Presentation of Research results

Page 2: Assignment 4

Introduction

This presentation will present the results from my research and clarify how this information will help me develop my concept art sketches and final product.

Page 3: Assignment 4

Types of research

I undertook three types of research in this process one of which is creating a secondary research method which was a mind map and mood board that I will present in the next slide. I also created a games research presentation and a primary research method survey which all helped me design my game and develop my work.

In the last two slides I show my mind map and mood board, the images I gathered helped me create a game where a character named khansu a sorcerer who’s on a quest to find a treasure but has to go through certain trials and tribulations to achieve his goal, to find this treasure he realises that in every map he comes across there are dragons and he has to slay them, however as each level increases the dragons get more difficult to slay and it becomes more challenging. The pictures contributed towards the development of my sketches for the game.

Game Research: Evaluation #1

The game has cartoon styled characters and uses bold colours, it uses a few shades of each colour for the object. Its a very great artistic design and brings a great smoothness to the cell shading. The game appears to be hand drawn and bright colours are used.

If the game had been done using a photorealistic art style the tone and feel of the game would be more serious, it would be trying to make the game look as real as possible which is tricky because we don’t have a bases for comparison.

Using cell shading makes it better because its results can completely change the ‘feel’ of a game.

Game Research: Collage #1b items in game

Researching cel-shading in this game helped me with my designs for my own game, because I looked at the weapons used in this game and took interest in the sword and designed one just like it.

Weapon ideas

Items such as a shield.

Game Research: Review #1This information will help me with my own work by giving me a better understanding of the application of cel shading games in adventure games with a particular point of focus on the items in the games.

Game Research: Evaluation #2Naruto is a cel-shaded game it uses simple colours and its almost identical to the anime.

The games uses plenty of visual effects, like fire, smoke, light, etc. It really looks like its being drawn in real time. The cartoon is based on same visual style as anime, it has been used because its some what a recent addition to computer graphics.

This feel is to make it look like your playing in a cartoon.

Researching this game helped me with my own designs because, looking at the background In the environment, the colours are bright and interesting.

Graphical Style Cel-shaded

Page 16: Assignment 4

Game Research: Evaluation #3 characters

It recreates a style of a traditional 2D series. It uses the 3D graphics and preserves all the characteristics that show all the original hand drawn animations.

The style has been used because The consequence of cel shading is that it gives everything an airy, physically light feeling because there is generally a more smooth texture and lighting in the game.

Game Research: Collage #3 charactersFacial expression on characters face

Characters costumes

The specific style of the way the characters are animated in this game interested me particularly because I like the definition of the muscles and the unusual hair and colour which is different for a cel-shaded game.

Page 18: Assignment 4

Game Research: Review #3This information will help me with my sketches by understanding the style of cel-shaded games and the graphics used. As well as it being a very difficult technique.

Page 19: Assignment 4

The graphical style cel-shading which is known as toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic design which makes computer graphics to give the impression to be hand-drawn. It uses simple colours and is often used to imitate the style of a comic book or cartoon. Games such as Naruto and Dragon Ball Z and many others use cell shaded graphics to give games characters and environment a certain feel. This feel is to make it look like your playing in a cartoon.

This relates to the genre because cel-shading is most commonly used in comedic games or games for young children, it has an effect on a players experience which is,it gives models a simple and clean cartoon look many games use this style because it is new and fresh. The games tend to have a much more original feel to them.

These are my results for the questionnaire I conducted, this helped me develop ideas for my concept art.

Page 21: Assignment 4

1)What graphical style would be great for an adventure game?

cel-shadedphotorealismexxageration abstract

This question helped me show the type of graphical style that people thought would be good for an adventure game. The majority of people said cel-shaded which was 80% of the class. I took this information on board and decided to use cel-shading.

2)For a game set in the renaissance area in a jungle which weapon would be the appropriate?

This question helped me with my weapon Ideas and which one I should design, the popular weapon was the sword which was 50% of the class. I took this information on board and created a sword for my design as you can see in my games research slides.

ConclusionAll the data I had gathered helped me to develop my game idea, In my game research I looked at games that were cel-shaded and looked at the weapon design in the game, by looking at other peoples opinions on my design this helped me with my final idea, I also asked a question about my weapon design in my questionnaire and majority of my class chose a sword so this is my sketch as a result to all my research
