PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Quazi Happy September every-one! The hazy daze of summer are behind us. It’s a little bitter sweet as we begin to close our pools and store the patio furni-ture. Fortunately there are some things to get excited about such as E-A-G-L-E-S football. Some-thing else to get excited about is the year ahead for the Philly
Chapter of ASPE.
“I know it’s important, I honestly do but we’re talking about plumbing. We’re talking about plumbing man. We’re
talking about plumbing. We’re talking about plumbing. We’re not talking about HVAC. We’re talking about
plumbing.”
Check out our updated website www.aspephila.org. There’s valuable information to be found such as the Philly Plumbing Code on the links page. We added a virtual calendar that you can add to your Google or Outlook calendars. Sponsors and their contact info are listed on the Affiliates page. Lots of great stuff just a couple clicks away!
The year kicks off on September with our 20th Annual Golf Outing to be held on Thursday September 12th at Pennsauken Country Club.
We are offering both sessions of our Plumbing Design School this year. Classes begin on Monday Septem-ber 23rd and will be held at the Clarion Hotel. If you are interested in expanding your plumbing knowl-edge base or are just getting into the design of plumbing systems, these classes are built for you. Seats are still available.
Meeting qualifies for 1‐Hour Continuing Education Unit (No certificates will be provided)

September 2013
Welcome back.
I hope everyone has had an exciting, memorable, restful, rejuvenating, or whatever summer that you planned on having.
It’s ASPE time again.
I’m looking forward to this coming 2013/2014 session starting with the upcoming Philadel-phia ASPE Trade Show in October and the plumbing design classes I & II starting this September, as well the monthly technical meeting with new and exciting topics.
During this session of ASPE I hope to again try to bring you information dealing with signifi-cant updates and changes to codes and
legislation that affect our industry and possi-ble insights these may have on our profes-sional lives.
I look forward to seeing all you at this Sep-tember technical meeting and at the ASPE Trade Show.

MEMBERSHIP NEWSThirty days hath September
Thank you to all who participated in our 20th annual golf outing this month. It was a sold out event, with sun during the day. Fortunately the rain held off until dinner. I think we can all agree that this was the best outing yet. We are always looking for your feed-back on the outing. Have a suggestion? Please let me know.
Our next technical meeting is Thursday September 26nd, 2013, presented by Tom Pitch-erello, New Jersey Subcode Official. Tom will make sure we are all up to date on the news of the day for design and construction in New Jersey. Make sure to reserve your seat to-day!!!
Before I go, I need to tell you about our Biannual Product Exhibition & Technical Seminars. Make sure on Thurs-day October 24th you come on down to the Clarion Hotel in Essington, Pa (previously the Ramada Inn Air-port).
There are very few plumbing product shows in our area. Fortunately we have ASPE Philadelphia’s show. Do you want to get up to date and current all the new products offered today by the best manufacturers? Then you need to walk the product exposition. Interested in continuing your education in this vital industry or need continuing education credits? Get in your car and attend one of our seminars. In my opinion ASPE Philadel-phia is best product show in our area. I know I will be there!

September 2013
Hello everyone:
Well it is that time again to get back to work on all the activities here at ASPE Philadelphia Chap-ter.
First of all I hope everyone had a great summer filled with lots of Family time outdoors.,
For me it was an exciting time be-ing retired and just enjoying the freedom to do what I like when I like to do it!
But something happened, I spent a lot of time work-ing on this year’s Product Show along with Ernie and Clay. We now have approximately 71 booths with several new Vendors.
The Clarion Hotel has been there with us working to provide the best services available for the show. Clay
is continuing to receive the deposits and will be send-ing out second reminders to the vendors who have not kept up with the schedule.
Great news on the Plumbing Class schedule for this year, we have added several new topics and have many students for both classes ( ONE ) and (TWO) . Just a reminder to all of last year’s students to get their application in to me along with you checks as soon as possible. Please go to our website to printout the application and get it in the mail to me here in Media.
I look forward to seeing everyone this September 23, at 6:30 at the same location as last year, Clarion Ho-tel and Conference Center formerly the Ramada Inn.
Best Regards,
Mike

SPEAKING OUT Shame on Them I am always intrigued about the quality control that is provided by the manufac-turer’s product information. Sometimes it’s a cadd or whatever graphic package they are using error. Some-times it’s the results of a
junior member of the team. Too often the exam-ple layouts showing the product have errors some simple, some outrageous.
I was reading the August “Plumbing Engi-neer” magazine, my source for many articles, and decided to pursue a manufacturer’s claim for the best, most efficient water heaters. I went to their web site and began reviewing the piping ar-rangements for single and multiple heater hook-ups. I especially look at the piping, pumps, valves
and symbols used to connect their products. Mis-takes here often lead me to question other claims that are made about the product. Here are the layout features I found questionable:
1. In each of the heater hookups (diagrams) the strainer on the cold water supply was shown in the wrong direction of flow (the strainer on an instan-taneous heater is a good thing).
2. In the commercial buildings layout where sev-eral hot water fixtures were indicated, no circula-tion was indicated. The internal circulator in each heater was not indicated. Are they activated based on the duty heater? Unless the fixtures are very very close to the heater, the internal cir-culation pump capacity should be disclosed and in-dicated in the flow diagram.
3. Check valves in several diagrams were shown between the heater and the storage tank without

any mention of the internal circulating pump in each heater.
4. None of the diagrams included a shut off valve and check valve on the cold water supply.
5. None of the diagrams included an expansion tank. This is good practice and code required for water services with check valves and back flow preventers.
None of the diagrams included multiple water temperature distribution systems often necessary in commercial buildings.
In any case, what started out appearing to be a credible product left me with a negative view of the manufacturers’ advertisement. I know they are well intentioned, but all they need to do is ask us to review their work. We often ask them to
review ours.
Having difficulty remaining positive,
