Painter & Prof. Faculty of fine art Helwan university
Asmaa Elnawawy
Asmaa Elnawawy :
Born in 1981 and based in Cairo, Asmaa El Nawawy established her own
art career from year 1999 as visual artist and an assistant lecturer in
Painting department in faculty of fine arts, Helwan University, Cairo from
year 2004. Asmaa obtained her MFA year 2009 from same faculty in( the
role of symbols and Ornament in the structure of artwork in symbolism
movement) and her BHD in (The way Art Nouveau& Art Deco dealing with
The human form and how that effect the artwork of the Researcher) after
receiving her BA from the painting department in year 2003. Inspired by the
Egyptian and world arts history, Nawawy’s use always three elements in her
own painting practices (the woman, ornament and conceptual colors
relations), sometimes it can be trough animal ornament to add her symbolic
meaning to the artworks. Since 1999, she participated in several local and
international exhibitions in Egypt, France, Germany, Syria, Azerbaijan, Italy
and Greece. Nawawy won awards and acquisitions in Museum of modern
arts in Cairo, Bibliothequa Alexandria, Dubai and Belgium
Vision & Concept :
The world of symbols and motifs carry many attributes of globalization.
Once you see the symbol you can guess from which country is it, and
even from any historical era. Symbols reflect simply and clearly the
human history with all its complexity. It is an alternative to language in
the process of human communication. I t could be considered a tool of
nonverbal communication. I have found in my own research of symbols
and motifs belonged to various times and places that symbols uniquely
express privacy of meanings. Symbols connect human civilizations
together. For example, many symbols became well recognized
universally. This made me absolutely convinced that the modern world
with its contemporary trait and globalization qualities could be seen as
multi floor building. The tenants of this building are countries sharing the
same pressures and circumstances despite the fundamental differences
among them.
In my paintings, I adopted the idea of receiving and giving. I mix
Women's body-with Symbols. I use symbols that belong to different
cultures, such as the Islamic, the ancient Egyptian, and the American. I
link the woman and her biological role to the
earth represented in the symbols. Women’s power lies in their
weakness, which I believe will remain a controversial concept in the
contemporary world. I tried to escape the traditional use of femininity as
a tool for pleasure or commercial advertising. Instead I tried to provide a
search for women’s contemporary role that does not necessarily serve
men entity.
I am a woman whose work is often inseparable from her life. I illustrate
women who resemble their reality and dreams because they worth
highlighting, as I still believe that women are an easy target to racism
and extremism throughout the ages.
Lately in my new project I have been mixing women figures with
butterflies and selection of forbid traffic signs. I also use paper dolls
which traditionally used in spiritual ceremonies to prevent or cure evil
eye and envy.
