I am surprised given the topic that the children were not interviewed (p. 8). (Yet on p. 18 Ajeng has defined “popular girls”, presumably in talking informally with the researcher. This indicates capability to add richness and depth to the data.) Could a critical incident approach have been adopted where the researcher presented some fieldnotes to the teachers and asked for their perspectives? Asked Bunda Sari about her response? And so on? More nuanced understandings related to a range of influences on children’s lives might have then been presented. In addition, given the range of methods and participants indicated here, it is then weak to rely on only the fieldnotes in the manuscript.

Further, I was perturbed that after the discussion of some ethical considerations that the situations reported on pp. 21-22 were simply observed by the researcher. When children’s physical well-being is at risk, it is important that the research agenda becomes secondary. The messages that children received about adult power in those situations are a concern. No description of data analysis procedures is included.

RESULT

ResultsFigure 2 shows that the most frequentdiagnosis strategies were “Historicalinforma>on” (29% of the 182 observedstrategies), “Least effort” (11.5%),“Reconstruc>on” (9.8%) and “Sensorycheck” (8.7%) (see Appendix). Strategiessuch as “Historical informa>on”, whichcheck available informa>on about thefailure history, and “Least effort” are two low cost technical checks whichshorten the >me needed for diagnosisac>vi>es (seeAppendix). Strategies such as“Splithalf”, leadingtoabinaryreduc>onof the problem space, and “Informa>onuncertainty” playonlyaminorroleinreal-lifefailurediagnosisofmachinetools(1.1%,seeFigure2).
