MONEY DOES NOT GROW ON TREES: FOOD DOES Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 27, 2015 - Come join the Ogier Gardens family, and learn how to live a healthy lifestyle on that tight college student budget. The student volunteers at The Frederick and Ophelia Tate Ogier Gardens know how hard it is to live paycheck to paycheck, or on a very small allowance. Money is of the essence at all times for college students, and it is important that you don’t just go out and buy junk food with the money you do have because you feel it is the only option. While money doesn’t grow on trees, food sure does! Come join the Ogier Gardens: get some exercise, learn a little, and have a great time surrounded by people who care about healthy living. The Ogier Gardens is located toward the back of the University of North Florida campus, near the stadium. It is right next to lot 18 and the skate park. Follow the dirt pavement leading to the beautiful patches of greenery on the left hand side. The Ogier Gardens is always looking for volunteers, as it is difficult to keep a garden growing plentifully with only a few volunteers. By working at the Ogier Gardens you are not only learning how to grow your very own garden, but also learning the importance of eating healthily, even on a budget. By growing your own fruits and veggies, spending money on produce is no longer an issue! Established in 2009, the Frederick and Ophelia Tate Ogier Gardens was originally just a small student led initiative after a generous donation from alumni Bruce Ogier. The gardens began as just six small beds, and has now grown into fifteen full gardens. “The Frederick and Ophelia Tate Ogier Gardens will serve as a living laboratory for students to explore multiple disciplines. Programs strive to promote student health and wellness through outdoor recreation & experiential learning. UNF will serve as a model for other non-land grant universities incorporating experiential learning on farms or with gardens.” The produce grown in the Ogier Gardens is used in the cafeteria at the University of North Florida, in order to ensure healthy eating habits on campus. Ogier Gardens director, Kevin Anderson, shared his experience working with the Ogier Gardens: Its been a pleasure working with students and seeing them get involved to help make a difference in the issue of hunger, Id like to see even more students come out and help. We all have a great time and its a good thing to put on a resume.
