BILL DORENKOTTHEAD SWIMMING COACH7TH SEASONCLEVELAND STATE ‘91
Ohio State women’s swimming is a program on the rise, under the steady and patient leadership of seventh-year coach Bill Dorenkott. Since his arrival in 2008, the Buckeyes are well on their way to achieving his vision as a consistent contender vying for Big Ten Conference titles, racing for NCAA crowns, and sending its athletes to the Olympic Games and World Championships.
In Dorenkott’s first season as Ohio State’s head coach (2009), he took a team that had not finished in the Top 5 at the Big Ten championships in more than a decade and managed an eighth-place finish. The squad’s performance provided a foundation for the future of Ohio State women’s swimming, representing an important step in the evolution of the program.
In 2010, the Buckeyes held off two other programs to finish in fifth-place at the Big Ten championships. The Top 5 effort represents the highest finish for the team in 13 years (since the 1997 team finished fifth). The 399 points was the most scored by Ohio State in 16 years. In 2011 and 2012, the progression of the program only continued as the Scarlet and Gray concluded each season in the Top 3 of the conference standings.
Ohio State maintained its five-year run of Top 5 Big Ten finishes with a fourth-place effort in 2014. At the meet, Ashley Vance, a junior at the time, captured a Big Ten title in the 200 individual medley with a school-record time of 1:56.91.
A proven winner who inspires that excellence in his swimmers, Dorenkott placed three Big Ten championships - 2002, 2005 and 2006 - on his resume during a 10-year stint as Penn State’s women’s coach; the Nittany Lions never finished lower than fourth at the women’s Big Ten cham-pionships during the Dorenkott decade (prior to his arrival, they had never finished higher than fourth). His Nittany Lion teams also finished in the Top 20 at the NCAA champi-onships in three of his last five years in State College.
Dorenkott has coached 28 different student-athletes to 34 Big Ten individual championships, including 19 women to 31 Big Ten titles. During his final season of three coaching the Penn State men, he guided Pat Schirk to an NCAA championship in the men’s 200 backstroke. A total of 57 of his PSU swimmers qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, and his student-athletes set 10 Big Ten records and four Big Ten championship records.
Just as in the pool, Dorenkott’s athletes experience success in the classroom. Two of his Penn State swimmers earned the prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship. He has had a total of 246 academic All-Big Ten honorees and 48 College Swimming Coaches Association Scholar (CSCAA) All-Americans. His teams have been honored with a CSCAA Team Academic award 14 times, most recently in 2014.
Dorenkott recruits student-athletes who have vision and goals beyond just being a swimmer. In fact, he recruits on the philosophy that swimming is going to be the fourth-most important priority for his student athletes. He believes if his athletes take care of the first three priorities: 1) Be a great person; 2) Remember who you are, where you came from and understand that family is important; and 3) You are at Ohio State to get an education, and your degree will open doors for you a long time after you leave Ohio State.
Dorenkott has coached on four continents, and his student-athletes have competed in the Olympic Games, PanAm Games, World University Games, World Cham-pionships, Pan-Pacific Championships, U.S. National Championships and on the U.S. International circuit. He has been a member of the United States Swimming National Team coaching staff since 2001. He served on the U.S. National Team coaching staff during the 2001 World University Games, the 2003 PanAm Games and the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix.
An outstanding competitor as a student-athlete at Cleveland State, Dorenkott became a 15-time conference champion, setting a school record in the process. He was a varsity record holder and a U.S. National qualifier and scorer. In 1990, he earned the team MVP award and then served as a team captain in 1991. Dorenkott received two degrees while attending Cleveland State, earning bache-lor’s degrees in both communications and psychology.
He was named a graduate assistant coach of the men’s and women’s swim team at Ashland University in 1991 immediately following graduation and was named head coach of both teams after just two seasons. In his first sea-son at Ashland, he led the women’s team to a conference championship, and led the men to a fourth place showing. He turned the men’s team around the next season as they
joined the women’s team as conference champions as the women repeated. In his two seasons as the Eagles’ mentor, the program produced 16 All-Americans in 49 events. Five Ashland swimmers were named Academic All-Americans in 1995, and 33 records were set under Dorenkott’s tute-lage. His 1995 men’s team finished sixth at NCAAs after a 9-2 dual meet season, and the women placed 11th. While at Ashland, Dorenkott was the 1993-94 and 1994-95 Penn-Ohio Conference Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year and the 1994-95 Penn-Ohio Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year. He served as the meet director of the 1994-95 Men’s and Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. He also served as the head coach of Ashland’s women’s tennis team from 1991-93.
A native of Westlake, Ohio, Dorenkott and his wife Adrianne (who like Bill, swam at Cleveland State) have four children - Jack, Matt, Ann and Will.

JUSTIN SOCHORHEAD DIVING COACHSECOND SEASON
Justin Sochor was named head coach of the Ohio State diving team, TJ Shelton, associ-ate athletics director for sports administration, announced Wednesday. Sochor, a native of Worthington, Ohio, becomes just the fourth coach in the program’s 82-year history.
“I am confident that Justin has what it takes to lead our very successful diving program both in the classroom and in the diving well,” Shelton said. “During the interview process, Justin articulated a vision that would focus on the overall development of the student-athlete. We are excited to have Justin join our coaching staff at Ohio State.”
Sochor, who was head coach for Team USA at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, is no stranger to the remarkable Buckeye diving program.
The 2010 USA Diving Junior National Coach of the Year, Sochor transitioned from a three-year stint at the helm of the U.S. Elite Diving Academy to the program manager and head coach of the Ohio State Diving Club in 2010. Sochor, who was a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes from 2007-10, worked closely with former 35-year Ohio State diving head coach Vince Panzano and considers his predecessor as his coaching mentor.
“Mike Peppe, Ron O’Brien and Vince Panzano. For more than 80 years, these three men have created the finest diving community for student-athletes to achieve their highest level of success personally, competitively and academically,” Sochor said. “These coaches have inspired me to continue the tradition of excellence at this great university. I am truly honored and humbled to step forward as the fourth head diving coach of the Buckeyes.”
Most recently, Sochor led the Ohio State Diving Club to back-to-back overall national titles at the 2013 USA Diving Junior National Championships Aug. 10 in Minneapolis, Minn. The OSU boys club also claimed a national championship.
In 2012, Sochor left his position with the club team to take full leadership as interim diving coach for the Scarlet and Gray during the Women’s Big Ten Championships. With his guid-ance, the Buckeyes swept the diving events as former OSU diver Bianca Alvarez dominated the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events with scores of 360.65 and 410.65, respectively, while current OSU diver Cheyenne Cousineau completed the sweep with a winning score of 326.10 on the 10-meter platform. In 2010, he also guided the Ohio State men’s squad to its first Big Ten championship in 54 years.
Sochor has coached the Buckeyes to multiple NCAA All-American performances, including first and second place finishes at the 2008 NCAA National Championships on the women’s 3-meter event when Chelsea Davis and Alvarez earned the Top 2 spots, respectively.
As a coach at the junior and national team levels, Sochor has collected 78 individual national medals, including 22 golds, 25 silvers and 21 bronzes. Below are some recent successes guided by Sochor:
• 2012 Puerto Rico Grand Prix - three bronze medals - men’s 10-meter synchro, women’s 10-meter and women’s 10-meter synchro
• 2012 Junior World Championships - bronze medal, men’s 10-meter• 2011 Junior Pan American Games - bronze medal women’s 10-meter• 2010 Junior World Championship - bronze medal, women’s 10-meter• Sochor has passion, dedication, innovation and knowledge of diving that is clear to
all who meet him. He has been named head coach for many different national team competitions and is known for leading his divers to national and international success.
A former varsity diver and Cleveland State University graduate with a degree in psychology, Sochor founded American Flyers Diving, Inc. in 1996. He developed his club into one of the largest diving clubs in the Midwest, bringing nearly 100 new divers into the sport each year. As a Viking, Sochor was a four-time collegiate conference champion and was named the 1995 Athlete of the Year. From 1992-1997, Sochor was a professional high diver/entertainer at Sea World.
Sochor lives in Powell, Ohio with his wife, Katie, son, Mason and daughter, Sydney.

JORDAN WOLFRUMASSISTANT COACHFIRST SEASONST. CLOUD STATE ‘09
Jordan Wolfrum is in her first year as an assistant coach with the Buckeyes. She comes to Ohio State with an extensive coaching background, including serving last season as a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford University. Wolfrum worked extensively with the breaststrokers, including junior Katie Olsen, who finished second in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Cham-pionships, and sophomore Sara Haase, who finished 10th in the 100. As a team, the Cardinal finished as the national runner-up, broke numerous school records and set the American/US Open and NCAA record in the 400 medley relay.
“I am so looking forward to joining the Buckeye family,” said Wolfrum. “I have immense respect for Coach Dorenkott as a coach and as a team leader. I am very excited join him and to bring my passion and excitement to the pool deck. I believe that together we can lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship and NCAA honors.”
“Jordan is joining our program at an important point in our evolution,” said Doren-kott. “Our team dynamic has never been stronger. We are poised for a big future and are looking forward to Jordan’s enthusiasm serving as a catalyst to future successes.”
Prior to Stanford, Wolfrum was the head swimming and diving coach at the Col-lege of Saint Benedict in Collegeville, Minn. She spent a total of four years at Saint Benedict’s, taking over as head coach in 2012-13 after serving for three years as an assistant coach.
She helped the Blazers to a fourth place finish at the 2012 MIAC Championships, narrowly missing a top-three tally. In her time at Saint Benedict, she has coached 11 All-MIAC Athletes, including a team record eight in 2012-13.
She has also spent the last five years on the staff of the Stanford University Swim Camp, working with elite level athletes. Wolfrum is a member of the College Swim Coaches Association of America and the United States Swimming Association.
“We were drawn to Jordan based on her human qualities,” said Dorenkott. “She has a professional demeanor yet connected easily with our team. And, Jordan did not blink when we shared the high expectations that go along with being a part of The Ohio State University.”
She competed collegiately at St. Cloud State, captaining the Huskies her final two seasons, and helping them to a Northern Sun Swimming Championship in her senior year. Also a member of the great North Central Conference (NCC), Wolfrum was a member NCC Commissioners Academic Honor Roll during her career.
She graduated in 2009 from St. Cloud State with a degree in mathematics with a minor in statistics.
