By the time you read this, we expect to have closed the deal on the (new to us) building, and we will be just starting on the roofing, (top priority, with the monsoon on it's way), installing new AC units, (next priority, with summer on it's way) and doing whatever else we'll need to do to make our new home suit our needs. A lot of that will involve taking out some walls and doors and trying to arrange the space to allow for a free flow of traffic and good sight lines for viewing the art and also providing for some open and congenial studio space. It's bound to be expensive, messy, and possibly even a little bit contentious, as all remodeling projects tend to be. A major cause for divorce, so I hear. We could be asking for your help sometime soon, but first we will have to agree on a plan. Phil Micheau is putting together a committee to assess our options, and make recommendations that we can present to a contractor. In the meantime, we will continue to occupy our space at Astro St. until the new space is ready. So it's transition time. We are entering a new era, and that gives us something to look forward to, but it also gives us an occasion to look back and see how far we have come as an organization. The HAA has been around now for about 46 years, and we are almost as old as the City of Sierra Vista itself. connued on page 3 ATTENTION: If you have not paid your membership dues for 2015, THIS COULD BE YOUR LAST ARTYFACTS!! Hi ho, Artyfolks,

Happy June! In the meantime,

we will continue to occupy our space at Astro St. until the new space is ready.

So it's transition time. We are entering a new era, and that gives us something to look forward to, but it also gives us an occasion to look back and see how far we have come as an organization. The HAA has been around now for about 46 years, and we are almost as old as the City of Sierra Vista itself.

The original driving force behind it all was a guy by the name of Dale Boatman, a re-tired infantry colonel who was also an ac-complished watercolorist. Some of our

most longtime members, like Angus Wilson, Martha Sprenkle, and Sylvia Rosenkrans took classes with Dale, worked with him to get the organization started, and took part in the very first Art in the Park that was held back in 1971, when the Park had just been opened and was nothing but dirt. Angus recalled what it was like in the very early days. At first, the meetings and classes were held on Ft. Huachuca, but before long the group had expanded and meetings were being held wherever available facilities could be found, and many of the meetings were held "en plein air", in locations all the way from Texas Canyon to Sonoita. Over the years the HAA has met and been head-quartered in all kinds of places around town - from member's studios, to the Thunder Mountain Inn, and for a while at the Mona Bishop room at the (then new) library. Art Shows were held in hotels, churches, banks, and auto dealerships. Artists' work was on display in many different local businesses and public spaces. For a while in the late 90's, the HAA maintained a Gallery in the Chamber of Commerce building on Fry Blvd. After that closed, everything was moved to Astro St., and that's where we have remained for the past 13 years, except that, when in 2011, the opportunity arose to exhibit our work in the Mall, we grabbed it with gusto, and managed to turn a two month gig into a three and a half year gallery business. Now it's hard to imagine hav-ing just a studio without a Gallery too, and we want as much as possible to keep and maintain the kind of exposure we got used to having at the Mall.

And while we have done a lot of moving around over the past 46 years, this will be the first time ever that we will be moving into a building of our own. We know that there will be plenty of challenges and problems to be solved, but we are a creative bunch, so I have no doubt that we will find ways to turn the problems into opportuni-ties. And while there is a lot to be said for the security of having our own place, we also must guard against the temptation to get too complacent about it, and too com-fortable in our own little space. It helps to remember all of the creative ways that our HAA forebears found both to promote their artist members' work and to progress as an organization. We too, should always be looking for ways to make our new digs a vital part of the neighborhood and the community.

And speaking of community, our big community event of the year, "Art in the Park", is now approaching faster than a speeding bullet. If you are considering taking part, either with a booth of your own or in the Members' booth, be advised that the spaces are doled out on a first come, first served basis, so it pays to sign up early. AitP applications can be downloaded off our website, or you can call Lois Bravo (803-0584) or Edie Manion (803-1262) . For the Members' booth, email Trilby Arnold at: [email protected].

And on a completely different topic, the scholarship committee met and voted to award this year's HAA scholarship to Caitlin McKinney of Bisbee, who will be enrolling in art courses at Cochise College. Our congratulations to Caitlin!

And our annual HAA picnic has been postponed until July this year, but Dine with the Artists will be held as usual at Astro St. on June 13th.

Happy summer, Liz Horning, President

Call to Artists Art in the Park Insert Contest- $75 Prize

It's time again for our annual contest to come up with a design for the cover of this year's Art in the Park SV Herald insert. This design will be used not only for the insert that appears in the paper on the weekend before the event, but it's also the one that will go on all of our posters and other Art in the Park advertising for 2015. We will be looking for something bright, bold, and beautiful that evokes the spirit of Art in the Park, and is adaptable to different formats, as the insert version will be square and the posters will be ver-tical. There will be lettering that says: The Huachuca Art Association presents the 44th Annual Art in the Park at Veterans' Memorial Park, Sierra Vista, AZ, October 3rd & 4th, 2015, plus there will be some other copy with details, like a listing of the different categories of merchandise for sale. While you might want to give some thought as to where the lettering might go, and maybe pencil it in on an overlay, do not waste a lot of time on that, as the art department at the Herald always redoes it anyway. What we are looking for is the design concept, something that shows the public what Art in the Park is all about, and lets people know that this is a special event not to be missed.

The deadline for entries is August 15. You can either email a photo of your submission to me at: [email protected], or mail it to: Huachuca Art Association, P.O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ 85636. If it is a digital drawing, it needs to be done at a large enough size and high enough resolution to be printed at an 11 x 17 size. If it is done in traditional media, it will have to be made available to be photographed or scanned. You can call me at: 803-7157 if you have any questions, or if you'd like to arrange to drop your entry off at the Astro St. Studio.

The Urge To Express; by Donald P. Yadusky The proof that everyone is born an artist can be seen in the urge to express themselves found in all human beings. Everyone feels they have something important to say. The fifteen minutes of fame, “Look at me, listen to what I have to say” phenomenon. Ten years ago this was seen in message T-shirts everyone seemed to wear. With messages like, “I have P.M.S. (Pre-menstrual syndrome), and I have a gun”, or “Stop tectonic drift”. We see this in sports jerseys, that say, “I am a booster of this team”. Recently automobiles have stick figure images on the rear window representing the parents and children and and even the dog or cat in the family saying, “This is the family that owns this car”, or bumper stick-ers. Or the logos on clothes, and accessories that seem to scream, “I can afford a Gucci handbag!”. Today texting and facebook on the internet are all the rage. But words are inadequate to express feelings. The true master of expressing feelings in words is the poet. It has been said that we won't really know what it feels like to be on the moon, until we send an astronaut poet to the moon. The way to express feeling is best done non-verbally through art. The self taught Canadian artist Tom Thompson, one of the Canadian “Group of Seven” artists permanently displayed in the McMichael Canadi-an Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada, after two years of painting went into the back country of Canada to paint nature. In one painting made in 1914 he captured the spirit of the Canadian people. The painting has become an icon of the Canadian people. It is a painting of three pine trees with rock and wa-ter in the foreground. The wild, defiant look of the trees surviving the harsh conditions, captured what it meant to be Canadian. This ability of art to capture the essence and true nature of what it means to be human is why art sells for such high prices of four and five million dollars for a single piece of art. This urge to express has a healing power as seen in the cigar box or tramp art of an earlier generation. Homeless artists made decorated boxes from discarded cigar boxes. Gaman Art was the art produced by Japanese United States Citizens from 1992 to 1996 while in camps that segregated them during World War II. This passion that allows art to persevere against all odds was seen in the almost impossible to create art of Christo and Jeanne Claude whose artistic vision included a 24 and a half mile nylon fence stretched along the hills of California.
