Ash Wednesday–The marking of the ashes on Ash

Wednesday is a practice that dates back to at least the tenth century. The Christian Church adopted this rite to reflect the strong biblical emphasis on penitence. Early believers sometimes wore coarse sackcloth and sprinkled ashes upon their heads to express a sense of mourning or penitence (see Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21). In our day the mark of an ashen cross on the forehead serves as a reminder of a most basic truth—We die! We are reminded forcefully of the words of the committal in the burial service, “...earth the earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” One day, those words will be said over us. It also brings close to home our own baptism, when we received the same sign of a cross on our forehead. Ashes suggest cleansing and renewal. They were once used as a cleansing agent in the absence of soap, and on Ash Wednesday the ashes have sometimes been understood as a penitential substitute for water as a sign of Baptism. Water both stifles and refreshes, drowns and makes alive; so the ashes also tell of both death and renewal.

Los primeros creyentes se espolvorearon de ceniza sobre sus cabezas para expresar un sentimiento de pesadumbre o penitencia (ve ase Jona s 3:6, Matthew 11:21). Hoy en dí a, la marca de la cruz de ceniza en la frente sirve como un recordatorio de una verdad ma s ba sica – ¡Moriremos! Se nos recuerda con fuerza las palabras de entierro en el servicio funerario, “.... tierra a tierra, ceniza a ceniza, polvo a polvo." Un dí a, esas palabras se les dira en nuestro enterramiento. Pero tambie n, esa marca nos recuerda de nuestro bautismo, cuando recibimos el mismo signo de la Cruz en nuestra frente. Las cenizas indican limpieza y renovacio n. THE EXHORTATION Brothers and sisters: God created us to experience joy in communion with him, to love all humanity, and to live in harmony with all of his creation. But sin separates us from God, our neighbors, and creation, and so we do not enjoy the life our Creator intended for us. Also, by our sin we grieve our Father, who does not desire us to come under his judgment, but to turn to him and live. As disciples of the Lord Jesus we are called to struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor. Repentance, fasting, prayer, and works of love—the discipline of Lent—help us to wage our spiritual warfare. I invited you, therefore, to commit yourselves to this struggle and confess your sins, asking our Father for strength to persevere in your Lenten discipline.

THE IMPOSTION OF ASHES As we sing, those who wish to come forward and gather around the altar are invited to do so under the direction of the ushers to receive the ashes as a sign of repentance, in the sure and certain hope of the forgiveness of our sins, which is ours through Jesus Christ. Ministers mark the forehead of each person with a cross of ashes saying: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
