PREFACE
UNESCO in cooperation with the International Union of Nutritional SciencesFUNS) has compiled this ASIAAND PACIFIC COMPENDIUM OF HIGHER EDUCATIONPROGRAMMES IN FAMILY & HOME ECONOMICS, NUTRITION, FOOD SCIENCEAND TECHNOLOGY AND HEALTH SCIENCES.1 The purpose of this compendium is tooffer Asian and Pacific Member States of UNESCO information on available degree pro-grammes in these areas in order to assist interested students in their search for highereducation and to provide institutions themselves with facts and information on similar trai-ning programmes offered elsewhere in the region. Three other compendiums of the samenature are available for Africa, the Arab States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
UNESCO receives innumerable requests from students for guidance on training infields concerned with the home and family environment, food and nutrition and health. This compendium will be expanded as necessary after its first diffusion based on com-ments and information provided by readers. In any future edition, we hope to provide qua-litative information on the content and substance of training programmes in order to des-cribe how higher education programmes are responding to prevailing human develop-ment concerns.
The information reported on each institution has been obtained from publishedinternational sources and, wherever possible, from the institution itself. The following refe-rences were consulted:
Association of Commonwealth Universities, Commonwealth UniversitiesYearbook, (London: The Bath Press, 1991 ).
Association of Commonwealth Universities, Commonwealth UniversitiesYearbook. (London: The Bath Press, 1992).
International Association of Universities, International Handbook of Universities,(Great Britain: Stockton Press, 1991).
--- World of Learning, (London: Europa Publications Limited, 1991).
--- World of Learning (London: Europa Publications Limited, 1 992).
While compiling this compendium, we communicated several times with eachinstitution and we are especially pleased with the cooperative spirit of exchangeexpressed by those contacted. Although we have gathered more information on
1 The International Union of Nutritional Sciences is a non-governmental organisation established to pro-mote international cooperation in the scientific study of nutrition and its application; to encourage research and theexchange of scientific information in nutritional sciences; to provide a means of communication with other organi-sations; and to encourage participation in the activities of the International Union of Scientific Councils (ICSU)of which the Union is a member.
some institutions and less on others, for consistency reasons, we have standardized thepresentation of information.
The institution name appears on the top of each page and at the bottom rightside of each page there is an indication of when the data on that institution was lastupdated. The fields of study o ffered are indicated according to the way that they aredesignated by the particular institution. Here, we have tried to identity institutions ineach country with fields of study most closely related to home economics, food andnutrition and health sciences.2 Student enrolment applies to the particular Centre,Faculty or Department as specified in the institution entry at the top of each page.Information on student enrolment a n d school fees were obtained from the refe-rences cited above or the institution itself (in this case, the figures apply to the yearin which the information was updated by the institution). Invariably, with each newacademic year there will be fluctuations. This information should be regarded as indi-c a t i v e .
An important number of relevant institutions are found in the Philippines, theRepublic of Korea, Thailand, China and India and many of them are offering post-graduate degree programmes. The University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji, is animportant centre serving the Pacific countries. We were unable to identify relevantprogrammes in Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, Maldives and Myanmar.3
This compendium has been a collaborative project with the I n t e r n a t i o n a lUnion of Nutritional Sciences and UNESCO. D r. Rajammal P. Devadas, Vi c eChancellor of the Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education forWomen (Deemed University), Coimbatore, India, serves as Chairperson of the I U N SCommittee associated with this effort. UNESCO as part of its Individual InternshipProgramme has offered numerous young professionals the opportunity to contributeto this information exchange project.4 Ms. Wendy Heilman started the initial researchon the four compendiums. Ms. Vanessa Holtzer and Ms. Ana Michel provided furtherassistance with the data collection and processing. Ms. Janelle Miller assisted withfinalisation of all four compendiums.5
2 In Papua New Guinea, the closest field of study identified to these areas is public health.
3This compendium does not include high-income countries in Asia and Oceania (e.g., Australia, Japan,New Zealand).
4The UNESCO Individual Internship Programme has, since its inception, been of mutual benefit to UNES-CO and participating interns. The programme offers young professionals the opportunity to work under supervi-sion within the Organisation in areas directly related to education, science, the social and human sciences, cultu-re and communication. Interns volunteer up to three months of their time to the programme in exchange for theexperience gained.
5 Special appreciation is given to Ms. Josephine Chona and Ms. Allison Hannigan for their computer assis-tance with data entry. Ms. Chona was especially helpful to the Interns throughout the preparation process.
