Shana Tova! What a year 2020 has been! With everything going on in the world right now, we could all use a little time to reflect and to clear our heads and hearts and prepare ourselves for the Yamim Noraim which are around the corner.

We are now faced with the huge task of creating a meaningful experience for the High Holidays from the comfort of our own home.

The High Holiday Task Force has been hard at work creating a plethora of events and service experiences for you to get the most out of the High Holiday season.

So, practically, how do you create a meaningful High Holiday experience in front of the screen? Here are a few suggestions that I urge you to try. Dress up! Yes, we all enjoy staying in our comfortable sweatpants 24/7, and online retailers

report that they are selling a lot of business shirts but very few pants… Tempting as it may be, staying in ‘home clothes’ is not a great way of creating a festive experience. Dress for online services the same way you would if they were in person. You will feel completely different.

Create a Sacred Space! Do not be tempted to participate in the service from your office, or from your kitchen. Set up your laptop or your tablet in a nice, comfortable area in your home, or use your living room television. Face East if at all possible. Put on a nice, white tablecloth with candle sticks, a kiddush cup, and a shofar if you have one. Get some pomegranates, apples and honey, and place them in a visible spot. Your environment matters.

Minimize Distractions! If using your computer, close all your browser tabs. Emails and social media can wait. Change your phone setting to “do not disturb.” We are used to being available 24/7, but trust me, the world will continue to turn if you allow yourself to be 100% present for a couple of hours. You are not missing out on that much!

Use your Books! We will be distributing our High Holiday machzors to the entire community. Listening to the prayers may be nice, but that does not replace the experience of praying from a book and following along. Allow yourself to read beyond the particular spot we are in – whatever page you are on is the place you need to be!

Sing! You may be muted, and maybe nobody else can hear you, but this does not mean you cannot sing out loud. Remember that third grade chorus teacher that told you to move your lips and make no sound? Now is your chance to sing as loud as you want without any fear of judgement.

No, none of these suggestions will make the High Holidays feel normal. There is nothing normal about this year. But normal is not always what we need. Perhaps being forcefully removed from our comfort zone is just what we need at this particular time. In any case, why not?

I hope to see you virtually and in person during our various socially distant community gathering times in the parking lot or at the Duck Pond!

Tradition! Sing it out in your best “Tevye” voice. Who calls the pages when there is a reading, leads us all in Yizkor, tells us when to stand? And, who gives the sermon lasting half an hour, not quite following the plan? THE RABBI___________ The Rabbi______ TRADITION! Who leads the service davening so sweetly, singing all the prayers to melodies we love? And, who has to step in at a moment’s notice, when a Torah reader doesn’t show? THE HAZZAN___________ The Hazzan______ TRADITION!

What is more steeped in tradition than Jewish ritual, whether it be serv-ices in the synagogue or holiday meals with family? And, although all the holidays have their unique traditions, the High Holidays stand out among them. After all, we’re talking Unetaneh Tokef, Days of Awe, “Book of Life”, etc. Why mess with a good thing?

Well, the truth is that Jewish ritual and observance have always been evolving to some degree, and as families grow and change, some of our traditions evolve as well to accommodate our changing circumstances. I believe that one of the greatest sources of our strength lies in our ability

to adapt to new environments and needs. I’m sure we all could list many practices we follow now that are quite different from those of only one generation ago.

Nobody asked for a worldwide disruption that has interfered with almost everyone’s way of life. We have been forced to adapt, and for the most part, we have done an excellent job of doing so. Certainly we hope to “get back to normal” as soon as possible, yet we have learned some new ways of doing things that just might be beneficial to continue.

I sincerely hope that we are able to embrace the spirit of the holidays, even if many of the practices that we are used to following will not be possible this year. We’re trying to produce an experience that everyone will find fulfilling and meaningful; a tremendous amount of work is being done to accomplish that. Our challenge as individuals is to focus on the positive, take advantage of all the opportunities available, and to proudly celebrate in the best way we know how in this year’s unique and unusual circumstances.

May your holidays be filled with joy and good health. Shana tova!

HERJC Mission Statement Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre – Congregation Etz Chaim (HERJC) is a warm, vibrant, traditional-egalitarian Conservative congregation. Our diverse, forward-thinking community is one in which learning, prayer and social action flourish.

Since its founding in 1949, HERJC has been recognized for creating a welcoming environ-ment in which each member— Regardless of age, stage of life or background—feels a connection to one another, to the Jewish people, to the United States, to the land and State of Israel, to Judaism, and to God.

We are committed to contin-uing to provide innovative, inter-esting and thought-provoking programs that:

 Foster lifelong learning

from pre-school through adulthood

 Celebrate our Jewish heritage

Deepen the sense of community among our Congregational family

Promote religious involvement of all members, and enhance their spiritual experience

 Encourage intergenerational cooperation

Nurture the State of Israel and our relationship with it

Serve the needs of our members, the local community, the United States, and K’lal Yisrael, the Jewish people, throughout the world.

Pirkei Avot says the world rests on Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim. So too does our Congregation.

ETHEL LIEBESKIND

Dear HERJC Family, I hope that your summer was filled with silver linings despite the

challenging times we’re living through. With all the uncertainty in the world, we are still here, about to celebrate another New Year. The Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe, is a period of reflection and introspection, and as I think back on the year that is ending, I appreciate my blessings more than ever. Gratitude, for my family, our health, our friends, Zoom, the

technology which enables us to be close though socially distant, is what’s getting me through.

Rabbi Ellen S. Wolintz-Fields, the Executive Director of the Women’s League for Con-servative Judaism, wrote a beautiful Shabbat message last month that stayed with me. She wrote about two sayings that sound similar but have different meaning: Gam Zeh Ya’avor, this too shall pass, and Gam Zeh L’tovah, This is also for the good.

Gam Zeh Ya’avor, this too shall pass, is a phrase that appears in Persian Sufi literature, and has a Jewish version attributed to King Solomon. As the HERJC team works so hard to prepare for the High Holidays, and for the opening of Nursery and Religious School, there are moments when we each feel overwhelmed. There are so many unknowns, and we’re trying to take one day at a time, but staying positive isn’t always easy. The expression, Gam Zeh Ya’avor, is always playing in the back of my mind.

We all long for the time when life as we knew it will begin to return… When we’ll be able to hug again, pop into the supermarket without giving it a second thought, and not have to run home to grab a mask (I now keep a supply in my glove compartment)… This too will pass!

But in the meantime, the second phrase, Gam Zeh L’tovah, this is also for the good, is very compelling. At HERJC, the way the team has come together, and boosts each other up when someone is feeling down, is very special. The way congregants, staff and clergy have joined forces to reimagine the High Holidays and create a beautiful experience for our HERJC family, is truly wonderful. And when my two and a half year old grandson, who I now see mainly on my ipad screen called me early one morning and said “Nana, are you available to do Caribu? (an app that enables you to read and do activities together);” my heart was full! Gam zehL’tovah!!!

So for 5781, let us remember that Gam Zeh Ya’avor and have the perspective to say Gam zeh L’tovah!

Wishing you a sweet, happy and healthy New Year. ,

From the Executive Director

Sometimes the best thing you can do is not think, not wonder, not imagine, not obsess. Just breathe, and have faith that everything will work out for the best.

L’shanah Tovah 5781 Uncertainty is just about the only thing that’s certain, or so it seems these days. The COVID-19 pandemic uprooted any illusion we might have had about the certainty of things. And yet, as our nation marches forward in search of national healing, there’s certainty to be found in the Talmud.

The Talmud – more a compendium of opinions than a legal code – records the thinking of our sages. Among their varied opinions pre-sented on any particular topic, the Talmud declares the most meritorious of the opinions – only sometimes. At other times, the Talmud presents the arguments, but does not declare a “winner.” What’s certain in the Talmud is that logic is presented in its full artistry. Logic is a certainty. So long as we, as a nation, keep our wits about us, we’ll collectively move toward healing, and ensure the return of certainty and security.

As always at this time of year, we are grateful for our HERJC community and the sustenance it offers. We benefit from the religious, educational, and social programming that HERJC provides. With the introspective period of Elul upon us and the High Holy Days just days away, let’s remain logical and compassionate as we interact – while wearing a mask in person, at a distance, or via Zoom.

To the longstanding Patrons who are due to recommit their membership this year, thank you in advance. Additional thanks to those who will chose to move up to a higher membership level, a testament to their leadership and generosity. We are, of course, grateful to all of our Patrons; their names, together with those who’ve recently renewed and/or increased giving levels, appear below. Thank you all!

Thinking of joining Patrons? Annual giving levels are: Simcha ($1,000), Chai ($1,800), Double Chai ($3,600), and Keter Torah ($5,000). Your charitable contribution ensures the vitality of our synagogue. Please join us! If you’d like to discuss your participation this year, feel free to reach out to me.

In these challenging and uncertain times, this year’s High Holiday program has been reimagined. Not only has it consumed a great deal of time and thoughtful reflection by our clergy and synagogue leaders, invaluable contributions have been made by our High Holiday task force, and our dedicated HERJC staff team.

The culmination of all of these efforts is presented here. The goal has always been to capture as much of the sacred and unique experience of HERJC’s High Holidays as possible, safely and as a community. Looking forward to sharing the upcoming holidays with all of you!

Summary After careful consideration, including the formation of a HERJC congregant task force, examining membership survey results, and consultations with other congregations, we have determined that virtual services are in the best interest of all congregants, families and the community.

Over the last few months we have been working hard to con-struct an engaging High Holiday experience incorporating program-ming and events in a safe forum that combines virtual services and activities with the ability to participate in a series of live events. Seven separate subcommittees have worked diligently to accom-plish this.

Honors All honors have been pre-recorded which enables our virtual serv-ice to include Torah Aliyot, Hagbah & G’lilah, Ark Openings, Torah holders and English readings. Torah Reading Torah and Haftarah readings, leyned from the scroll in the Sanctu-ary, have been pre-recorded and will be integrated into the service.

Divrei Torah Divrei Torah have been assigned and are being prepared by con-gregants. As is the HERJC tradition, there will be one 3-5 minute congregant D’var Torah during each service. A pre-recorded 8-10 minute congregant D’var Torah can be accessed at any point during the afternoons of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, allowing the flexibility of any time access on HERJC’s private YouTube playlist.

BARBARA KAPLAN AND BEVERLY WACHTEL

This year’s theme for Torah Fund and Sisterhood is B’Yachad “together.” While the theme represents our working together to nurture and sustain Jewish life, it is particularly relevant now. We’re all in this together… coping in a world dealing with Covid-19. Although we’re not in the same room for meetings and events, or in the sanctuary for services, HERJC members, Sisterhood, and staff are working together to keep our HERJC family together.

Our Installation ceremony on Zoom, planned and offici-ated by Beverly Wachtel, was held in June, followed by a board meeting. Welcome, new Executive Board Members Heidi Kreit and Nancy Rehns! Sisterhood members are also meeting over Zoom for our bi-monthly Book Club, chaired by Roberta Sugarman. Now, even former members who moved to Florida can participate! In July, members of HERJC Sisterhood joined together with 1,400 women at the virtual convention of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). Our Sisterhood received the distinguished Jewels

in the Crown Award. The annual New Year’s greeting card will be mailed to

HERJC members and staff this month. Adding your name to the card is a great way to say Shana Tova to members of our HERJC family. Thanks to Mati Olin and Barbara Kaplan for designing the card.

Thank you to the women who already joined Sisterhood for the 2020–21 year. Membership in HERJC Sisterhood makes you a member of WLCJ, able to take advantage of programs offered by WLCJ and our BQLI Region. Don’t miss articles from HERJC members: Barbara Kaplan, BQLI Torah Fund VP (about perpetuating Conservative Judaism through giving) and book reviews from Lisa Cohen, Literary Co-Chair, in the weekly BQLI Shabbat Greetings email.

We’re in the process of planning activities to enable social distancing while keeping us together! Membership matters, no matter how much (or how little) you choose to partici-pate. We’re all in this together. We hope you’ll join us!

Featuring live entertainment with James Michael

The Dallas Morning News says “James Michael is a phenomenal baritone with an engaging performance style that mesmerizes audiences with his resonant singing, personal stories and won-derful spirit. Not since Robert Goulet, John Raitt and Howard Keel, all of whom James has worked with, has anyone per-formed our beloved Broadway Classics with equal passion and beautiful voice. His widely and critically acclaimed production ‘The Golden Age of the Baritone’, captures Broadway’s great music in a single show not to be missed!” This event is open to Sisterhood members only! Join Sisterhood and don’t miss this engaging performance!

Torah fund campaign 2020–21

A campaign to ensure our legacy to future generations of Conservative Jews

The Torah Fund theme for 2020–21 is B’Yachad, which means ‘Together.’ Our pride in being Jewish shows in everything we do. We are high achievers in our professional and personal lives, and we accomplish even more together! Since 1942, the modest contributions of thousands of individuals to this grassroots fundraising called Torah Fund have helped to educate and train each generation of rabbis, cantors, scholars, educators, summer camp directors, chaplains, cam-pus Jewish life staff, and committed lay leaders. These are the people who guide and teach, console and uplift our people, one soul at a time, whether in person or remotely, during these challenging times. We make this happen together. Join us!

We want to thank all the congregants who donated to the successful 5780 Torah Fund Campaign. HERJC was credited with submitting $5,000 to the annual campaign.

nursery school CHERYL KARP

For many of us, especially our Nursery School staff, March 14, 2020 was a day we will never forget. We said goodbye to our students, wished our families a nice weekend, and never thought that we would be mandated to close our doors for the rest of the school year.

Two months later, I walked into the building and had a reality check.

What happened to me was something I never expected. I walked down the hallways and saw the children’s artwork on the walls, the artwork in boxes waiting to be hung for the art show, and an overwhelming sadness came over me. The feeling once I was inside the classrooms was indescribable. I saw all the things that never would happen: the artwork on the drying racks that had not yet made it home, unfinished journals, incomplete science experiments, Passover projects begun and never completed; dreams, projects, and plans that never came to fruition. We

united as a community, we pooled our resources, and we forged ahead. We Zoomed, we FaceTimed, we visited, and we even danced to the sounds of our socially distant DJ.

And now we are back, ready to start the new year together. While things might be a little different this year, the warmth and the unity in our building is still the same. We look forward to a year together of play and of learning,

of partnership and commu-nication.

With smiles on our faces (through our transparent masks), we look forward to welcoming you and your families back to school. With all our COVID-19 protocols

in place, we feel confident that we can overcome our chal-lenges and our program will remain as strong and as vital as ever.

Wishing all our families a happy, healthy New Year!

Shana Tova U'metukah! I would like to wish you all a very happy and healthy new year. As the school year begins, I look forward to seeing many of you at drop-off and pick-up each day.

Although our High Holiday programs will be virtual this year, there are so many experiences to choose from. I know that each family will be able participate in the way that works best for them. Until the time that we can be together in person, I hope to see you all in your zoom windows.

Be on the lookout for exciting virtual events coming your way from all of our youth divisions. Mary, Sasha, and I have been working throughout the summer to bring your children new and exciting virtual experiences! We can’t wait for USY, Kadima, and Chaverim to begin!
