Since these aren't granny squares, I found that by joining in a corner with a sc, ch 3, sc in same corner, then (ch 3, sk 2 sts, sc in next) to the end of the row, then sc, ch 3, sc in last stitch of row worked very well. Continue to do this around each side of each square. From there, you can follow the directions for the flat braid crochet join as given. I chose to carry the black and aran throughout the hand as I worked by crocheting over the top of the color not in use. I did not carry any yarn through the outer color surrounding each hand. Alternatively, you can use individual bobbins for each color change. Once you've finished the entire blanket, you can crochet any border you'd like around the edges.
