So here are my thoughts on this and of course the board will have a say about this too. I want to see three manufactures step up and put their name in bold as sponsors. Quite frankly the amount of money they sponsor the event with is really irrelevant. What I am looking for is someone else willing to put themselves out there to do this. I figure it this way, if a manufacture is willing to sponsor an event and deal with any potential issues, then maybe we should be willing to do the same. At some point in time we need to get back to some kind of normal. Anyone going on this trip will be doing so at their own risk, but we as an organization have to be responsible as well. So like above, but with a twist, please send me an email with your rep and or manufactures agreement to support the fishing trip at [email protected]. in person.
Please remember, the ASPE Education web site will allow us to join 15 min before the meeting starting time. The presentation will not start earlier than 6:00 pm. This month we have a tabletop presentation by Nibco Valve.
The 2021 ASPE Tech Symposium, will be held in San Diego Marriott Mission Valley hotel on September 22-26. The Society is trying to meet this event in person. The registration will be open in April 2021. There will be the Technical Symposium Product Show on September 2021, 23 & 24. I hope you all will see you there.
ASPE President Carol Johnson, CPD, LEED AP, CFI, FASPE, recently appointed Nicholas Hipp, CPD, of the St. Louis Chapter as the ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) Liaison to the Board of Directors. In this role Nicholas will be responsible for communicating regularly on behalf of the Board with AYP members, and vice versa, as well as managing the network of Chapter AYP Liaisons.
Have you been following the lively plumbing design discussions on ASPE Connect? In this new regular feature on ASPE Pipeline, we will highlight current discussion threads
continued on page 20
On behalf of the ASPE-LA officers, I would like to thank Mr. Christoph Lohr PE, CPD, LEED AP BD+C, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, IAPMO. In his presentation, he is talking about how engineers perform hot water return by using rules of thumb and estimations, which has led to an increase in materials and a decrease in inefficiency. He presented the engineering principles for proper hot water return sizing and selection. He covered information from college level “Energy Conversion Design” and “Piping System Configuration” and reviewed how to apply these principles. If you have questions or want to discuss, please contact Ms. Mr. Christoph Lohr at [email protected]. Also, if you need his presentation and the reference materials, please let me know, I’ll send them to you.
There were 46 members who attending the March meeting. This month’s meeting will be on April 7, 2021 and will be presented by Mr. Adam Haussman, Account Manager Design & Specification Delco Sales. He will present about the “Fundamentals of Heat Pump Water Heaters”. This will be another virtual meeting since we are not able to meet in person. I hope, around summertime, we will be able to meet
While there is a clear indication that construction is also slowly but surely recovering from pandemic, mostly due to lower financial rates, winter storm system with extremely low temperatures likely contributed to weakness in employment and hours. The construction workweek fell by 1.1 hour in February. And finally, LADBS reported record number of permits pulled in December 2020. Seems like we are gradually getting
back on track.
Reminder - 2021 Technical Symposium will be held in September 22-26, 2021 in San Diego. At this point ASPE is accepting symposium presentation proposals. The sessions should be geared toward one of the following: entry level (one to five years of experience), intermediate (six to nine years of experience), or
advanced (10+ years of experience) and limited to 90 minutes. Format to be a lecture, a panel discussion, or a hands-on demonstration. The deadline to submit a presentation proposal is February 28, 2021. If interested please visit Presentation submission site (click here) for additional details and preferred topics.
Be well, stay well.
Hello fellow ASPE LA members. Hope you are doing well.
I would like to share with you some interesting data that I’ve discovered while reading some publications in U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website (https://www.bls.gov/ ). According to USBLS, job losses in the Architectural and Engineering profession during 2020 peaked at 6% which is nearly double the usual unemployment rate of 3.22%. However, as of February 2021 it went back to a new low of 3.1%. here is the chart from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publication that reflects changes just for February 2021:

John Zagorski has done a great job running the golf tournament of late, but all good things must come to an end. John mentioned wanting to step down after this year’s tournament. With the Covid stuff happening, the tournament keeps getting pushed back. So, I think it’s a great time to make this transition. So anyone that loves golf as much as John does and would like to see the tournament grow, please reach out to me. We need a chair to take over this event. It’s a lot of work. I would suggest you talk to John before signing on the dotted line. If you’re interested, please send me an email at [email protected] and copy John Zagorski at [email protected].
So we all know outdoor events are really safe with regards to Covid. So I think it’s time to get our picnic going this year. We might have to find a venue that will allow it. Once again Ventura seems to move faster with opening things up. We will discuss this at our board meeting. Yes, we will be having a board meeting again finally. We really haven’t had much to discuss so I haven’t had one in a few months. I am getting excited about things getting back to normal again.
I was able to get on our Zoom call early this month and I had a great time catching up with friends. If you can, please get on the call early and hang out for a while with us. It’s the best way we have to talk to our friends right now. We also keep the Zoom call going after the meeting and normally have 8 to 10 people on the call for 15 to 30 minutes. So if you can’t get on early, try to stay a little late.
In closing, for the first time in months, I feel like things are moving along so we can finally get back to some kind of normal. I am so excited for this. I hope to be able to take my Covid shot very soon, then I will be on cloud nine. Forgot to tell everyone, I went racing again last week finished 1st won $260.00.
that are generating a lot of interest in the community. Also, at the end you will find some questions that need advice.
As you know, Texas was hit with a major winter storm that caused fire protection and domestic water pipes to burst in homes and commercial businesses. What are some ways to prevent this from happening in the future? How do my colleagues who design buildings in the northern portion of the United States design their systems to withstand the bitter cold weather?
The ASPE Education recommended that we not use Internet Explorer to access education.aspe.org. All nonmember meeting attendees will be charged $25. You can speak directly to the chapter officer or join ASPE to receive this meeting at no cost to you.
As usual, do not hesitate to email any board member for any topics that you may want to see in any of our technical programs. Watch your email for the next meeting date and see you all at the next meeting.
Please take care of yourselves and of each other.Stay safe.
