Honda Internship Analysis
The first job I chose to analyze was an internship I found for Honda. They are looking for mechanical engineering students to work an internship in the summer of 2016. Some of the skills that they specifically list they are looking
for are: communication, interpersonal, proficient PC skills including but not limited to excel. Also use of MatLab/LabView is a plus. One of the
responsibilities that is listed on the job ad is that you will be “assisting design engineers in developing/designing of future models and supporting the creation of drawings”. This leads me to believe that, on the corporate scale, the company
has a creative culture. They seem to really need somebody that is able to use Excel proficiently because they mention it twice in the same ad. In fact, I would
be inclined to believe that if you don’t have Excel on you resume or any kind of experience using it, you wouldn’t be considered as a qualified candidate. Some of the buzzwords that they use are CAD, Excel, MatLab, LabView,
communication, interpersonal, and design. The way my resume and cover letter responded specifically to the job call was that I made sure to mention most of the buzzwords mentioned above and described how I used the software
packages that they mention. The difference in between this job and the other job at OG&E is that they are both completely different job fields. OG&E is an
energy company and Honda is a motor company. OG&E is looking for what’s referred to as a field engineer, which is an engineer that doesn’t just sit at a desk and make drawings. They are also out in the field working and helping the
technicians with actual repairs/building. The way that they are both similar is that they both are looking for mechanical engineer interns for the 2016
summer. I made sure to follow Anderson’s advice from the reading on “Obtaining a Job” by choosing two companies (Honda & OG&E) that I know about and authentically want to work for.
To whom it may concern,
My name is Matthew Garde. I am applying for a mechanical engineering internship opportunity I
seen on your website. As a junior at the University of Oklahoma majoring in mechanical
engineering, I am looking to get an exciting and innovating career started and I believe Honda is
just the place to do that. My favorite trait about Honda is that you cover everything from cars to
power sports to lawn equipment and even marine applications. Making a great quality product
that can last people for many years is also one of my personal ambitions. Since Honda does that,
that makes me even more interested in this company.
Some of the attributes that make me a qualified candidate for your internship program are my
excellent oral/written communication skills, my proficient PC skills in Microsoft Excel and
Powerpoint, and I am also very familiar with motors. I took an automotive technician training
class for a semester and learned through hands-on experience how to repair and diagnose
problems that consumers experienced with their cars. I am a certified trainer at my current job,
Red Lobster, which results in me leading and teaching others from time to time I have also
completed a number of projects throughout my undergrad that would benefit me at Honda.
I took a design and manufacturing processes class and was assigned a group project that was due
at the end of the semester. The project required our team to come up with a product that had
never been invented, it had to be useful, and we also had to completely design it. We chose to do
an electrical box that could move in and out of a wall. To do the design we used AutoCAD and
Autodesk Inventor. We then had to determine what manufacturing process would be the most
efficient and allow the product to be justified by a consumer when buying.
I believe I have met all the requirements to be eligible for the internship and have many other
skills to offer the company. I would like to meet with you so that I can elaborate more on my
other qualifications. If there is any question that you might have for me I am available on
Wednesday’s all day and on Thursday afternoons between 1:30 and 4:00. You can reach me
anytime by my email [email protected] or by phone at (405) 343-6522. Thank you for
your time and have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
Matthew Garde

Dear Mr. Honda,
It’s Matt Garde here. I interviewed with you about an internship for the summer of 2016 last Thursday. I just wanted to say thank you for getting the chance to interview with you last week about the summer internship position
you had open. I really feel like Honda is the right place for me to work especially after our conversation about what direction the company was trying
to go and the plan to get there. I was also interested to hear about the new project your working on as well. Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you again for considering me to work for this great company. I look forward to our next
meeting.
Sincerely,
Matthew Garde

The second job analysis that I am performing is over an internship at OG&E. They are looking specifically for OU students that are majoring in electrical, mechanical, chemical, or civil engineering. They also state that no other
applicants will be considered for the position so it’s an automatic denial if you’re not attending OU for one of said engineering majors. Some of the skills
that they are looking for are well developed oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, team player, strong problem solving, organizational, analytical, and the ability to utilize engineering computer tools. They don’t
really use any technical jargon terms in the job add. They keep it all pretty much in laymans terms. They avoid this by using very vague terms like saying
“performs analysis” or “developing specialized engineering skills”. They could be more specific and include jargon terms by saying something like “performs stress and strain analysis on axially loaded members”. I believe that they avoid
using jargon in this job ad so that they can get more people to apply for the job. It’s a very easily readable job ad. Some of the buzzwords they use are team
player, organizational, interpersonal, and analytical. I customized my resume for this job ad by changing what courses I listed first that I believed would be the most relevent. I also changed the font of my resume and other formatting
options to change it up from my other resume. Namely, I chose a font called Georgia so that my resume would stand out from the other resumes that use
Times New Roman. It’s a professional serif font that looks similar to Times New Roman but is still noticeably different. I took potters advice again in creating
my resume and used strong verbs and made sure to use correct parallel construction. I also used his advice in designing both cover letters to include 4 paragraphs and they both cover the PEA that we talked about in class.
To whom it may concern,
My name is Matthew Garde. I am a junior at the University of Oklahoma majoring in mechanical engineering and am looking for a summer internship for 2016. I came across OG&E’s job ad on indeed.com and was interested. I
believe I would be a good fit for this company because of my experience in dealing with people and working on teams, which is listed in the job description
often. These are tasks and responsibilities that I enjoy doing so it really makes me interested in this company. I have taken classes and completed projects in school that can directly relate to the job at hand.
I was the leader of a group of 4 people for a professional development research project. The tasks of our group was to research engineering disasters and also
engineering achievements and determine what the worst engineering disaster was and also the greatest engineering achievement of the 21st century. We had
to write a journal article (it wasn’t published and was for educational purposes only) over our decision and also had to give a class presentation supporting our choices.
I learned from this experience how to effectively manage a team of colleagues,
perform proper research and citing techniques, and how to professionally write a scholarly article. I believe, based on the job description, that I could apply these and further develop these skills by working for OG&E. I am also currently
a certified trainer of servers at Red Lobster and performing this job has developed my organizational and oral/written communication skills.
I believe I have met all the requirements to be eligible for the internship and have many other skills to offer the company. I would like to meet with you so
that I can elaborate more on my other qualifications. If there is any question that you might have for me I am available on Wednesday’s all day and on Thursday afternoons between 1:30 and 4:00. You can reach me anytime by my
email [email protected] or by phone at (405) 343-6522. I look forward to meeting with you and thank you for your time. Have a wonderful day.

Resume Analysis
I was able to talk to a current professor at OU and he was willing to help me out and gave me curriculum vitae. The professor is Dr. Christopher R. Dalton in the school of aerospace and mechanical engineering. According to him, in
academia settings most people don’t have a one page resume and instead use a CV in its place. In analyzing his CV, I can say that he has more than enough
information to be able to create a 1 page resume. On his CV, he has numerous kinds of information but they all have one central topic: education. He talks about the positions he has held which range from library assistant to graduate
teaching assistant to professor. He talks about the university activities and committee work he performed. He also lists what conference presentations he
has led and been apart of. He gives good descriptions of all of these and keeps it short. He actually gives such good descriptions and has so many of them that he builds a really good picture of himself as being a teaching authority,
which is a pro straight from the lectures. One of the cons about this CV is that its not very scanable. If you didn’t have time to sit down and read through it then it would be very difficult to pick out some key points. There is not much
jargon in this document either and the only places that uses it is in the titles of projects.
