Building an App for Your Campus: Case study
OU Libraries NavApp:Motivation, Usage, and Next Steps
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
4000 + incoming freshman.
A first experience with an academic library. What shape will we take in their minds while they develop as scholars?
The bottom line: With more than 400,000 square feet of usable space, Bizzell can be both opaque and intimidating.
Monolithic - In studies, up to 80% of first-time academic library users find the experience anxiety-inducing (Case, 2012).
As the literature suggests, many library interactions will terminate before the variety of services are explored in great depth.
We need to maximize both approachability and visibility. The key: simplifying an extraordinarily complex environment.
APPROACHABILITY
Triangulating indoor location –combination of beacon chirps and corresponding building schematics.
Leads user directly to their chosen destination and provides hyper-local content that we define.
But navigation is just a means to an end…
INDOOR NAVIGATION
Conceptual mockup illustrating a freshman’s perspective of a “BizNavApp” (prior to deployment).
The key: begin with a select few resource choices, then capitalize on this indoor-nav technology to provide downstream choices.

SIMPLIFICATION
Critically, it’s not just location, but location-specific content where the value is added. Not a gimmick – not just for inexperienced users.
Tutorials (e.g. Lynda), Guides, FAQ’s in the form of text, audio, video, or external links.
Real time problem reporting (i.e. technical problems, spills, disruptive behavior, etc.).

WHAT DO YOU NEED?
Cutting-edge (i.e. post 2010) solution to the the visibility approachability issues. Getting ahead of the curve.
Provides real-time instruction/navigation for inexperienced users – a critical demographic to entice if academic libraries hope to thrive in the age of information technology.
Affords a unified – front and back end - UX across online and offline (physical) platforms.
VALUE TO US
P-O-C GOALS• Unify digital/physical campus
resources• Simplify complex indoor (and
outdoor) environments• Support Galileo’s World exhibition
across campus• Generate campus-wide interest in
innovative tool• Feed useful content based on
location and user type.• Provide analytics for gauging
resource usage throughout campus
USAGE (OVERVIEW)• Active Users: 1,700+
• ~1000 iPhone users• Screen Views per visitor: 16+
• ~30,000 screen views total.• 300+ daily, on average• 600+ for Welcome week

SPRING 2016 (GOALS)• Spring 2016 Target: a full 10% of the
student population (~2,900 active users). How?
• UX Consistency• Streamline notifications and
Android UX• Partner Education
• Train service desks at partner locations in NavApp usage
• Solicit more end user feedback• Back-end reporting limited to
quantitative data.• Keep total project costs well under
original estimate.
NEXT STEPS
• Leverage our partner galleries to build on our Fall 2015 momentum
• Work with Webcomm dept. to either integrate key functionality into OU APP or build-out fully customized NavApp
• Build out features (e.g. catalog searches, emergency notifications, etc.)
