“OUR STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION AND HAVE BEEN SUPPORTED

AT ALL TIMES BY THEIR DEDICATED TEACHERS AS WELL AS THEIR PARENTS AND CARERS.”

Congratulations to our Class of 2015. I am very proud of their significant individual achievements, but I would also like to congratulate them on the genuine spirit of collegiality exhibited amongst the peer group. Our students demonstrated hard work and determination and they were supported at all times by their dedicated teachers as well as their parents and carers. It does indeed take a village to raise a child.

Arden has a strong tradition of achieving solid Higher School Certificate results and a commitment to pursuing academic excellence. This brochure highlights the academic performance of our Class of 2015 and shares some of the stories behind these pleasing results. You will notice that our students strived to find balance during their HSC year and enjoyed participating in all areas of school life.

The ATARs our students achieved were most conducive for tertiary entrance, with 93% of Arden students receiving offers of degree places in tertiary courses through the Universities Admission Centre. It was exciting to see a number of students receive early entry offers to university courses and scholarships this year—a pleasing aspect of a more competitive tertiary sector.

I would especially like to thank our teachers for their enthusiasm, dedication and care. Our students have been encouraged to aim for their personal best, shown how to develop curiosity, creativity and critical thinking in their studies, and inspired to think about the positive and practical difference they can make in their community.

The Arden learning journey deliberately focuses on preparing our students for life after school and I am confident that these graduates are ready to make the transition to further study or work. They have also received an education grounded in the Christian faith, with a focus on compassionate, courageous service to others.

Well done Class of 2015. We look forward to hearing news of your continuing learning adventure and the powerful and positive impact you will individually make in our world.

The accessibility of teachers at Arden was highlighted by Ryan Atkins. “Their willingness, approachability and genuine care ensured that I was fully prepared for assessments and for the HSC exams,” he said.

For Samantha Wiltshire and Kevin Yu, it was the knowledge and enthusiasm of their teachers that made all the difference. “The biggest joy for me was seeing my teachers being extremely passionate and engrossed in their subjects,” said Samantha.

“The teachers at Arden continually pushed me to reach my potential, while encouraging me when I needed it the most,” said Kevin. “Their knowledge and passion for their subjects was infectious and they brought an energy and enthusiasm that fosters excellence in students.”

Students also appreciated how their teachers had prepared them for the future.

“My teachers showed me that dedication and hard work definitely pays off. They also taught me how to manage my time well, how to work in small groups and as part of larger groups,” said Elise Webb. Ryan Atkins felt that his teachers had taught him to be curious and questioning, to be independent in his own learning journey and to see the value of teamwork. “I learnt to explore outside my comfort zone and to back myself when a particular task seemed difficult,” he said.

Our HSC students consistently reported that their dedicated teachers played a critical role in their success, highlighting the wholistic care they experienced and the genuine passion teachers had for their subject areas.

“The teachers were very helpful; caring not only about our academic results but also our emotional, mental and spiritual welfare,” said Rebekah Bradshaw.

Sebastian Madden agreed. “Teachers were always actively involved with our work … from pastoral care and setting goals, to having a friendly chat each lesson to make sure we were all coping well throughout the HSC,” he said. “The teachers at Arden instil confidence within each student by motivating them and building a sense of belief in their own potential.”

“My teachers have modelled to me

through their actions and teaching style

what sort of an adult I myself would like

to become.”

Siobhan achieved an ATAR of 91.30. She will be studying a Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine and Master of Podiatry at Western Sydney University. She plans to work with athletes, focusing on biomechanics.

Siobhan’s passion for and participation in sporting activities led her to being awarded the Pierre De Coubertin Award in 2015. She was involved in Senior Touch Football, Senior Netball, the Hockey Championship Day, AICES Netball, Netball coaching, Touch Football refereeing and coaching, HZSA Triathlon, HZSA Athletics and AICES Athletics.

She also considers the completion of her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (before Year 12) significant. “It has shaped me into becoming the person I am today,” she said.

In 2013 she won the Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award.

Siobhan believes Arden has prepared her for the future. “I am well equipped to step out of high school and into university,” she said. “Arden has taught me to be confident, to believe in myself and to try new things.”

Her advice to future HSC students? “Relax and enjoy the ride. Even though it is the most important and stressful year, it is by far the best and most memorable.”

“Arden has been a wonderful

environment for me to complete not just

my HSC but my whole schooling journey

from Kindergarten onwards. In the Arden community we aren’t

just known by name—it really is

like a family.”

SIOBHAN KELLY

Kevin Yu is Arden’s 2015 Dux of the School. He also made the HSC All Rounders List and was placed first at Arden in Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, Physics and Chemistry. During his time at Arden, Kevin sought to be ‘well-rounded’, and he certainly achieved his goal. Kevin co-founded the Arden Science Club (“it was a joy to watch the group grow”), was the Stage Band pianist (achieving 8th Grade Piano AMEB), received the Arden Colours, and completed the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. He was also involved in Crusaders and the Social Justice Group. He achieved a High Distinction and a Bronze medal for the 2014 Australian Science Olympiad for Chemistry.

With an ATAR of 98.80, Kevin will be undertaking a double degree: a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical)/Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of New South Wales.

His advice for other students is to be disciplined: “Stay on top of everything, revise regularly, develop good habits and aim to write fast, and neat. Befriend BOSTES. Study the rubric carefully and ask your teachers about how to address and understand those elements well.”

“I will miss the tight-knit Arden community … everyone is known and cared for,” said Kevin. “Arden surrounds students in an all-encompassing sense of growth and nurturing. I feel I have matured emotionally, spiritually, physically and intellectually through my time at Arden, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

With an ATAR of 97.95, Kate Nicholls is set to undertake a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) at the University of New South Wales. Ultimately she wants to work in the healthcare industry.

Kate feels well prepared for further study. “I believe that the strong work ethic instilled in me as a student at Arden will prepare me well for university and into the future,” she said. “By always encouraging students to try their best, the school and the staff ensured that each student is prepared to reach their full potential after finishing school.”

Kate was ranked first at Arden in four HSC subjects: Mathematics, PDHPE, Geography and Biology. Her advice for those yet to finish school is to “fully use the support and resources available from the staff at Arden”.

Kate’s mum, Sue, said, “I have always been so grateful that both my children were able to thrive and prosper in such a caring and nurturing environment. The dedication and commitment of all the staff to every individual child is what I believe sets Arden apart. I couldn’t be more delighted with how Kate was supported and prepared for the HSC and her results are indicative of this.”

KATE NICHOLLS DREAMS OF WORKING IN HEALTHCARE

Elise Webb recommends that future HSC students consider early entry programs for university. She was accepted into the Global Leadership Entry Program at Macquarie University in June 2015 and will be undertaking a double degree: Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)/Bachelor of Human Sciences. Elise achieved an ATAR of 91.75 and hopes to work either as a psychologist or a physiotherapist in a sports-related field.

“Do your best and keep a balance in your life,” is another piece of advice that Elise has lived by. During her HSC year she was involved in Crusaders, SWAM (Students With a Mission), Social Justice Group, Dance and Catering Club.

Participating at all four of the HZSA carnivals (Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country and Triathlon) during her final year and becoming a Prefect and School Vice Captain are among Elise’s special achievements. She also competed at AICES and CIS Swimming and AICES Athletics.

“My time at Arden has helped me to develop many skills, such as organisation, working in a team and leadership. Arden gave me so many opportunities to be more than just my academic results and I always felt as though I was a person and not a number,” said Elise.

Matthew started his time at Arden when he was enrolled in Pre-School in 2002. His parents, George and Helen, consider that his time at Arden has been a true “family, teacher and student partnership”.

Matthew is now ready to pursue his dreams—he has been offered a place in the prestigious Bachelor of Information Technology Co-operative Scholarship Program at the University of Technology Sydney. His ATAR was 91.3.

He achieved first place in the State in Industrial Technology—Multimedia Technologies. His Industrial Technology major work was selected for InTech and also for Shape 2015 (a new technology exhibition staged by BOSTES).

His very proud Industrial Technology teacher, Mr Kris Simak, said that, “Matthew continually redefined the boundaries between school student and professionally competent digital artist”. He believes that it was Matthew’s willingness to take calculated risks that ensured his success.

“He demonstrated great courage in the risks that he took with this project … weekly we would dream up crazy ideas that he could implement. He has a humble demeanour so he would continually ask questions and resourcefully built a strong repertoire of skills.”

Matthew was also on the Distinguished Achievers List for receiving a top band result in Mathematics Extension 1, English Extension 1 and Industrial Technology.

Like many of his peers, he achieved balance by also focusing on extracurricular activities. He was selected into the U19 Men’s New South Wales Volleyball Team, participated in the Stage Band, the Vocal Ensemble, Debating, Crusaders and Senior Basketball. He received the School Council Academic and Community Endeavour Award in Year 12.

“Arden has fulfilled our desire to have a school that supported and encouraged the values being taught at home,” said George and Helen. “We will be forever grateful for all that Arden and its staff have done for Matthew. The biggest influence on Matthew’s approach to learning were the dedicated teaching staff he was so fortunate to have throughout his time at Arden.”

POST SCHOOL DESTINATIONS OF THE CLASS OF 2015

Arden’s Class of 2015 has continued a tradition of aspiring to access tertiary education after completing secondary school.

As part of preparing our students for life beyond school, Arden’s Careers Adviser interviewed each student during the course of Year 12 to discuss their desired post school destination. The students were counselled about their plans and given guidance about the required documentation and how to prepare themselves to meet the necessary selection criteria. Many students applied for and were accepted for early offer entry schemes.

Offers of places93% (75) of Arden students surveyed received offers of degree places in tertiary courses through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC), with the remainder choosing University Preparation courses, Transition to Work programs, Apprenticeship and TAFE study. *

Majority of students gain entrance into preferred courses 64% of all 81 students surveyed were offered the exact post school destination that they had desired when interviewed. Some students changed their preferences after being interviewed.

72% (52) of the 72 students choosing Commonwealth Supported Places at public universities were offered their first choice of course, with most being accepted into their preferred university.

43% of the 72 students desiring entry into tertiary courses through UAC were offered places in courses despite having a lower ATAR rank than the published ATAR cut-off. In these cases a variety of bonus points and early offer schemes were operating. Universities are increasingly using these schemes as an alternative means of assessing potential success. Arden supports applications for these schemes which include subject specific performance, educational access for disability or disadvantage, local area catchment schemes, global leadership programs, Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS), and elite athletes and performers consideration.

Many teachers noted the encouragement the students had given each other throughout their HSC year.

“We’ve had fantastic results for individual students and also a positive result for the cohort as a whole—a result of students working together,” said Mr Joshua Harnwell, Director of Teaching and Learning. “The strong results highlight the mature approach that students have had to their learning—being concerned with their own progress, but also with the progress of others in their class.”

Mrs Lisa Neale, English Extension 2 teacher, described the group as mature and cheerful. “They collaborated well and were always keen to encourage each other to do well,” she said.

She was particularly proud of the effort many had put into their studies.

“I am very proud of a number of my students who, while they did not necessarily score the highest marks in the year group, were delighted with their final results because they knew that these results reflected a steady improvement over a long period of hard work and determination to achieve at their best,” she said.

Mr Simon Przydacz, Head of Senior School, noted that the Class of 2015 had shown a breadth of leadership and should be commended for their engagement, inclusiveness and in particular, their creativity.

“The ability to think, learn, communicate, write, design and problem solve creatively has impressed me the most about this year group. This augurs well for them as they enter an increasingly global world,” he said. “As students leave Arden they go into a workforce and world which is dynamic and in many ways uncertain due to the rapid pace of change.”

“There are a plethora of individual, subject and statistical highlights from the HSC and ATAR results which make me extremely proud. However, the major highlight for

me has been the sheer number of students who received early entry offers to university courses and scholarships. The fact that strong ATARs in our students are valued as highly as leadership, co-curricular involvement, service and personal characteristics, values and strengths, is a strong endorsement of the richly diverse education our students experience at Arden.”

A partnership between students, staff and parents as well as the hard work and determination shown by individuals, all contributed to this year’s pleasing HSC results. Mrs Kathryn McDonald, Acting Head of English, summed up the Class of 2015 as “talented, clever and passionate”.

“The Class of 2015 were dynamic, creative,

compassionate learners.”
