Asteroid Redirect Crewed Mission Overview
2
Deliver crew on SLS/Orion
Attached Orion to robotic spacecraft
Perform extra-vehicular activity (EVA) to retrieve asteroid samples
Return crew safely with asteroid samples in Orion
NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis • #AsteroidCrew
Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Details
• Orion-based EVA with two Crewmembers
• Two EVAs + One Contingency
• Short Duration (~4 hours) in Simple Lightweight Suit

Suit and EVA Mission Kits
Four kits were identified to enable Orion Capsule-Based EVA capability
EVA Servicing and Recharge
EVA Tools, Translation Aids & Sample Container
EVA Communications Cabin Repress Kit
Equipment necessary for multiple EVAs including recharge for PLSS water and oxygen, crew equipment, etc.
Standard and specialized tools to complete mission objectives
Repackaged Primary Life Support System radio that allows communication between EVA crew and ground
Provides enriched air for multiple repressurizations of the cabin without using Orion resources
Leverage current ISS and Apollo experience.
Based on ISS Nitrogen/Oxygen Recharge Concept
Based on ISS and Shuttle equipment
Utilizes common radio currently being developed by Advanced Exploration Systems 4
Asteroid Redirect Mission builds upon Orion/SLS to enable Global Exploration Roadmap

RFI Selection Process
• Our panel of experts carefully reviewed 22 RFI’s in the area of Crew Systems and Extensibility.
• Proposals were selected based on:– Merit for the mission;– Extensibility towards next missions (Lunar, Deep Space, and
towards Mars)– Design maturity;– Applicability towards mission guidelines
• Consolidated into 13 presentation/discussions representing a industry, NASA, international, and academia.
