They again showed improved tightness and heart. They’ll likely have a few ABs back for this but will need to eliminate the midfield errors…that’s where NH can be dangerous. The latter couldn’t get properly clear of Counties but stuck at it with 14 men from 22 minutes. If they gain traction wide they’ll get close. Round 10 - 7:35pm Friday October 2, Pukekohe - Sky Sport 2 Again Counties played above their rating. They pounce on their chances and stuck with NH until the 2 late tries did for them. That said, Slade, Whitelock, Ellis and co will likely be joined by a few ABs here. Maybe not the big guns for this but the poise and thought behind Canterbury’s consistency should be way to much. Brett is growing by the week and they look far superior to all comers. Round 10 - 7:35pm Friday October 2, Rotorua - Sky Sport 1 (Replayed 9:30pm Sky Sport 2) Although they led early BOP were pressured into error at their strengths, offloading and through the line by Otago. They’ll need to reduce those, the ‘Bay’ are good out there. Although back footed by Manawatu at times, with Waldrom, Lowe, Berquist, and Guilford all in form they’ll bring a maul, resilience at the breakdown and pace. If they continue the teamwork build they can tip the home ad. Round 10 - 2:35pm Saturday October 3, Auckland - Sky Sport 1 Touch and go last year, its now a must win for Auckland. They were outplayed by traditional rugby in Nelson. If they have plans they don’t implement them. They’ll be beefed by some ABs here but all they seem to have is counter attack. It might be enough. Southland are struggling to bring their home game, particularly the defence, to the road. If they do, off a 9 day break, they can go close. Round 10 - 5:30pm Saturday October 3, Wellington - Sky Sport 1 Wellington revealed some tactical nous with 5/8 Kirkpatrick controlling the kicking attack in difficult conditions and getting one over Robinson v Southland. In the end they had too much out wide. Although unlikely to have all their ABs back for this, they might be able to build from here. Manawatu pushed the ‘Bay’. Although the streak is 0-5, they dig as a team led by no 8 Thompson. Round 10 - 7:35pm Saturday October 3, New Plymouth - Sky Sport 1 Both still have the faintest of chances for the 4. Taranaki lack confidence out wide but keep driving up front. If they tighten the lineout they might just win. But there was plenty to like about Otago’s win over BOP. There belief and teamwork looked lifted by Donnelly’s presence. They’re the better team bringing plenty of options behind the Romans/Dickson combo. Its a matter of taking that game north. Round 10 - 2:35pm Sunday October 4, Whangarei - Sky Sport 1 Northland can’t make it but Tasman are focussed on the 4. They did Auckland by thinking rugby. That’s not that hard, but they’re tight and aggressive in front, build phases and can spread it. Even so, it wont be easy in Whangarei. The ‘Taniwha’ stayed with Canterbury last week creating turnovers and attacking with initiative via McKentry again and Munro. They just lack a little class. Round 26 - 9:35pm Friday September 4, WIN St - Sky Sport 2

Real aggression was put on theDragons by Souths as applied by theRaiders earlier. They couldn’twithstand it. Their field position fellapart and bumbling errors sent themto 0-3 the last 3. By contrast the Eelsand Hayne are the momentum of thecomp, controlling territory and bringinginventive. The ratings say theDragons, its hard to see.

Round 26 - 9:35pm Friday September 4, SCG - Sky Sport 3 (replay 11.30pm Sky Sport 2)

The re-shuffled Dogs coasted over theWarriors in El Mazri’s home finale butat the huge cost of Kimmorley possiblyfor a few weeks. Its hard to imaginethem without him. The Tigers missedthe 8, the Titans away being too bigan ask after their terrific run. Youwouldn’t be surprised to see themthrow it everywhere now. If it comesoff they’ll win it.

Round 26 - 7:30pm Saturday September 5, Mt Smart St - Sky Sport 2

With Inglis back, Storm outclassed theRoosters 7 tries to 1. You wouldn’tguage them on that but they’d win ifthey bring their main men to Auckland. The Warriors will try to give theirtolerant followers a final win. Itsunlikely. They failed v the makeshiftDogs. That their main play, a bomb tothe corner, resulted in a 70m runaway, sums it up.

Round 26 - 9:30pm Saturday September 5, Brookvale Oval - Sky Sport 2

Manly put up an indifferent showing vthe Sharks down to 12. They snatcheda win late but left doubts. Theconsistent Titans will be hard toovercome. They’re refined atcountering from errors and theirdefence was play off material v Wests.Still, they’re safely in the 4, don’t needthis, and won’t be that interested intripping to Brookvale.

Round 26 - 9:30pm Saturday September 5, Toyota St -Sky Sport 3 (replay 11.30pm Sky Sport 2)

The Sharks showed heart and had thebest of the game v Manly.Notwithstanding Stuart’s post match‘Ricky-mode’ they were unlucky. Theyremain 0 from the last 9 and need thisto be sure of avoiding the spoon. Itwont be easy. With Sandow veryactive Souths hammered the Dragonsby a physical defence and plenty ofwidth.

Round 26 - 3:30pm Sunday September 6, SFS - Sky Sport 3

The chooks are the only one withanything to play for in this, they mightpass the spoon. They’re 13-2 the last15 and in general too young, toosmall, lacking pattern and pace. Ifthey’re not short on hope, theCowboys might not front. If they dothey’ll probably fling it around at theSFS for one last hurrah.

Round 26 - 5:00pm Sunday September 6, Energy Australia St - Sky Sport 2

This decides the final top 8 spot. TheKnights brought errors andinfringements to Canberra illustratinghow difficult it is to win down therewhen the Raiders are on. They’ll missZeb Taia and Sydney may advantagethe Panthers. Still, its unlikely the lattercan turn it. They didn’t respect theirmeagre possession v the Eels, andneed to shore up out back.

Round 26 - 9:00pm Sunday September 6, Suncorp St - Sky Sport 2

The Broncos ended the Cowboys top8 claims and secured their own in ahigh quality match. They’re back closeto their April form and might becontenders after all. It’s hard to seethe Raiders bringing last week’s form vthe Dragons to Suncorp. Still, Furner’sstyle and their aggressive speed, width and youth scream next year.

The ‘glitz’ team, GC is feeling pressure andBleiberg’s comments aren’t the fix. He’srelentless. This time the ref had ‘no feeling forthe game’ as GC took a first home loss, 2-3to Victory, after playing with 10 for 50minutes. Phoenix drew again, their season5th. They’re ‘rating’ well, the GK., Paston, issafe, and Paul Ifill and Bertos are gettingclose. They need some luck.

Victory feel more stable with Muscat back. Hegot a 2nd shot at a penalty which got themup over GC and freed the Bleiberg tongueagain. Hernandez showed he’s special andvia their classy middle Victory createchances. Roar overcame injuries and playerloss (reps) to get a season 3rd win v Sydney.Still, they failed to finish often and you’d thinkthe home ad will pay here.

Glory are now 4 from the last 6, two away, after last week’s win over the Jets via apenalty. They didn’t ever really get control butback home, Jelic and Sterjovski will behungry, and you’d rate them to get another.Fury are better than the table bottom. Theylost their 1st in 5 outings last week v theReds. They failed to finish plenty ofpossession, McBreen in particular at fault.

CCM’s quality defence and Sydney’s raggedrecent play make this hard to call. TheMariners were unlucky at times v Phoenix buttheir rear and GK Vukovic assured a draw inWellington. Still without Aloisi (who’d knowwhat’s going on), Sydney were poor in front vthe Jets, with the previous week’s saviourMark Bridge having a shocker. Clint Bolton isalso strong in goal but if CCM finish they’ve ashot.

The ‘Reds’ got the luck last week v Fury andyou’d expect it to run at Hindmarsh St. Theyfound their defence in company with qualityGK Gatekovic, while Pantelis and Leckie tookrare chances. Despite coach Culina’s recentravings the facts are the Jets strikers couldn’thit a barn door right now. It was more of thesame v Glory who hardly intimidated. If theycan’t lift, it’ll be similar here.

Course and TournamentAtunyote, Indian for Eagle, is a parklandsetting, rolling hills and water, one lakebeing 13 acres running along threefairways to a dramatic finishing hole.

It’s a luxurious resort hosting its ownPGA Tour Championship for the thirdtime. The past winners are DustinJohnson and Steve Flesch. The Tour2009 winners lining up are; DustinJohnson, Rory Sabbatini, Bo Van Pelt, and Mark Wilson.

Top 5 Rated and BoltersBrandt Snedeker finished 10th in theBMW at his last start and is 23% top 10.He’s actually managed two top 10s and a12th his last 4. If you put those alongsidehis earlier 5th to Woods at Congressionaland 2nd to Stricker in the John Deerehe’d be a huge chance here, despite themissed cuts in between.

Steve Marino ended up 7th at the TourChampionship last week, 7 off Mickleson. That looks useful in this field and givenhis 2nd at the Colonial earlier in the yearhe rates highly. He’s one of the tour’smore unorthodox and a feel player.

Michael Letzig rates 3rd here after twotop 10s his last 5. He’s ranked high onthe birdie count through the year.

Jeff Overton wasn’t far from Stricker inthe Deutsche Bank before blowing out inthe BMW. Earlier he ran a mighty 13th inthe British Open, 4 off Cink. He’s longand low on putts per round. He’s also gotcourse form running 10th last year whichincluded a 67.

Dustin Johnson wound up at the backof the Tour Championship last week butthat was the world elite. Previously hewas 4th in the Deutsche Bank 2 offStricker and is 39% top 20. He’s a younggun who hits it big and rates highly bylong distance approaches. Moreimportantly he’s won twice on the Tour, once this year, and his win last year wasthis.

Matt Kuchar has been thereabouts inbetter fields lately; 10th in the BMW and15th in the Deutsche Bank. Earlier in theyear he managed 5th in the Memorial, shooting the day two lowest at 67, andrates well.

Mark Wilson ’s form the last two is verysimilar to Kuchar’s and interestingly hisyear’s best was also at the Memorialwhere he went 8 under for third.

Davis Love 111’s season has been longsince his splendid 27th, 6 from thewinner, at Turnberry. But he’s makingcuts and can still drill it. In this type offield, given he tied 3rd last year, youwouldn’t leave him out.

Ryan Moore is 17% top 10, not badamong this field. He was 30th in theBMW last start and won at Sedgefieldlate August. He’s capable of going lowand his tie for 25th in this last yearincluded a pair of 69s.

John Senden’s 10th in the TourChampionship last week reads pretty wellfor this. He’s shown signs of cracking onethis year with several late chargesincluding 2nd in the Buick 3 behind Tigerand earlier being tied for 2nd at Turnberrywith a first round 66 before an 80 senthim home. He’s 21% top 10 and knowsthe course running 27th last year.

Course and Tournament

The Barclays started life as theWestchester Classic before becoming theBuick with the Barclays name firstappearing in 2005. It has never beenplayed at Liberty which opened in 2006,then the most expensive course built inthe US. Its has not hosted achampionship and so there is no relevantcourse form.

It’s a picturesque links type, US style. Nopot bunkers, occasional wind, but reportedly lengthydeep rough of aheather nature. Some suggest similar to Whistling Straits, venue of the 2004 PGA won by Vijay Singh.

Top 5 Rated and Bolters

Tiger Woods will be fired up for this afterbeing outplayed Sunday at the PGA byYang. Interestingly Harrington had thebetter of him Sunday too at Firestoneuntil his 8 at 16. Tiger is an incredible 5from 12 this year, 11 top tens, 3 winsfrom his last 5. The win at Firestone washis 7th there and earlier he’d strolledWarwick Hills after lying 94th post roundone and coasted the Congressional

Steve Stricker got handy but a fewerrors and suddenly he was cut at thePGA. He’s so comfortably top 5 in theworld by the ‘ASAP Ratings’ this yearhe’ll likely end up at the pointy end here.Tiger aside, the most consistent USgolfer is Stricker. He’s 47% top ten, bombed them in the John Deere lastmonth and has won twice this year.

Hunter Mahan poked up before finishing9 off Yang in the PGA. He was flyingbefore then, 4 top tens the past 6, theother being the missed cut at Turnberry. He’s got length, is scrambling well and at55% top 20 off 22 runs is the most likelyto get one of those that haven’t this year.

Zach Johnson is another super USgolfer as his Masters win demonstrated. In fact he’s won 3 this year, is 54% top20, and is straight which will help if theonly thing to fear here is the rough. Hewon this in ’07.

Jim Furyk is still seeking the win. UntilFirestone he’d been right in almosteverything of note this year; 34th atTurnberry after being well up, 33rd in theUS Open, 2nd in the Memorial, 9th atColonial and 5th in The Players. That hewas 18 shots from Yang in the PGA, 18from Tiger at Firestone, and 9 off in theBuick at his last 3 is concerning.Nevertheless, he’s 42% top 10 which isholding him up in the ratings and hasbeen runner-up in this twice.

Woody Austin has been in prettyreasonable form lately, two top 10s thelast 6 including the Colonial. He was 13off Yang at the PGA after gettingprominent and wont be out of this.

Tim Clark remains on the waiting list inthe US. He only went down in the playoff at the Colonial and continues to playwell, 16th in the PGA, 29th at Firestoneand 42% top 20. He’s often good for onepoor round. He was right in the PGA untila Sunday collapse. He’s not long butdoesn’t miss fairways.

Ernie Eels has declared he’s determinedto get amongst it again and he’s beencloser and closer the past few months. His 6th in the PGA followed 29th atFirestone. He’s 35% top 10 and wasrunner-up in this in the mid-90s.

Stephen Ames hasn’t had a huge yearbut is 30% top 10 and his 24th at thePGA, 11 off Yang, showed he’s not faroff. He’ a proven competitor in toughfields, 10th in the US Open this year andis the ’06 Players champion. He’s gotbetter than average length, finds fairwaysand greens and has a high class shortgame.

The BARCLAYS Liberty National, Jersey City, New JerseyFriday July 28th 7am SS1, Saturday 7am SS1, Sunday 7am SS1, Monday 6am SS1 Latest 12 months form

This rating is based on the scoring mechanism of the sport. Factors which go towards the rating include points differential and home/away percentages. The Graph: The graph tracks the trend of the ratings between the displayed dates and predicts the future margin before the addition of home advantage points for today’s game. Key: The form column indicates the last 6 matches. The home team is listed first. The ‘Value odds’ column indicates the odds required to gain value according to the ‘ASAP Ratings’. Course and TournamentEast Lake has hosted The TourChampionship since 2004. Its the homeof Bobby Jones and is a par 70. Somelength has been added since last yearand the greens have been changed toMiniverde Bermuda grass to counteractthe hot summers.

The Tour Championship is an elite pointsselected field of 30 from the previousweeks of Fed Ex Cup tournaments. These 30 divide US $7.5 million, the winner hauling$1.35 million so there’s plenty of pressure in such asmall field. Winnersat East Lake andplaying here areTiger Woods, Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson.

Top 5 Rated and BoltersTiger Woods is ferocious right now. Hewon the last Fed Ex Cup round, TheBMW by 8 shots. Although he hadSunday issues a few weeks back, he’ssimply flying; 6 from 15 this year with aphenomenal 13 top tens at 87%. Again, the course changes here should suit himmore than others. He’s won this twice, once at East Lake, and been runner-up 3times, all at East Lake.

Steve Stricker won the Deutsche Banktwo starts back, his 3rd this year. Hisformline is very solid; 1060210, and he’sthe second best golfer in the world rightnow. He made this field last year, is 50%top 10, and will be looking to cement theyear by bagging the money.

Hunter Mahan hasn't been quite therethe past few weeks, 30th in the BMW,36th in the Deutsche Bank, but his ratingis holding up. Up until his last couple hehad 4 top tens late June through August. He’s got the length, can scramble, is50% top 20, and tied 17th last year. He’sdue a win.

Jim Furyk remains winless but in greatform. Runner-up to Tiger last week, 4from the winner the week before and 6from the winner the week before thatsuggests he doesn’t need much more.Earlier he was in everything of note; 34that Turnberry after being well up, 33rd inthe US Open, 2nd in the Memorial, 9th atColonial and 5th in The Players. He wasrunner-up here in ’06, tied 6th last yearand obviously has a great shot.

Dustin Johnson managed 4th in theDeutsche Bank 2 off Stricker moving himto 5th on the ‘Ratings’. He was 30th lastweek and is 41% top 20. He’s a younggun with a huge career in front. He’s got2 tour wins, one this year. He hits it bigand also rates highly by long distanceapproaches.

Zach Johnson this year’s Masterswinner had been a little off the past twomonths but came back with 5th , albeit11 from Tiger in the BMW. He was only 7off the winner the previous week, haswon twice this year, is 56% top 20 and isstraight. That he holds the course recordat 60 makes him a real chance.

Retief Goosen found a new edgetowards the middle of this year. He’sbeen thereabouts the last few, and wasonly 2 off Czink at Turnberry in the Open.He won this here in ’04.

Padraig Harrington seems past his teeand green struggles of earlier in the yearand is red hot with 4 top 10s his last five.He had Tiger Sunday at Firestone untilhis 8 at 16. He’s the type to enjoy thepressure here.

Jerry Kelly has poked up with a coupleof top 10s the past two months. Althoughhe hasn’t made this field for a while, hewas 3rd here in ’02 and 4th in ’04. Hewas known to be keen to get in this fieldand sunk a ten foot putt at the last in theBMW to make it. His tour win this year
