This report is a summary of the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) 2 day Workshop led by Cormac Russell, Co-director ABCD Europe, Nurture Development. Organised by Maria Gallagher & Wayne Jepson (1000 Lives Improvement) with Fran O’Hara (Scarlet Design & ‘Working With Not To’ Co-production project).
Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is an approach that promotes citizen-led action in the first instance, and then leverages outside support to match community assets when needed: co-production. It has a history of success in building on existing community strengths to support stronger, more sustainable communities for the future.
The ABCD process helps to identify, connect and mobilise local assets, and supports the development of a community wide vision. The training was led by Cormac Russell, and provided practical tools and presented successful community building experiences from around the world and provide tips on increasing engagement in the process.
Whole community transformation shifts the focus from separate target groups, eg. frail elderly or youth at risk, to one that connects people positively regardless of age or label.
Asset Based Community Development considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. It offers a robust evidence-based framework for social change, challenging us to consider the following questions:
Q. What is it that communities can do best?
Q. What do communities require help with?
Q. What do communities need outside agencies to do for them?
The challenges on public services and communities in Wales are clear and there is a forecast of increasing pressure in the future. How can we work together to improve community life and service provision despite these challenges?
In Wales this approach aligns with prudent healthcare, the ‘Well-being of Future Generations’ and the ‘Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act’. This training was commissioned to support the implementation of these, to help turn the rhetoric into reality.
What next? Another 2 day training course is being led by Cormac on July 13 and 14, 2016 in North Wales. Please share this free training with anyone you feel may be interested - to book please contact Julianne: [email protected]
