• To grasp the basic structure and situation of agriculture, forestry and rural areas
• To compile small area statistics and promote local agriculture policy
• To acquire population information for effective use in sampling surveys

• Survey Respondent: Management entities
• Method: Enumerators distribute the questionnaires and collect the results. The response to the questionnaire can be reported on-line in certain designated areas (31 Munisiparities).
2. Survey of Rural Area (Municipality questionnaire)
• Survey Respondent: All municipalities (1,896)
• Method: Distribution of the questionnaires and collection of the results on-line or by mail from regional centers

• Survey Respondent: All rural communities (138,256)
• Method: Enumerators distribute the questionnaires and collect the results. However, interview surveys may also be conducted when such request is made by an expert of rural communities.
• Many dataset related agriculture and rural area are created by Ministries (MAFF, MIC, METI, MLIT)
• Un unified small area estimation by survey (Such as Rural community, Basic unit block, Area mesh)
• Agricultural Census has index of rural community

• Rural community (MAFF)
• Refers to a rural society within the municipal area based on agriculture. Rural community is a fundamental unit of social life that formed various groups and social relationships, which originally was a spontaneously established local community with ties in the territorial and blood connections.

• Basic unit block (Population Census)
• BUBs are statistical blocks delineated by clear and stable geographic characteristics and landmarks such as roads, railways, rivers, etc. to establish smallest permanent geographic units.
• One BUB comprises around 20-30 households generally (but not necessarily).

(Population Census, Economic Census)
• To compile Grid Square Statistics, the whole area of Japan is divided into square areas based on longitudinal lines drawn at every 1/80 degree and latitudinal lines drawn at every 1/120 degree. The areas thus defined are nearly equal to 1 square kilometer in the range of latitudes where Japan is located. This grid square is called the Basic Grid Square.
