Mast Head The mast head is mostly covered by the main image meaning that the main image is more dominant. This may be because regular readers know what the magazine is called so they don’t need to worry about covering it or not. The mast head is written in a golden font which complements with the gold on the crown which shows power. In addition to this we can see the lettering all in capital letters connoting the importance as it is the mast head of the magazine cover. This is a very conventional feature of a magazine front cover as it gives the reader an outline line of what may be featured inside the new addition of the magazine. Furthermore the use of “furthermore “ gives the audience a more detailed understanding that inside the magazine they will see only the best songs of 2012 and 2013 therefore will interest the audience to purchase and read further. These sort of mast head’s are used to grab the audiences attention ultimately get them to purchase the magazine. The colouring of white for the lettering compliments the colour scheme of the all round magazine front cover with the red and gold. In addition to this I feel that the colour white has been used as it would normally connote goodness, purity and innocence however here it used to contrast the artists personality. This is a very conventional feature of music magazine especially R&B and Hip Hop as the majority of artists are seen to be thugs and go against the law. This is seen with the constant reference to drugs and alcohol. Sky line Here we can clearly see the sky line in big bold white font which states what will be featuring within the magazine. This shows the reader what will be featuring which will get there attention. Also the colour white complements with both the red and white making attractive to the eye of the reader Main Image The main image is very dominant of the whole front cover of this magazine. This could show the reader of the power and dominance of the artist that he has over the industry. As many people knew Biggie Smalls was one of the worlds best ever rapper and hip hop artists which will automatically grab the audiences attention and also knew reader as they see the image. Further more Biggie Smalls is staring straight into the camera. This is called direct address. Direct address is used to show emotion and despair however in this context Biggie is using direct address to show his power and dominance. This is a very conventional feature of a magazine front cover especially in the Hi Hop and R&B genre as the use of direct address makes the reader feel like the artist is looking at them therefore giving them the feel that it is attracting them to read the magazine. Furthermore the direct address is also used to represent Biggie Smalls character which from this image ad from his facial expressions is that he was very serious determined artist. This is seen through both his expressionless features for example keeping a straight face which would generally connote the seriousness of the character. We can see the use f two very significant pros in the main image. We can see both a gold plated crown and also half of what seems to be a gold plated neckless. Firstly the crown is used to represent the artists known “King of Hip Hop”. This is will instantly be recognised by the reader as they would instantly realise the use of it. Furthermore the gold and emerald within the crowd also represents the artists wealth. As we know the price of gold and emerald are not cheap and it seems like from this picture he is just sending it on accessories ultimately aiding to the representation of this wealth. Finally we can see half of what looks like a old plated necklace. This is used again to represent the wealth and success of the featuring artist. As we would normally link the colour gold with money, fame and success it instantly gives the reader an impression of the artist. All of these features help the representation of the artist and ultimately aid to the eye catching image that will hopefully bring the audiences in to then read and buy the magazine Sell Lines Here we can see the sell lines in bold white font which complements the red and gold in the front cover. The sell lines are used in all magazines not only music magazines as it again helps the reader have an insight to what will be featuring the magazine therefore giving them a better understanding whether they will go on to buy it. One of the main Sell Lines is the “ 50 greatest hip hop songs of all time”. This is used to both grab the audiences attention and to revel what will be featured in the newest issue of the magazine. Mast HeadThe mast head is mostly covered by the main image meaning that the main image is more dominant. This may be because regular

readers know what the magazine is called so they don’t need to worry about covering it or not. The mast head is written in a golden font which complements with the gold on the crown which shows power. In addition to this we can see the lettering all in

capital letters connoting the importance as it is the mast head of the magazine cover.

The colouring of white for the lettering

compliments the colour scheme of the all round magazine front cover with the red and gold. In addition to this I feel that the colour white has been used as it would normally connote goodness, purity and innocence however here it used to contrast the

artists personality. This is a very conventional feature of music magazine especially R&B and Hip Hop as the majority of artists are seen to be thugs and go against the law. This is seen with the constant reference to drugs and alcohol.

Sky lineHere we can clearly see the sky line in big bold white font which

states what will be featuring within the magazine. This shows the reader what will be featuring which will get there attention.

Also the colour white complements with both the red and white making attractive to

the eye of the reader

Main ImageThe main image is very dominant of the whole front cover of this

magazine. This could show the reader of the power and dominance of the artist that he has over the industry. As many people knew Biggie Smalls was one of the worlds best ever rapper and hip hop artists which will automatically grab the audiences attention and

also knew reader as they see the image. Further more Biggie Smalls is staring straight into the camera. This is called direct address. Direct address is used to show emotion and despair

however in this context Biggie is using direct address to show his power and dominance. This is a very conventional feature of a

magazine front cover especially in the Hi Hop and R&B genre as the use of direct address makes the reader feel like the artist is looking at them therefore giving them the feel that it is attracting them to read the magazine. Furthermore the direct address is also used to represent Biggie Smalls character which from this image ad from

his facial expressions is that he was very serious determined artist. This is seen through both his expressionless features for example

keeping a straight face which would generally connote the seriousness of the character. We can see the use f two very

significant pros in the main image. We can see both a gold plated crown and also half of what seems to be a gold plated neckless.

Firstly the crown is used to represent the artists known “King of Hip Hop”. This is will instantly be recognised by the reader as they would instantly realise the use of it. Furthermore the gold and

emerald within the crowd also represents the artists wealth. As we know the price of gold and emerald are not cheap and it seems like

from this picture he is just sending it on accessories ultimately aiding to the representation of this wealth. Finally we can see half of what looks like a old plated necklace. This is used again to represent the wealth and success of the featuring artist. As we would normally link the colour gold with money, fame and success it instantly gives the reader an impression of the artist. All of these features help the representation of the artist and ultimately aid to the eye catching image that will hopefully bring the audiences in to then read and

buy the magazine Sell LinesHere we can see the sell lines in bold white font

which complements the red and gold in the front cover. The sell lines are used in all magazines not only music magazines as it again helps the reader

have an insight to what will be featuring the magazine therefore giving them a better

understanding whether they will go on to buy it. One of the main Sell Lines is the “ 50 greatest hip

hop songs of all time”. This is used to both grab the audiences attention and to revel what will be

featured in the newest issue of the magazine. This a very conventional feature of a music magazine

as it helps them maintain a vast amount of readers as with such an interesting sell line it is easy for the magazine company to produce revenue as it

will continue to interest the audience to buy reach issue

Anchorage Text A very conventional feature that is included in

the majority of music magazine front covers is this anchorage text. In this example we see “50

greatest hip hop songs of all time”. Here we can see that the publishers have used this to grab the

audiences attention to ultimately read the magazine. Furthermore from the size and

boldness of the font we can see the level of importance of the anchorage text making it seem

like it has a great influence on the audiences decision whether to read it or not. Therefore with

such an eye catching text like “of all time” gives the audience an insight to what will be featuring

in the magazine.

LayoutThe layout of this issue of the magazine is very well presented to show off the headlining artist that will be featured in the magazine. We can see this from the dominance of the

main image covering more than half of the magazine title and covering parts of the mast head. This is used to represent the power of the artist who everyone who is interested in

music will know is Biggie Smalls one of the most highly rated and successful rappers to ever live. This is represented from vast accessories like the crown. In addition to this we see a close up of Biggie Smalls therefore aiding to the dominance of almost the entirety of the magazine cover. Also we see that all sell lines have been minimised shorter to represent the dominance and powerful artist. This I would say is quite a conventional feature of a

music magazine. This is because it gives the audience a clear understanding of the featuring artist and ultimately grabbing there attention if they see a large image of one of

the most successful artist in the R&B and Hip Hop industry.

Institutional Information A very conventional feature that is normally featured in the front cover of

the magazine is the barcode. From this front cover we can see that the publishers have substituted it for some institutional information of the price, date and issue number. This means that it challenges forms and conventions

of a music magazine front cover.

Colour CodesThe colour code used is Gold, Red and White. All of these colours

complement each other which helps grab the audience’s attention even further making them want to read the inside more and more. The

conventions of this colour code would be to draw the reader in and to read on, this colour scheme is very eye catching as it has the red which stands

out and also the big bold white and gold lettering which both complement with each other. This will then be used to get the audiences attention to

then see the main image and hopefully read the magazine.

Mast HeadThe mast head is one of the most important features of a music magazine or in any magazine front cover. This is because it represents the brand and then can be recognised from the audience to ultimately become well known. As well as this we know that as readers of magazines the mast head is most likely the second feature of the cover that is seen by the reader bar the main image. Therefore must be very clear and precise for the readers to be able to read. XXL is a worldwide known brand of R&B and Hip Hop magazines therefore it gets artist like this one Chris Brown to feature therefore will be able to get the audiences to buy them. We see the masthead has been written in a large and bright white font to grab the audiences attention. This is a very conventional feature of a magazine to make the masthead very visible to the reader. The use of the colour whit e I believe has been used to stand out from the surrounding colours (red, gold and black) therefore making it even more obvious to the reader. We also see some of the anchorage text in the same colour font which represents the importance of both the mast head and the artist name. Ultimately with all the features it will then help get the audiences attention and purchase the magazine.

Sky LineIn this particular front cover we can see that there are no signs of

any sell lines. The reason for this is that it increases the emphasises on the main image on the featuring artist.. This challenges forms

and conventions of r&b and hip hop front covers. As the majority of the front covers in this genre will feature the sell lines to help the

readers have an insight to what will be inside the new edition. However we see that they are not included. I believe this will not

effect the customer as if they see such a huge artist like Chris brown as the main image it will instantly attract them to buy it because of

his status in the industry.

Sell lines In this particular front cover we can see that there are no

signs of any sell lines. The reason for this is that it increases the emphasises on the main image on the featuring artist.. This challenges forms and conventions of r&b and hip hop

front covers. As the majority of the front covers in this genre will feature the sell lines to help the readers have an insight to what will be inside the new edition. However we see that they are not included. I believe this will not effect the customer as if they see such a huge artist like Chris brown as the main image it will instantly attract them to buy it because of his status in

the industry

Main ImageI believe that the main image is always the most important feature of a magazine front cover as it is the first thing that the audience look at therefore it must be eye catching and attractive for it to get sales. From this image we see a very

well kown, world wide known artist called Chris Brown. This means that instantly s soon as ne of the targeted audiences

see the front cover will instanly know who it is heling aid towards them reading and buying the magazine. The camera

shot we can see is a close up of chris Brown face. The stereotypical use of a close up is to highlight something

significant in the short for example a close up of the face to express the character/artists facial expression which is used here. Here we see a close up of Chris Brown face including

his right arm also. I believe the arm and hand are in the main image with the face to show the accessories on his arm including his watch and gold plated bracelet. From the

picture we can see several accessories to represent both his wealth and success. Tese are the ring, bracelt, gold teeth and

necklae. All this features hep the representatin of the characters wealth and success as we know hat gold

automatically screams wealth. From Chris’s facial expression it can be seen that he is holding his face trying show off all of

his accessories . Therefore opinions can be formed of him from this. Also with the close up camera shot we see a close

u of the artist which could mean that in the magzine we could see Chris Brown for the first time answering real personal questions that all fans have been waiting for.

Anchorage TextThe Anchorage Text shows the reader clearly who the Main Image

is off as new readers may not know. Also the size of the text is large to emphasise on the artist. People who regularly read the magazine will know who the artist is as he is one of the biggest

names in the genre meaning readers will want to read it as he is so popular. The use of the boldness is very significant as it makes it

more obvious to the reader to notice therefore indicating its importance to the front cover.

The layout of this magazine I believe both challenges forms and conventions of a r&b and hip hop magazine but also conforms to them too. I believe this as it has the

conventional mast head main image with the showing off of their accessories and close up shot which is frequently used however I also believe that choice to not include the sell lines but include many of the well known r&b and hip hop artists

behind the main image challenges the forms and conventions. The use of the background text I feel is very important as not only does it represent the artists in

the genre however for new readers of the genre it can give them an insight too who else is within that particular genre. Furthermore with it challenging conventions it will give the audience something different therefore catching there eye and giving

them the competitive edge over their competitors .

Colour CodesThe main colour used is red, which can be seen to complement the main image

of a big name hip hop artist which we would naturally link with power and dominance that the covering artist has over the music genre. In addition to this

the red also highlights the gold that is featured on the artist’s accessions therefore becomes more easierto see and outstand to the audience. The title

“XXL” we can see is in a large bold white colouring therefore .

BarcodeThe barcode gives the

audience the understanding of the

price and. The barcode is a very conventional

feature of all magazines and will be seen in all

magazines.,

Layout & ImagesIn a conventional double page spread of most genre music magazines we would see one half of the double page covered with a main image of the artist in this case Lupe Fiasco and maybe a pull quote

and the second half with maybe another pull quote, smaller picture and then the main body of the article. We can see this is exactly what has been used here therefore conforms to forms and conventions of a music magazine double page spread. In this particular example we have Lupe Fiasco who is a very famous rapper from the US who has inspired and touched his fans through his lyrics in

his songs. Therefore meaning that Fiasco has received many awards and accolades through his time in the industry which may be the reason why he has such a large feature in this edition of the magazine. This is very significant as they have used a very inspirational figure to be included therefore attracting the audience to read. If we look at the image we can see that a close up shot has been

used of Lupe. This I feel is very effective as when the reader turns the page they are instantly presented with this close up of the artist grabbing their attention. We see the artist not using direct address with the camera which is a conventional shot however here we see him looking to what we don’t know but what looks like he sk. Which could link with the pull quote on the second page of the double

page spread talking about Go. Which could therefore mean that he is quite a religious person and uses God to help him continue his success. The two colours that stand out from this double page spread are Black and Gold. These two colours are shown constantly throughout the two pages from the text and background colour of the pages and also on his accessories like his watch showing wealth. The colour gold instantly gives of the connotations of wealth and success. Also the colour black would connote the power and the colour also helps make the text much more clear and eye-catching for the

reader. The layout of the whole double page spread is very conventional as we see the two pictures and article. The use of the second picture is too keep the interest of the readers so that the page doesn’t look to dull with the black colouring. I believe some of the features within this double page spread could be adapted to be used in my final product as I believe this is a very eye catching double

page spread.

The main image as we can see covers one whole page of the double page spread. This may be used to draw the audience in as its so big and the artist is very well known and popular in the industry. This is used so that the audience stop when looking through the magazine and make them want to read the article.

The colour code used in this double page spread is a mixture of Gold, White and Black. Gold is normally seen as wealthy and high class showing the audience that the artist is wealthy and “high class”. Secondly the colour white’s conventions would be off angles and god which links to the main body of the text about his relationship with god. Finally the colour black has conventions of dark, anger and violence which again links with the black hoodie the artist is using.

Text A convemtional doubv page spread article will consist of a good amount of content onm the article. This is because as the prices of music magazines are constanly on the riis

Readers will be wanting as much content as possible and here we can see that it most defintley ticks that box. Throghout the text we can see that the article is about when Lupe was once at a gig therfore keeping the readwers entertained . We can see a pull quote used from a part of the article “ God Loves You” from this simple part of the pull quote it instantly shows the reader of Lupe Fiasco’s religious beliefes therefore could interest readers further. We see some of the significant words ghighlitede in either a white or gold colour therefore expressing its importance and can be seen to describe him .

Furthermore the text in the pull quote we can see that there are both gold and white lettering in the text. The white text is all linked with God, we can see this as for example “Being humble” and “Struggle”. Both of these words relate to God showing the audience about the relationship between the artist and God. In addition to this the gold lettering is just additional text. Both gold and white

complement each other making the text more attention grabbing towards the audience In addition to trhis the font sizes make it very readable for the reader without having to strain there eys to read and also we the font of the title and pull quote in a larger font to represent its importnace.

Page 4: As Media Powerpoint

The main image here is covering one whole page of the double page spread, this shows that the main image is very dominant of the spread. The artist who makes the double page spread in the magazine is normally very popular and is very well known who will automatically attract customers to buy the magazine. The artists in this double page spread is “Bow Wow” and he is a very well known artist in both industries Hip Hop and R’n’B therefore creates an interest in reading to the audience. However many people did not know that Bow Wow is also a very successful TV presenter on a hit US music programme 106 and Park which boosted his publicity incredibly. In addition to this Bow Wow is also an accomplished actor who starred in 5 very famous movies. These include; Like Mike, Fast and Furious 5, Scary Movie 5, Lottery and Roll Bounce. This makes Bow Wow known outside of music therefore more people are aware of who he is therefore more people will be wanting to buy it . As we can see Bow Wow is looking directly at the camera which called direct address. This is normally used to show emotion and fear. Whereas Bow Wow is using his facial expression to show power and has a very serious look. Also we can see that Bow Wow is wearing a silver chain which is most probably worth a lot of money. This shows that Bow Wow is very wealthy due to his success in film music and TV presenting.

In a usual double page spread one page is used for a picture of the specific celebrity and the other side is predominantly used for text. The text is usually about the life e of the person or what they have been doing in their past years. The colour code of this double page spread is black and white. The connotations of the colour black is very formal but also death and power. This may have been used to show the power that Bow Wow has over the hip hop and r’n’b industry. However the contrast with the colour white has connotations of God and angels which links with quote “God”. This shows Bow Wow and his family are very religiously orientated .

Page 5: As Media Powerpoint

The white out line of the “V” which is on the background of the contents page connects to the models legs which are also are in a shape of a V.

The background sticks to the plan basic colours of black and white which helps make the model stand out and the text stand out as the main part of the contents page

The model is wearing heels in this picture which could connect to the fashion side of the magazine.

The model is the main image of this contents page in which she is wearing very seductive and revealing clothes and also is holding a sexy pose with both her body language and facial expression. Furthermore the fact that the model Is wearing silver and gold accessories reflects that the magazine is targeted at the upper class.

The masthead for the contents page is in big bold white text this then contrasts with the dark fading background resulting in making it catch the audience’s attention

The content's page as we can see comes in two different sections, these include; Features and Fashion. This is done because it splits the magazine into two main sections which then makes it easier to read. This may be done because the reader may only be interested in the fashion or features side of the magazine. This shows that the magazine may be targeted at the women audience as it has fashion which generally takes interest by women. Finally underneath these titles there is page numbers and small features with short cover lines explaining what the feature is about. The model also is giving direct address which could show emotion and

emphasis on the sexy look she is trying to give off. The conventions of direct address would be that it make the reader feel like…

Page 6: As Media Powerpoint

TitleThe title in this particular context page is located in the top right hand corner of the page which is a conventional feature of a context page on the majority of the music magazines. One thing in particular about this context page title is that it is in a less

obvious font size and clarity as the VIBE business is a very well known company therefore it has re

Sell LinesHere we can see the sell lines are showing the reader what the magazine will featuring and some of the main artists that will be included in it. The sell lines are very important as it gives the reader an insight of what will be featuring within the magazine therefore attracting the audience to read more.

Main ImageThe main image here stands out in comparison to the rest of the content in the page. This may be used to show the reader that this specific artist will be featuring in the magazine. Furthermore the artists chain also complements the colour code used in this page. This chain suggests that the artists is very wealthy and popular in the industry.

Institutional TextHere we can see this in the bottom left and top right hand corners of the page. The institutional text is used to show the price, the date of the magazine and any other information.

LayoutThe layout of this contents page is predominantly based around the main image. The main image is very large as it gets the audiences attention. The content around the main image is not as important this is why it is in smaller font. The colour code of this contents page is black, red and white. All these 3 colours complement each other meaning that it is more attractive to the eye to the audience making them want to read it.
