The Glorious Qur’aan is unique and incredible unlike any other book. It is unparalleled to any other form of literature known to mankind in all the history and the future to come. The miraculous words of this Divine Book form a unique structure. Let us see how:!

The Qur’an consists of 114 Surahs. Many a times the word Surah is translated into chapter, when in fact Surah does not possess the characteristics of a chapter. Chapters are always progressive in nature and based on a certain sequence which can be subject, chronological or size. However, the Qur'aan beats all these sequences since it does not follow them. Hence, the word Surah is unique and only attributed to The Qur'aan. This leaves one’s mind perplexed as to how the Qur'aan is ordered or structured.!

Human minds are limited to the extent of knowledge, sources or capabilities, which is the reason the order in which the Qur'aan is recorded seems complex. In truth, The Qur'aan does have an order, an order that is designed by اهلل to cater to the readers who wish to be guided. Its unmatchable structure

leads to only one phenomenon: This is a word of اهلل.!

Another example to further illustrate its divine structure is in Surah Al Baqarah. One must recall that the revelation was originally an oral tradition. For instance Surah Al Baqarah was revealed over a course of 10 to 12 years, and in between many other parts of the Qur'aan were revealed too. When the time of recording and preserving the Surah came, Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be upon him), by the command of The All Mighty Allah, instructed his Companions (May Allah be pleased with them) the exact order of the Surah to be recorded (dictating the order of the Ayahs in the Surah for memorization, studying and preserving)!

This Surah has 286 Ayahs (commonly translated as Verses). Back in the time of our Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him), the concept of numbering the Ayahs did not exist. We find now that in Ayah 143 (the exact middle Ayah of this Surah) Allah, Exalted is He says:  !

Qur’aan - Brilliant in its Structure

Page 4: As sabiqoon2

!وكذلك جعلناكم أمة وسطا

“Thus we have appointed you a middle nation…”!

The word middle has come right in the middle of the Surah. Another translation of the wordوسطا also be described as balanced or just. Balancing and justice also requires one to be in the middle of two sides. Hence one can easily deduce that this requires something more than human intellect. A human mind cannot possibly reach such perfection in the structure and placement of spoken words. The Quran is filled with such miraculous examples, affirming its true source: Allah, The Most Supreme.!

In the articles to follow (In Sha Allah) we will reflect upon more of these astounding examples from The Qur’aan, so as to appreciate and understand its linguistic beauty. !

(Sahih Muslim, Sunan Tirmizi)!✦"The salat offered in Musjid-ul-Haram is increased by a hundred thousand salaah. For verily one obtains one hundred and fifty million (150,000,000) rewards for a salaah offered therein." Etiquettes of Quran Recitation

Spiritual Etiquette:!1-Iklaas: !Only to please Allah Subhan wa Ta’ala and no other motivation. As Nabi s.a.w has mentioned “All actions are judged by intentions”.!

2-Khushu: (Submissiveness) !To approach with this realization that this is Kalaam Allah. Allah Subhan wa Ta’ala mentioned in Surah Al Hashr aya - 21 “If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and breaking down from fear of Allah”.!

3-Attentiveness: !“So when the Quran is recited listen to it and be silent that you may receive mercy” Surah Al A’raaf (204). So when this is the commandment regarding to listening the recitation then what about the one who is reciting?!

4-Reward: !We should expect reward while reciting so automatically our enthusiasm and concentration goes up and this also gives us motivation to learn tajweed and give each letter its due as Ibn Mas’ud reported that Allah’s Messenger P.B.U.H said: “If anyone recites a letter from Allah’s book, he will be credited one virtue and a virtue gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif Laam Meem is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter.”Tirmidhi.!

5-Purification: !Try to cleanse our heart from all sins so that we can remove the barrier between us and the Glorified Qur’an because Qur’an is hidayah for the Muttaqin.!

Physical Etiquette:!

1-Purity: !To recite in a state of purity and wudu.!

2- Cleanliness: !The place of recitation should be clean.!

3-Al Isti’atha: !To start with Isti’atha or ta’wuth (seeking refuge in Allah Subhan wa Ta’ala from shaitan) as mentioned in Surah Nahl: 98 “So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Shaitan, the rejected.”!

4-Al Basmala: !Start recitation with the name of Allah and also in the beginning of each surah except Surah Tawba.!

5-Tarteel: !Recite leisurely without haste in a beautiful voice distinctly pronouncing each letter “And recite the Qur’an (aloud) in a (slow and melodious) style (tarteel)” - Surah Al Muz'zamil aya-4. Prophet Mohammed s.a.w said “Beautify the Qur’an with your voices” Sunan Abi Daw’ud. When Um Salamah was asked about the recitation of the Prophet s.a.w she described it as a recitation ‘clearly distinguished letter by letter.’!

May Allah make us recite His kalaam in the way He wants us to ponder and understand its meaning and act in the way that He is pleased with us. Ameen.!

"بسم اهلل الرحمن الرحيم

All praise be to Allah, we praise Him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and from the evil of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, there is none who can misguide, and whoever is misguided none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone with no partners, and I bear witness that Mohammed (pbuh) is His servant and messenger."

Rules Regarding Allah’s Names and Attributes"

I - All of Allah's Names are of Majesty and Perfection and no negative meaning can be derived from them. "

“…To Him belong the most beautiful Names” [20:8]. This also necessitates that a being that does not have such Names/Attributes cannot be worthy of worship. "

When he said to his father, “O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all? [19:42] And the people of Moses made, after [his departure], from their ornaments a calf – an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to a way? They took it [for worship], and they were wrongdoers. [7:148]"

Here an important point is made, Allah(swt) shows that one incapable of speaking is unfit for worship. So whoever rejects the attribute of Speech from Allah has actually fallen into the same error as Bani Isra’eel."

II - All of Allah’s Names and Attributes are taken from the Sacred Texts, unlike descriptions (khabr)."

Allah has Names (Asmaa), Attributes (Sifaat) and Actions (Af’aal). Allah’s Names are most specific. Every Name of Allah azza wa jall is an Attribute, every Attribute is an Action, and every Action is a Description. The reverse is not true, so for example, not every Attribute is a Name, but every Name is an Attribute. Names and Attributes must come from the Quran and Sunnah. An important principle to keep in mind also is that we should not speak about Allah without knowledge. "

A Khabr is a description of Allah without any negative meaning. So for example in the Quran it says, Say, “What thing is greatest in testimony?” Say, ” Allah is witness between me and you. [6:19] This is an example of a Khabr that occurs in the Quran, i.e. “shay (thing)”, and this is neither a name nor an attribute."

An example of a Name would be Ar-Rahmaan, and an Attribute would be Allah’s Speech (Kalam)."

III - Allah's Names and Attributes are Unlimited in Number even though what we know of His Attributes is more than His Names."

The Prophet (saw) said, “Allah has 99 names (100 minus 1), whoever memorizes (enumerates) them will enter Paradise” [Bukhari/Muslim]."

Parents and Productivity:"Organising our Islamic Home"

What: One aspect of a home we tend to neglect and which has great impact on the upbringing of our children, without us realising it sometimes, is being organised. When parents set up a trend of responsibility assigned to every member of the household, children grow up ready to follow what is around him or her. It is for the mothers to take up this challenge to build a good organisational system at home so that everyone participates in a task. !

Why: Organising our homes well will get our children to be used to a routine and learn the Organisational skills from different angles. It will teach them a sense of responsibility and duty. Children should learn that people have rights over each other as well as, duties towards each other, while sharing a house with their parents, brothers, sisters and elders. The adult members of the family gotto perform certain duties towards them and they as children have to accomplish some duties in their regards as well. It has to be taught that Allah, our Creator has primary rights on us; His Prophet (saws) taught us many things for our survival and well-being in this world and Hereafter. Therefore we also have duties to him (sallallahu alayhi wa salaam). Then our parents, relatives, teachers and elders have rights on us. So we should be willing to serve them.!

How: Children should know that the Muslim home gives priority upon how to worship Allah Alone, and follow correctly the Sunnah of His Prophet. !

Tool: The task schedule is to be done according to every family member’s capacity and all should try their level best to be constant in word and action. This way, children will understand the importance of maintaining their duties towards their home by learning the correct skills which they will implement it throughout their lifetime.!…to be continued…!

Education: Homeschooling"Part 1: Introduction"In our today’s fast paced world where the best education is measured by competitiveness for financial achievement, “Liberated” social status and global identity, very little room is made for Islamic education at a state level in many Muslim countries. !

Educational system curricula are being “modernised” or “globalised” consequently conflicting with Islamic values, traditions and identity which are inherent to a Muslim society.!

The successful blending of the Islamic and “current modernised” educational system is not yet to be seen rather it is the dominance of the latter over the first, which causes a disconnect among Muslim parents concerned about the degradation of their children morals, values and identity. !

Children are the first victims of this change and an increasing number of parents are looking for options to take back the control, for some unfortunately, only to realise that it is too late.!

A S S A B I Q O O N

Page 8: As sabiqoon2

Why should we invest our time in securing the best in matter of education especially Islamic education for our children? It is because simply children are an Amanah (trust) from Allah and parents will be answerable for this trust. Parents have a duty to teach their children what will save them in this world and in the Hereafter. !

Is the school of today teaching our children good manners, being dutiful to parents, maintaining good relations with relatives, inculcating in them brotherly love, warning them against the evil consequences lying and abusing others, or backbiting and slandering? Parents find themselves in a bottle neck squeezed between two opposite systems at times where they constantly struggle to rectify their children’s behaviour.!

Often comes as a solution to change schools or keep the child at home when things go beyond control.!

An interesting alternative is seen through the Homeschool which often redefine the involvement of parents in their children’s education.!

Our next topic of this series will look closely are the pros and cons of Homeschooling and what should parents prioritise in the education of their children.!

Health: !The lunch box!Do we really know what our children’s lunch at the canteen is made of? Often children have to satiate their appetite with a “fast-food”. Obesity has become a growing issue that parents find difficult to handle. Actually, very little time is needed to prepare a good and healthy lunch box for a greater advantage.!

According to Hillary Wright, MEd, RD, a Boston-based nutritionist at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates :"The most nutritious lunches include foods from at least three food groups, but that doesn't mean children must have the traditional sandwich, fruit, and milk for good health," Some ideas of lunch could be

made of a beautiful blend of what our children like but the nutritious part should not at all be compromised.!

Here are some other yummy and easy lunches that use foods from at least three of the food groups: "

• Tortilla wraps with shredded cheese, chopped chicken, and cut vegetables !

• Egg salad, whole-wheat bagel, and fruit !• Whole-grain roll with butter or

margarine, 2 hard boiled eggs, and carrot sticks !

• 1-2 slices leftover thin crust cheese pizza and fruit or vegetables.!

• 8 ounces of low-fat yogurt, whole-wheat crackers, and fruit !

• 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter, whole-grain crackers or bagel, and fruit or vegetables !

• 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese or hummus, whole-grain crackers, and cherry tomatoes !

• Bean-based soup or stew in a thermos, whole-grain roll with butter or margarine, and dried fruit !!

The Perfect Way Of Life"The perfect way of life is finding happiness in the remembrance of Allah.!

!(فاذكروني أذكركم واشكروا لي وال تكفرون (2:152152. Therefore Remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will Remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.!

!بسم اهلل الرحمن الرحيم

!الحمدهلل رب العاملني

Peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Prophet, his family, companions, his followers. !

In shaa Allah, I would like to invite you to reflect on some beautiful ayat (verses) from the Qur’an, Surat 28 Al-'Anbyā' (The Prophets), ayat 87:88!

87. And (remember) Dhun-Nun, when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him! But he cried through the darknesses (Zulumat) (saying): "There is no God but You, Glorified be You! Truly, I have been of the Zalimin wrongdoers.'' 88. So We answered his call, and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers.!

Background! The above two ayat speak about the Prophet Yunus AS, when he left the town of Nineveh (Northern of Mesopotamia), where he had been chosen and commanded by Allah SWT to invite its residents to the acceptance of only one God, the message of Tawhid (the message of Islam). After putting some effort without a positive response from the residents of the town to his dawah to turn to Allah, he got frustrated and he left the

Town in anger without awaiting Allah’s command on the matter. He boarded a ship but then he had to be offloaded to lighten the burden in the ship and he was swallowed by a fish by the Will of Allah SWT. Surat 37 As- Saaffaat (Those who set the ranks),  ayat 139-148!

139. And verily, Yunus was one of the Messengers. 140. When he ran to the laden ship. 141. Then he (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers. 142. Then a (big) fish swallowed him as he had done an act worthy of blame. 143. Had he not been of them who glorify Allah. 144. He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection. 145. But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick. 146. And We caused a plant of gourd to grow over him. 147. And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or even more. 148. And they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while.!

A S S A B I Q O O N

Page 11: As sabiqoon2

The sequence of the incidents that followed his premature departure from the town made Yunus AS realize his error and to flee to Allah by the means of one of the most effective supplications to Allah SWT, where Yunus AS confesses the purity, the glory of Rabbana and the injustice he committed by leaving the town without awaiting the commandment of Allah SWT. !

! "ال إلـه إال أنت سبحـنك إنى كنت من الظـلمني

There is no God but You, Glorified be You! Truly, I have been of the Zalimin wrongdoers.'' Surat 28 Al-'Anbyā' (The Prophets), part of verse 88.!

Allah SWT not only listened to his dua, but He also responded and he was saved from the belly of the fish. He then completed his mission in the town of Nineveh, with most of the people accepting the message of Islam.!

The Impact! The above ayatul Qur’an on the premature departure of Yunus AS from the town resulting from lack of patience made me realize how many times, we do not leave our missions/projects unfinished without trying our best, without realizing that successful completion takes time and it requires “falling down”, “tripping over”, standing up again and moving forward.!

We cannot give up! This is for me the true message of the Prophet Yunus AS’ real story; Allah SWT reprimanded Prophet Yunus AS by commanding the fish to swallow him, not to “eat” or “hurt” him, Subhanal Allah. Can you see Allah SWT’s Mercy in His action? He was giving Yunus AS an opportunity to flee to Him and to realize that he had done something wrong.!

!!

And here you go, Rabbana inspired the prophet Yunus AS to recite the most suitable words of repentance: !

!ال إلـه إال أنت سبحـنك إنى كنت من الظـلمني

which were the means of opening all the doors of goodness and success for Yunus AS; he was thrown out by the fish on the shore, he survived with most beautiful provision from Allah SWT and  he continued his mission to invite people to the highest Truth, no one is worthy of worship except Allah SWT and this time more than hundred thousand people responded positively to his dawah ( see above ayat 139 to 148, Surat Assaaffat).!

So my beloved reader, when you feel the battle is lost, please do not give up….how many times has not history given us evidence that with the help of Allah, Al Fattah (The Opener, The Most Trustworthy Judge) what seemed impossible became possible…does the incident of Battle of Badr sound familiar? How “few” Muslims, how “many” non-believers??? Who won the battle???!

Victory or achievement does not result from numbers or from our own strength but success is the result of a strong realization that Allah SWT is the One Who decides all the matters (إن - the decision rests only with Allah ,الحكم إال هللSurat 12 Yusuf, part of ayah 67), however we need determination, strong resolution with full reliance in Allah SWT. We need to use the means; we need to put the effort while realizing that the decision belongs to Allah SWT. !

One thing is for sure, whatever test you are going through, I do not think that you have spent even one hour in the belly of a fish…the cry of Yunus AS in three darknesses, darkness of the night, darkness of the sea, darkness of the belly of the fish, Subhanal Allah. was not left unheard by Rabbana…!

Allah says, ‘I am as My servant thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself; and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s span, I draw near to him an arm’s length; if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him with haste.’ Reported by Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmidhi & Ibn Majah, Hadeeth "

In a nutshell whatever trial or test you are going through, remember Allah SWT, because Allah SWT promised in the above hadith Qudsi (sacred narration attributed to Allah, Most High) that when you remember Him, He will remember you and when Allah remembers you I can assure there will be no darkness, there will be only Light, Light and Light! Foods mentioned in the Quran “Honey”!!

“And thy Lord taught the bee to build its cells in hills, on trees and in (men’s) habitations…. there emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is a healing for people. Verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought”. [Soorah Nahl: 68-69]. !

Additionally, in Sahih Bukhari we read that the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said: “Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Quran is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Quran and honey.”!

Honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and immune boosting properties for our body and health.  It not only fights infection and helps tissue healing but also helps reduce inflammation and is often used for treating digestive problems such as indigestion, stomach ulcers and gastroenteritis.!

To keep your energy levels up use honey as an excellent source of easily assimilated energy; honey is one of the most effective forms of carbohydrates to ingest just prior to exercise and to replenish your energy levels.  The glucose contained in honey is absorbed by the body quickly, giving an immediate energy boost, while the fructose content is absorbed more slowly, providing sustained energy. !

When we hear the term Superstar, usually who or what comes to our mind? Probably celebrities like singers, actors or sportsmen. We have become so used to hearing this term being used with certain personalities that we haven't stopped to think WHAT  this term means? What does it mean to be a Superstar?!

Superstars are those who have certain qualities in them that make them admirable or someone who has excelled in a certain field. They have the ability to literally have their admirers 'starry' eyed! They are so well known that most people would know the  biography of the person they admire better than their own family history.!

Ask most youth of today, and  they will come up with various personalities that they admire and think of them as their role model. They will have all the information, the ins and outs of that person and are idolize and elevate them to a very high position. We easily become impressed by the apparent achievements of some people. We are so in awe of them, that we wish to be like them. We are so taken by just by one aspect of a person ,which is most often the worldly aspect of a person. Their integrity, their

morals , their character are not given any importance. And such has become our state--The Muslim Ummah, which has a rich history of REAL Superstars, and who should be the most proud of it shy away from it. The ones who should learn and act upon the lessons from their own history. The ones who should be the foremost in goodness for the society, are now a rarity. Thats because we have found our role models in something fake which is temporary, which in fact has no value or benefit. That's because we are ignorant of Our Past. !

True Superstars are those who possess the qualities that we would like to have and those who have affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people, that would contribute to the society  in a positive way, make sacrifices for the Truth.!

So who is your SuperStar?!If you said The Prophets, then you are right on track. But after The Prophets, who were the Best People ...? The Sahabas- The Companions of the Prophets. How much does one really know about the Sahabas? Most of us know a few of the names, a little information here and there. But do we truly know who the Companions were, what  they went through when they accepted Islam. Did we ever think , and really ponder on  why Allah has honored the Sahabas? Why Allah is pleased with them? !

This and much more ..coming soon. Where we attempt to know about the Sahabas, take a glance at their lives, try to understand who they were insha Allah, try to extract lessons from their lives and understand what Emaan and Taqwa is; and really understand that they are the True Superstars.. "The best people are those living in my generation, and then those who will follow them, and then those who will follow the latter…” Sahih Bukhāri.
