Being present in our magnificent Jewish homeland – the Land of Israel, the State of Israel, the eternal Land of the Jewish people, religion, nation – is an indescribably blessed experience, one which I hope you have already, or will sometime soon, share. How extraordinary it was to spend time in that beautiful land. Whether in Tel Aviv, the Negev, the Galilee, or united Jerusalem (the nation’s eternal capital), our time there was filled with food, music, the beach, hiking, biking, travel, fun, adventure, emotion, sadness and joy, prayer, holiness, spirituality, time with family and friends. Experiencing ‘deeper insight’ is one of the benefits derived from being in Israel – insights about Judaism, Jewish history, Jewish geography, Jewish language, Jewish life, Jewish tradition, Jewish people, Jewish existence, Jewish survival, and Jewish meaning, all of which is foundational in our ancient homeland. Being back here now in this blessed land of the USA, and with the High Holidays upon us, I draw upon the Israel experiences and insights as reminders that all of our Jewish celebrations and observances must ultimately be contextual – that is, they must always be experienced as part of the larger picture of Jewish life. Key to our embrace of – and connection with – our Jewish heritage is familiarity with it, allegiance to it, pride in it, and practice of it. Let us then learn about and live full Jewish lives. In this way our Jewish Covenant’s eternal renewal is possible. May these High Holidays be a truly meaningful occasion for each of us, spurring us on anew, yet again, to stand proud and tall always with our precious Judaism. Judy, Ayelet, Eitan, Noam, and I extend our wishes to each of you for a Shanah tovah, m’tukah, u-m’vorechet—a good, sweet, and blessed year! FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY

I am awash in feelings of being spiritually re-anchored, reconnected, restored, and revitalized as my family and I just returned from spending 2-plus weeks in Israel.

We stand at the threshold of a new year with new hopes. We will take to heart the meanings of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, engaging ourselves in prayer and doing our utmost to improve our relationships with others and with God.

This is a time for improvement and soul searching and looking within ourselves.

This year I will again match the Kol Nidre Appeal funds, in memory of my beloved twin brother, Jay. Our synagogue means a great deal to me, for it is my worship home, my oasis, my place for spiritual enrichment and religious fulfillment, as well as learning and community, for the past fifteen years. This is especially the case since 2011 with the sudden passing of Jay and the rebuilding of my life.

So, dear friends, please give and know that it is in your hands to keep ACI alive.

I wish all of you a healthy and wonderful New Year. May God inscribe each in His Book of Life for another year.

Warmly,Cynthia Groopman

Thanks and Recap:As we welcome another year of ACI events, we recall the weeks of June (and late May)

—so chockful of happy times: We celebrated the End-of-School-Year Celebration & New Members Shabbat, honoring the teachers, students, and families of ACI’s youth and education programs, and welcoming ACI’s newest members. We thank Kiddush luncheon sponsors Litza Stark & Ari Gerson (Education Committee Chair), and Cynthia Groop-man (in celebration her 3rd anniversary at Brandywine).

At another lovely service and festive meal, we celebrated the bat mitzvah of Noa Gilad—a beautiful day featuring three generations of the Lindenblatt/Gilad families. Mazel tov to Noa and family!

We were so pleased to honor ACI’s second Ba’alat Mitzvah class—Susan Cohn, Cynthia Groopman, Bronnie Raver, & Alona Shevach—at the annual Journal Service. Bouquets to Sydelle Diner, Journal chair, assisted by Susan Cohn & the entire committee, for their dedicated hard work in creating such a successful and attractive Journal. Much appreciation also to designer Bill Weber, whose artistry was again so evident in the finished product. Our gratitude to Sydelle for also sponsoring the delicious Oneg.

Our June Lunch-‘N-Learn was sponsored by Judy and Steve Markowitz, in honor of the college graduation of daughter Leah from Binghamton University. Mazel tov to the Markowitz family, and all best to Leah as she goes on to graduate school at Baruch College.

Holidays at ACI were also outstanding, as we celebrated Shavu’ot with our annual Dine-‘N-Drash evening of Torah study, with a dairy feast.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year!Judy Markowitz & Judy Pearl,

Sydelle Diner & Family, in memory of their beloved Dr. Harold Diner, Dr. David & Birdie Eisenberg, Dr. Sanford Eisenberg, Everett Eisenberg, Harry & Jennie Diner, Murray & Jack Diner, Eva Stern (right side bouquet).

Yom Kippur Mrs. Martha Michaels & Family, in memory of beloved parents Lena & Harry Sklarofsky, husband Morris Michaels, his parents Jacob & Ida Michaels, her sister & brother-in-law Dina & Harry Pack, her brother & sister-in-law Max & Frances Sklarofsky, niece Ellen Sklarofsky Sherman.

Occurring before the sun has finally set but toward the end of the holiest of Jewish holidays—the day of fasting and prayer and so often intense emotion—Ne’ilah, the concluding section of the Yom Kip-pur service, is also its emotional climax; it contains perhaps the most moving passages in the entire Jewish liturgy. The emotional intensity of the Ne’ilah service is explained by musicologist Judith Kaplan Eisenstein in her text Heritage of Music: The Music of the Jewish People. “To the pious Jew,” she writes, “this is the last opportunity to appeal to the ‘ear’ of the Almighty with a final plea for forgiveness, for mercy and for a new year of life and blessing.” In Europe it was traditional for the Ne’ilah service to be conducted by the rabbi; to him belonged the task of conveying to his congregation the awesomeness of these, the final moments of the most solemn and sacred of days. I can recall most vividly the fervor of devotion which my own revered rabbi, the well-known Talmudic scholar Dr. Samuel Ochs, brought to his rendition of Ne’ilah. The memory of his piety and reverence has been an inspiration to me throughout the years, and I have always sought to conduct Ne’ilah with his example in mind. I hope that God will give me the strength to do so for many years to come. May all of you be inscribed for a happy and healthy life in the New Year.
