For this project, I wanted to design a shelter that was less site-specific and bulky, and more modular and airy. Separating each post allows for pedestrian traffic on a busy street corner to go undisturbed. Instead of just being something that you walk around, this shelter is some-thing that you can walk through and experience. The steps allow for maximum amounts of seating while taking up as little space as possi-ble, while the thick vines simulta-neously bring a bit of nature back into the city and provide shelter.

My design for this performance space was based around con-trolled circulation. Panels are used throughout the space to direct your eye towards the main space. For example, when one looks at them from the sidewalk, they appear to be a solid mass directing your eye towards the performance area; while looking at them from inside the park, they appear very thin and reveal private spaces within the site. This idea is used throughout the park, and is especially useful around the stage as these panels block everything off behind the per-former, though looking at the stage from the street is not a problem, as they hardly appear to be there.

16Sketch Models of Light in Ramp

Sketch of Sanctuary Sp

For my urban sanctuary, I wanted to emphasize the journey to the sanctuary itself through the use of a ramp system. The journey up rep-resents life while the sanctuary rep-resents Heaven. “Slots” were cut out around the exterior of the ramp and have different jobs: the skinni-est are there to solely allow light in while the biggest ones frame a cer-tain part of your surroundings that I want you to pause and look at.
