“We rise by raising others, and he who bends over to aid the fallen, stands erect.” Rabbi Jacob Weinstein (1902-1974, USA)
2020 what a year! The world happened to us and like most, we were caught unawares and unsure of how to proceed. We forged ahead though, charting new territory for an organization so steeped in its history and practices. Through all the first steps and uncertainties, we did in fact have much to celebrate.
Some of the wonderful highlights of 2020:A partnership was formed with Federation CJA and The Jewish Community Foundation to offer loans to small businesses that were impacted by the pandemic, and who did not qualify for any of the government aid programs. The Small Business Emergency Loan Program granted 43 loans totaling $332,500.00.We entered into an agreement with Federation’s Gesher Committee to help them get loans to some of their constituents. By working together, we can hopefully help more members of our community. The workings and the history of HFLA were part of a Zoom presentation and discussion with the members of Congregation Dorshei Emet. With an eye to the future, while respecting and honouring our history, we updated and modernized our Mission Statement, our Vision Statement and our stated Values, an exercise that had not been done in recent memory, or perhaps not even since 1911! A series of board development evenings were held to help develop our overall strategic plan. The entire board of directors worked cohesively and cooperatively over many weeks, guided by an experienced professional in the field. We were the recipients of many generous gifts over the year, some in the form of testamentary bequeaths, and all in appreciation of how they or their ancestors were directly helped by HFLA. It is a wonderful legacy that the help that HFLA provides impacts generation after generation. We also mourn the loss of some important contributors and supporters. They will be greatly missed. - Charles Benisty CGA - Board of Directors from 1995 to 2010 and President of HFLA from 2005-2006 - Aaron Fish - Board of Directors from 2005-2010, stalwart of our loan committee and a generous supporter and booster of the Association. - Dr. Frank Guttman - great supporter and friend of the organization and author of “Sustaining Hope and Maintaining Dignity, Hebrew Free Loan Association 1911-2011”, an in-depth and thorough look at our organization. The book, the result of his thesis, is a must read for anyone who wants to gain an understanding of our history and the path we have walked on these past 100 years. As I finish my term in office as President, I would like to thank all those who have contributed to make this position as enjoyable as it has been (in spite of the challenges!). Nicky who provided continual help and guidance and sometimes some very gentle prodding as well. Myriam and Laura, the dual force that keeps the office working so smoothly, even from their homes. The Board of Directors and Officers who offer such incredible knowledge and enthusiasm, their commitment to HFLA is outstanding. To those who sat around our table every second week, I cannot express enough how valued your opinions are. It is because of you that we are able to provide the loans to help others rise up. Kol Hakavod The support and guidance I have received from all the Past Presidents, those who have previously sat in this chair, is immeasurable. Thank you for helping me at every turn. This year as HFLA enters its 110th year of service in Montreal, we have updated, revised and are ready to move forward into the future, happy to continue in our service to the community. We are here, our doors are open and like always, we are ready to help.
Please join us on this journey.L’Shalom
Shalom,

RECOGNITION is extended to those individuals who have generously contributed to the MITZVAH FUND.
This fund provides the means to enable the Association to grant loans of up to $600 without guarantee for worthwhile purposes to borrowers who, for one reason or another, are unable to provide guarantors for their loan. The effect of the fund is thus to expand the reach of the Association’s activities, enabling the Association to provide assistance in cases which, and to borrowers who, otherwise would have been considered ineligible.

Excerpt From 1961 (50th Anniversary) Annual Report
“Let The Record Speak”
The Hebrew Free Loan Association prides itself that since 1911 it has helped withsympathy and dignity all classes in the community.
Borrowers have included workingmen, small manufacturers, storekeepers, widows, artisans, tailors, and merchants.
Others included doctors, lawyers, dentists, druggists, college students, teachers, shochtim, and salesmen.
Loans have been received for the necessities of life, illness, medical, dental andhospital services, education and rehabilitation for small businessmen in temporarydifficulties. Loans have helped relatives in foreign counties, purchased agricultural
equipment and livestock, paid property taxes and interest to prevent foreclosure and theloss of life’s savings.
The Association has helped bridge unemployment, has alleviated temporaryembarrassment and has helped reconstruct family life to stability with confidence and
respect.
To the needy newcomers from all corners of the earth, we have given and continue togive every co-operation, directly, and together with other communal organizations.

Helping others help the community grow
For one hundred and nine years, the Hebrew Free Loan Association has been one of the foremost contributors to the growth and continuing good health of the Montreal Jewish community. Instead of maintaining less fortunate community members at a level of sub-sistence through charity, Hebrew Free Loan is devoted to helping them attain through their own efforts the levels they are capable of reaching. By making interest-free loans rather than giving handouts, the Association gives deserving recipients the chance to solve their own problems rather than turning them over to the public; and to launch projects that improve the quality of their lives rather than merely holding on to what they have.
Hebrew Free Loan also provides a less tangible revitalization. It has saved thousands of families from punishing and humiliating poverty. It has allowed thousands of individ-uals to turn their ambitions into reality. Through the Hebrew Free Loan Association, the community lifts up the destitute and the unlucky and fulfills the ancient commandment to do good for one’s neighbour. The pride community members can take in their solidarity and humanness is the self-renewal which best prepares us for times of change.
The tradition of dignity
At the loan committee meetings of the Hebrew Free Loan Association, each prospective loan is carefully examined to ensure that the money is needed, that the project to be undertaken is worthwhile, and that the borrower will be able to repay it. Questions ensue about a loan guarantor’s financial capacity to back a loan. The directors are committed to giving the borrower the benefit of the doubt in all cases. In its daily operation the Association never loses sight of the foundations of its work. Perhaps the most important operating principle is dignity.
Dignity, in being able to provide for oneself and one’s family and be an equal member of the community, is what financial need takes from a person. Hebrew Free Loan tries to restore dignity to that person by enabling him or her to gain a status worthy of esteem and self-re-spect. Each step of the lending process is marked by concern for the dignity of the individual.

WITNESS, TUESDAY, May 30, 1911FOR NEEDY JEWS
Hebrew Loan Society Inaugurated Yesterday
Formally launched at a meeting of prominent citizens held in the Baron de Hirsch Institute yes-terday, the first Hebrew Free Loan Society is expected to be very useful to needy but deserving Jews, by enabling them to tide over bad times or make a fresh start. The objects of the Society
have already been given, and it has now been announced that a sum of $7000 is on hand as a start for the loan fund. This sum was subscribed by the less wealthy members of local Jewish Community and is expected to be considerably augmented when the rich Hebrew citizens are interested in the project.
A good deal of the credit for founding the society is due to Mr Zigmond Fineberg, on whom the burden of the organization work has fallen. Mr. Fineberg has been elected president, with Messrs. A. Jacobs and H. Fineberg as vice-presidents, Mr. T. Glickman as treasurer and Mr. M. Albert, secretary. A board of directors has also been appointed and a charter will be applied for at once.
Yesterday’s meeting decided that the doors of the society be open to all who were anxious to help themselves, and can give security for the money borrowed either on their property or by the ordinary endorsed paper. The loans will be granted absolutely free of any charges whatsoever – no interest, no-tarial or banking charges will be made, and repayment will be made as far as possible to suit the con-venience of the borrower. As fast as the repayment instalments come in they will be lent out again to others so that a dollar may do its good work several times and for several different persons each year.
The promoters say that wherever similar societies have been started they have been very successful, and though they lent money only to people who really need it to keep them afloat, the losses had not in any case averaged more than one-half of one per cent, and even this small loss was almost entirely caused by illness or death. The cost of maintenance will come out of the annual dues of the subscribers.
How the society can be of great practical benefit to those who may be temporarily distressed and to whom a loan would save the situation, as shown by the case of a Jewish farmer from Ste. Sophie who came before the meeting and explained that judgment had been secured against him for $147 instal-ments due on a farm he had purchased and on which he had already paid $300 besides a considerable sum spent on improvements. In default of payment he would be put out and he had no way of raising the money unless through the society such as that now being formed. He will probably be first to be accommodated by the Free Loan Society when it is definitely in working order.
