The focus is not self-help tactics, but rather “others help” tactics, which will enable you to help your coworkers and associates reduce their stress. Learning Outcomes Through this course, students will have the opportunity to: Develop an understanding of the causes and consequences of stress in the workplace. Apply measurement principles and research to develop an action plan for reducing stress in the workplace. Develop communication and problem-solving skills relevant to stress management. Course Materials The main reading for this course is the following textbook: Halbesleben (2010). Managing stress and preventing burnout in the healthcare workplace. Chicago: Health Administration Press. This book was selected because it is concise, based on research, and because it is accessible for the typical front- line manager. While the textbook focuses on the healthcare industry, the ideas and examples transfer nicely to most workplace contexts. Additional articles will also be assigned throughout the course, and I expect you to bring additional resources (e.g., articles) to the class through the discussions and in your assignments. Assignments and GradingThis section of the Syllabus outlines the course assignments, how they will be graded, and how they will be used todetermine your grade. I will grade assignments within one week of their due date.

Discussion Assignments (30 points)There are four discussion assignments in the course.

The first two assignments for unit one (Introductions and Unit 1 Discussion) will be graded together –together worth 10 points. Unit 2 and Unit 3 discussions will be worth 10 points each.

For each of the three units we will have online discussions related to the readings and how they overlap withyour own experiences. In each unit there is a description of the discussion assignment, including questions toget the discussion started.Your discussion posts will be graded based on the quality of your post (e.g., ties to readings and other coursematerial), the level of interaction with your colleagues, and the timeliness of the post. See the DiscussionRubric for evaluation details.

Capturing Stress Among Colleagues Assignment (30 points)In order to manage stress, we will need to determine how much stress your colleagues are experiencing andthe nature of that stress. This assignment combines observation, interview, and survey techniques to developyour skills in assessing stress among colleagues.See the Unit 1 Assignment description for details and grading information.

Gathering Solutions Assignment (20 points)Part of the stress management principles we will focus on is the idea of working with colleagues to developsolutions to the problems of stress at work. This assignment will ask you to interview colleagues and provide abrief summary report of potential solutions for addressing stressors in your workplace.See the Unit 2 Assignment description for details and grading information. The information from thisassignment is critical to your last assignment.

BRIDGES Action Plan (50 points)This integrative assignment will put everything we have discussed together to create an action plan forreducing stress in your workplace. You will take the information you have gathered in the previous twoassignments and use it to formulate an action plan for your organization/department/etc.See the Unit 3 Assignment description for details and grading information.

The due dates for all assignments are included in the Course Summary (below) and Canvas Calendar. Additionally,details about each assignment are provided on the Home page of the course where each unit is listed.

Your grade for this course will be calculated as a percentage of total points. Rounding will not be used in calculatingcourse grades. The grade scale is:

Late Work Policy

Since this is a short course with a structured timeline, you will experience the most success by following thedeadlines established. Work submitted after the deadline will only be considered after communication with me, theinstructor, and will have points deducted at my discretion. The acceptance of late work because of extenuatingcircumstances does not set precedence for future policy.
