WELL:
The WELL Building Standard is revolutionizing the way people
think about buildings. It explores how design, operations and
behaviors within the places where we live, work, learn and play can
be optimized to advance human health and well-being. Covering seven
core concepts of health and hundreds of features, WELL is a
flexible building standard and represents the future of modern
design.

In 2018, WELL introduced a pilot standard, WELL v2, which has
streamlined and revised WELL v1 to be easier for certification
teams to understand and utilize. Constantly evolving and expanding,
the WELL Building Standard made several key updates from WELL v1 to
the WELL v2 pilot. The WELL v2 pilot highlights new concepts and
features, such as Sound and Materials, a point system, and no
building type rules or restrictions. In addition, projects can now
pursue individual parts within optimization features without
obtaining full credit within that feature.
While there are several new traits to WELL v2, the underlying
intent remains the same – improve human health and wellbeing
through the built environment. Therefore, ASSA ABLOY’s door and
hardware solutions can still contribute to a variety of WELL
features. If you are perusing a WELL v2 pilot project, please
contact ASSA ABLOY for more detailed information on how we can
contribute to the new standard.
Air• Since some Air concepts from WELL v1 were moved to new
concepts (Thermal Comfort and Materials), the remaining Air
features concentrate more on clean air promotion and the
minimization of harmful contaminant exposure in the building design
phase.
Water• While this concept has changed the least, stricter
thresholds for contaminants have made this concept stronger.
Nourishment • WELL v2 has reduced the number of prerequisites,
which
will allow for more flexibility and easier implementation of
these features.
Light • In v1, this feature emphasizes indoor access to
circadian-
effective light. This feature has expanded to include on the
education of light’s impact on sleep quality, mood, and
productivity.
Movement (New) • The Fitness replacement, Movement incorporates
the
promotion of physical activity and active living, as well as
some ergonomic requirements from WELL v1’s Comfort concept.
Thermal Comfort (New)• This concept is an extraction from WELL
v1’s Comfort
concept, including requirements for temperature, humidity, air
speed, and efficiency.
Sound (New) • Another extension of the original Comfort
concept,
Sound refines requirements for acoustics.
Materials (New) • A new concept in WELL v2, Materials addresses
material
safety and transparency requirements from WELL v1’s Air and Mind
concepts.
Mind • The recategorized Mind features refine strategies
that
support mental and emotional health.
Community (New) • Community features cover many new and some
existing
requirements for equity and social cohesion from the v1 Mind
concept.
