OUR MARINE WILDLIFE / A NATUREZA MARITIMA• The Algarve marine environment includes
many unique and fragile ecosystems, and is home to many species, including seabirds, shorebirds, whales and dolphins. A deep sea oil or gas disaster will leave our local marine flora and fauna vulnerable to the toxic effects of oil and gas.
THE FISHING INDUSTRY / A PESCA1.Commercial fishing rank as one of our most
economic mechanisms that needs to be preserved, while recreational fishing is one of the Algarve’s most popular activities. A deep sea oil or gas disaster as well as seismic surveys impacts directly on our local fishing industries resulting in both the loss of valuable fish stocks and the loss of industry jobs.
TOURISM - TURISMO1.The pristine coastlines and unique wildlife of
the Algarve attract tens of thousands of international tourists annually, injecting an economic boost into the region.
A deep sea oil or gas disaster will have a pivotal role in tourists' decisions to visit the Algarve.
RECREATIONAL WATER SPORTS / DESPORTOS AQUATICOS1.The Algarve offers unparalleled opportunities
for ocean sports such as surfing, kayaking, wind surfing, jet skiing, diving and boating. A deep sea oil or gas disaster will invariably impact many local businesses, organisations, and individuals who enjoy the Algarve’s waters.
ALGARVE ASSETS / BENS E RECURSOS NATURAIS1.We should be protecting our national assets, not selling them off to be
exploited by foreign corporations, or endangering them by oil or gas drilling without adequate safety measures.
CLIMATE / CLIMA1.The climate change impacts of fossil
fuels are disastrous. Portugal should be investing in clean energy solutions instead of investing in extracting the last drops of oil from the ends of the earth. We should be climate pioneers not fossil fools.
OUR WAY OF LIVE / A NOSSA MANEIRA DE VIVER 1.This is a fundamental part of living in the
Algarve, whether you are Portuguese or an Expat, and we must protect it not only for ourselves, but also for all of our visitors and for future generations.

Hydraulic Fracturing is a how natural gas is extracted from shale rock hundreds of feet below ground.Because dangerous chemicals and explosions are used in the process, concerned citizens are demanding that safeguards are in place to protect ground and surface waters, air, land, and the health of humans and livestock.Currently, these safeguards are NOT in place, thanks to gas industry lobbyists in Europe.
• Sustainable jobs in rural communities• Vibrant markets• Excellent reputation for quality produce – Honey, Cork, etc• Currently mostly organic • Expanding local food production with much potential• Lots of small family businesses.
WHAT IMPACT HAS FRACKING HAD ON FARMING AROUND THE WORLD?
FRACKING – AGRICULTURE
Fracking contaminates AIR, SOIL and WATER (above and below ground)• Valves and pipes break down through corrosion and other
processes, causing leakages• Cement casings break down over time causing leaks of toxic
chemicals into the environment• Even if chemicals are not used in fracking, the water that
comes back up (flowback) will contain dangerous substances. These may include lead, mercury, arsenic, benzene and radioactive elements which can leak into soil, water and air
• PORTFUEL‘most likely (“expected”) development scenario’:
• Up to 60 multi-wellpads will be needed with up to 24 wells per pad.
• Each multi-well pad would be 2.6 hectares (6.5 acres)• Maximum total of land surfaced needed• We talking about 150 hectares (420 acres)• 40,000 acres of underground development.
WHAT DOES TOURISM MEAN FOR TAVIRA? Value tourism-Value the tourist-Value what the tourist values!
FRACKING – TOURISM
Why do visitors come to Tavira?• Restful and relaxing holiday – peace and tranquillity• Quality of the scenery - beautiful and un-spoilt landscape• Natural Heritage – e.g. beaches, Ria Formosa, etc• Cultural Heritage: musicians, artists, photographers,
writers etc.• Built Heritage – e.g. Churches, etc• Golf• Fishing and boating• Outdoor pursuits: SUP, trail walking, water sports, etc.• Good quality food and restaurants
WHAT IMPACT WILL FRACKING HAVE ON TOURISM IN TAVIRA?
FRACKING – TOURISM
• Our roads will be congested with heavy trucks and machinery• Fish stocks may be contaminated• There is a serious risk of earth tremors• Our rural landscape will become an industrialised zone• There is a risk to our natural heritage• The air will be heavy with dust and smog• Rivers and waterways are at risk of pollution• Noise and light pollution are inevitable• There will be public health concerns• Tavira will lose its clean and green image
• Are we going to risk our tried and tested sectors in which we have invested so much personal and public money for a vague promise of jobs which are likely to be:
• Far fewer than has been suggested• Most likely low-paid and short-term• A fraction of those likely to be lost in tourism & agriculture?
• The Ria Formosa is a network of streams/rivers. This network of waterways is the lifeline for many species.
• Millions of gallons of water are required to frack a single well; where will the water come from to frack over a 1000 wells and where will it end up?
• Flowback fluid from fracked wells will contain toxically high levels of chemicals. If this fluid leaks into the surrounding streams & rivers there will be large scale, long-term contamination.
• If spawning streams & rivers are contaminated, fish stocks and aquatic life will be killed The diminished fish stocks and risk to indigenous species may be so severe that our lakes and rivers may never recover.
• Anglers come to the Algarve from all over the world to enjoy a unique fishing experience in clean waters and a tranquil rural setting.
• Thousands of angling licenses are sold annually• Hundreds are employed in the fishing and aquaculture industry. • If their livelihoods are impacted were will they find replacement
The problem is that the injected water is mixed with a cocktail of chemicals and the process of pumping it below round releases gases such as methane as well as salts and metals.
In addition, much of the contaminated water used in the fracking process resurfaces, and is classed as hazardous waste that needs to be treated – an added potential pollutant.
