.

The doctor of philosophy in justice studies integrates philosophical,legalandethicalapproacheswithsocialscience and humanities perspectives in the five core research areas. With few required courses among the requiredunitsforthedegree,you’llhavetremendousflexibilitytobuildaprogramthatsuitsyourresearchinterestsandprofessionalgoals.Mostofourdoctoralalumniareteaching at the college or university level.

Concurrent degree programs in justice studies are in placewithASU’sSandraDayO’ConnorCollegeofLaw (PhD/JD)andinanthropology(MS/MA).Yougainadmissionto each program separately.

The School’s doctoral and master’s programs in justice studies prepare future scholars and change agentstoaddresscomplexsocialproblemsusingsocialscienceskillsinformedbyinsightsfromthehumanities.Studentsgainthetrainingneededtoanalyzesocial,legaland economic inequalities and promote pathways to more just societies.

You’llfindanumberofopportunities for financial and professional support.Anumberofdoctoralstudentsarefunded with graduate fellowships and teaching and research assistantships.Theseawardscovertuition,healthinsurance,and also carry a stipend.

Asdoctoralstudentsnearthefinalstagesoftheirprogram,theyapplyforcompetitiveDissertationCompletion FellowshipsfromASUGraduateEducation,semester-longfunding that allows students to focus on the dissertation.

YourmentoringintheSchoolwillincludeinvolvementinprofessional development seminars and courses in Writing forPublicationandDissertationWritingSupport,organizedbytheassociatedirectorforfacultyandgraduatestudentmentoring.Ifyourultimategoalisaprofessorialcareer,youwillbeencouragedtoparticipateaswellinASU’soutstanding Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program graduate.asu.edu/pff after your first year of doctoral study.
