Friday, 25 August 2017 Dear Families, Students, Carers and Staff I recently received the following le<er from Catholic Educa>on SA Assistant Director Monica Conway: Dear Kerry Your selection by ACARA earlier this year as a school demonstrating above average gains in Year 3-5 Numeracy NAPLAN scores between 2014 and 2016 is of continuing interest to members of the Religious Identity & Leading Learning (RILL) section of the Catholic Education Office. I am writing to request your participation in a small research project to gather insights and information to contribute to CESA’s Improved student learning and wellbeing Strategy across our system of schools. Our proposal is to visit your school to interview you and other key leaders of learning in order to ascertain, among other things, the factors that you would say have contributed to the above average gains; the extent to which these gains are indicative of more general trends; whether you have seen improvements in other areas of the school; structures, processes or roles within your school that have contributed to the demonstrated learning improvement; particular professional learning around school change, school-based action research, data use, agreed practices across the school, pedagogical leadership, assessment moderation; changes in models of professional learning; resources or approaches that have made changed practices possible; any impact of services provided through the CEO RILL teams; beneficial legacy of previous programs that your school has been involved in; targeted approaches for individuals or groups of students. Once again, congratulations for your school’s recognition in this matter and I look forward to learning more of what has contributed to these outcomes Yours sincerely Monica Conway Assistant Director 18 May 2017 Yesterday, Mr Ray Moritz from the Catholic Educa>on Office interviewed myself and other members of staff concerning the manner in which these results were achieved. The conversa>on went along the following lines: While Holy Family does not specifically target improved results in NAPLAN tes>ng, we are pleased to see the con>nuing improvement of our results in a variety of assessments including NAPLAN: Staff at our school a<ribute our success to the influence of certain aspects of the way we teach here at Holy Family: Our focus on Posi>ve Educa>on and the “uncondi>onal posi>ve regard” our staff have towards each of our students. (Our children have been iden>fied as being 13% above the State Average for cogni>ve engagement); Our belief that children are “intelligent ci>zens from birth” and that they are created in the image of God; We believe that children have “100 languages” not only tradi>onal literacies and numeracies; Many of our students are fortunate to have a community language other than English;

FROM THE APRIMLast Sunday was the feast of Saint Bernard. He was born on August 20th, 1090 in France. Bernard was born into a wealthy family. At age 22 he decided to join the Benedictine monks who lived a strict life of prayer, silence and penance.

I believe Saint Bernard had many special qualities that we could aspire to support in our own lives today.

Simplicity-Bernard lived a life of simple meals, prayer and little sleep.

Compassion- When he became sick he became more understanding of human needs and began to help others.

Peacemaker- Because of his ability to settle disputes he was called on to travel to various countries to give his advice on Church and government affairs.

Passionate- He was fearless in giving his opinion and highly respected for his insight into problems. He was an inspiring speaker and writer on the love of God, Mary, Scripture and leading a spiritual life.

He died in 1153. He was a Doctor of the Church and patron saint of beekeepers, candle makers and Gibraltar.

He was canonized a saint in 1174.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Laptops The laptops are a great tool for the students. Here are a few tips for looking after them:

• No food or drink near the laptop;• Store in a safe and dry area;• Use in a dry area (ie not near sinks or wash areas);• Do not run or walk with the laptop in the open position;• Do not run with the laptop;• Always ensure the protective cover is on and not

tampered with.

Thank you and enjoy.

Some Gentle Reminders:• School starts at 8.50am, children must be under supervision of adults at all times. Yard Duty

begins at 8.30am, if they arrive earlier they need to attend OSHC;• School finishes at 3pm if you cannot collect your child by 3.10pm, they need to go to OSHC;

• Please use the Kiss and Drop Zone and DO NOT drop off your children in the car parks or park in Disabled Zones … it is illegal;

• Please don’t walk on the driveways, use the footpaths, don’t walk in or out of the vehicle entry/exit gates.
