LETTER FROM OUR PARISH COORDINATOR
Dear friends, Several of you enjoyed the additional background information here about our Sunday readings a few weeks back, so I thought I’d offer the same for today’s readings. Exegesis of the 1st Reading: Exodus 17:3–7* As the tribes of Israel journey from Egypt to Sinai, God challenges them to grow in faith. Already God pro-vided manna in the desert as a way of instructing them. Now they encamp at Rephidim, where they discover there is no water to drink. Ideally they should see in this situation an opportunity to display faith by turning to God for assistance. But the tribes fall short of ideal faith; they lodge a complaint against Moses, accusing him of putting their lives in jeopardy. They even wonder if there was any advantage to their leaving Egypt where they at least had enough to survive. The reaction on the part of Israel is so extreme that Moses believes his own life is now in jeopardy. Fearing the people are about to hurl stones at him, Moses cries out to God. It seems Moses likewise has yet to trust in God’s protective love. So, how does God address the concerns of both Moses and the people? First, God gives Moses the assurance of divine protection. God will be standing between him and the people. And then God gives signs of assurance to the people. They will see their elders standing with Moses; they will see in the hand of Moses the shepherd’s staff that he used so dramatically in Egypt. Once Moses strikes the rock with that staff, water will flow out for the people to drink. Thus God has removed the fear of death and replaced it with assurance of life. The final verse of the reading clearly expresses its spiritual message. The place was given names meaning test (Massah) and complaint (Meribah). Both names reflect the failure on Israel’s part to realize that God was truly in their midst to protect them from harm. Exegesis of the Gospel: John 4:5–42 The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well is a highly creative combination of dialogue and narrative, as this is Johannine storytelling at its very best. On one level, the story is about the process the Samaritan woman goes through to recognize who Jesus really is. She begins with “sir,” then moves to “prophet,” and finally concludes with “Christ.” On another level the story is about Jesus’ identity as “living water.” The term “living water” means more than simply fresh, running water. As applied to Jesus, living water is “life-giving water.” Geographically, it’s also good to keep in mind that Jesus is in the foreign and forbidden land of Samaria. Now, whether he had to go through Samaria to get to Galilee is disputed’ but it’s as much a theological necessity as it is a geographical one. So, we see him chose to rest at a well at noon after the normal crowd would have dispersed. And, to his surprise, a woman shows up at the well to get water. As a Jew, Jesus should have nothing to do with Samaritans. And as a male, he was not supposed to talk to an unaccompanied female in public. But He quickly violates both policies by assertively asking the woman for a drink, and a conversation immediately ensues over Jesus’ claim to be living water. The woman at this point cannot grasp the deeper meaning of water that Jesus is proposing. Further, in discussing the woman’s husbands, Jesus shows a knowledge about her life be-yond anything he should know. This so impresses the woman that she moves from calling him “sir” to believing that he is a “prophet.” A discussion then unfolds about Gerizim versus Jerusalem as the proper place for worship. Again Jesus moves the discus-sion by claiming that neither place is suitable – a geographical correction. The disciples arrive, not knowing what has transpired between Jesus and the Samarian woman. She leaves her water jar and goes to tell other Samaritans what she has discovered. She no longer needs a water jar because she has found the life-giving water. The outcasts have become believers, but, more to the point, the work of spreading the good news of the Messiah has not been met with open arms. It took a little work. This story is evidence of not only the compassion of Christ for those in the margins, but also the difficulties at times for the Word to take root. Persistence is the key. A great reminder for all of us this Lenten season! Deacon Chuck *based on a selection from FRANCISCAN MEDIA, 28 W. Liberty Street, Cincinnati, OH • www.FranciscanMedia.org
As of March 2, 2020, the Archdiocese of Chicago -- with guidance from the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship – has issued the following steps to be implemented at all Masses until further notice in an effort to prevent the possible spread of the corona virus.
There will be no distribution of Holy Communion via the chalice. Individuals are asked to receive Holy Communion reverently in open hands -- and not on the tongue. Please refrain from holding hands during the Lord’s Prayer. Note that our Holy Water fonts have been removed. Please refrain from physical contact (handshaking) during the Sign of Peace, and in the Narthex.
Thanks for your cooperation. We will continue to keep you updated as we are notified by the Archdiocese.

ORTHODOX ICON, “ST. PHOTINI”
Lent Week 3 – March 15 Orthodox Icon, “St. Photini” Byzantine icons are portals to the divine presence. The depictions are heavenly—the gold backgrounds speak of divine truth. The serene, symmetrical faces in-vite us into the order of Heaven. Here is a peace that surpasses all understanding. We slow down before the icon and encounter the divine presence. In this icon of the woman at the well, we see the encounter of Christ with the Samaritan woman, who in the Orthodox tradition has a name: St. Photini, the illuminated or enlightened one. She meets Jesus while he is seated by the well. She approaches with her vessel to get water. Their hands indicate for us that they are engaged in conversation. On Christ’s right hand, his third finger bends in, a subtle sign of his divine na-ture. The two mountains behind them recall their words, reflecting that they come from two different backgrounds. Central to the icon are two architectural elements—the well, and the walled city in the distance. The well has a peculiar shape; it’s low and shaped like a cross and is sugges-tive of a baptismal font. It invites us to enter into the death of Christ so as to rise with him in the Resurrection—the very essence of the Paschal Mystery. We are beckoned to the font to seek the living water that delivers us from death to eternal life.
Behind the font looms a walled city. It is Jerusalem, the scene of the Paschal Mystery. The dark, gaping gate is like a tomb. Red curtains hint of the passion and bloodshed that will soon occur there. Yet the curtains are drawn back. Like the font, these curtains are inviting us into the tomb but also showing us the way out. The woman at the well enters the tomb as she acknowledges in truth the painful path of her life. Christ illumi-nates her heart. He invites her to move beyond her current life. She enters the tomb of this in truth and accepts the living water. She is transformed from an outcast to an evangelizer. She will bring her joy back to her com-munity and compel them to follow her to Christ. Through meeting Christ, St. Photini finds light in her dark-ness, a light she will shine to others.

Welcome to Our First Grade World First grade is a busy world of learning, fun and friends. Our school family shares activities that engage and challenge our students. The first graders have learned a lot about numbers and tried to see how many math facts they could write down in two minutes!! Reading is such an important part of each day. We met the Winter Reading Challenge and enjoyed a quiet reading time in our comfy pajamas. Books are a true adventure to share! Science helps us learn about the world around us. We learned about penguins and took part in the Shedd’s Live from Behind the Scenes penguin program, which took
us live into the Shedd Aquarium’s actual pen-guin habitat. We spoke to trainers that are part of the animal care team and virtually visited with our penguin friends! We had an informative visit from the Honorable Judge Aurelia Pucinski. She read us a story about Abraham Lincoln and told us some interesting infor-mation about her job.
