CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION!

History: In 1974, the Cedar Rapids Community School District established an alternative high school in a red brick firehouse. Metro began, with 3

teachers and 40 students, to provide an alternative high school classroom setting. By 1978, the school expanded to include an additional campus,

and in 1982 both locations merged into a newer, more spacious building at 1212 7th Street SE.

Metro’s educational program is designed to provide a variety of learning options to meet the Cedar Rapids School District’s graduation require-

ments. Our guiding philosophy is contained in our name: Mastering Edu-cational Tasks Regardless of Obstacles.

Yearbook Staff: Kyra Ashlock, Jordan Entsminger, Dorian Erbes, DaLayla Jackson, Haley Kriz, Dominique McCoy, Tierney Pollard, Kaylan Red-

mond, Julia Robinson, Jax Robison, Makayla Williams

METRO HIGH SCHOOL VISIONAuthored by: Dr. Carlos Grant

The mission of Metro High is shaped around Mastering Educational Tasks Regardless of Obstacles. This will require a community focused on inspiring all members to grow academically, socially, and emotionally within a safe, caring, and nurturing environment. In challenging students and staff toward excellence, I have tried to build enthusiasm and joy for learning. I have personally challenged myself to push for innovation and differentiation in our classes. I believe our staff is up to the challenge and will be making large strides to provide world-class education for our student customers.

I am extremely pleased about how we are respectful of diversity for individuals and groups. Kindness, respect, honesty, and cooperation are central to our success as a community of learners. Metro is bursting with great potential to far exceed expectations and to produce learners and leaders, who refuse to be average, overcome obstacles, and blazing trails to make great impacts in our community and beyond.

I have focused my time this year to learn about our school. Our school is going through a metamorphic stage as we build a foundation to increase rigor in an alternative high school setting. We are focusing on how to best utilize current resources, procure new resources, and identify areas of need to support the growth of the school. My vision for Metro is centered on three key areas: (1) 21st century technology, (2) boundary-free collaboration, and (3) competency based education. My four large goals for this year are as follows:

1. Nurture positive and productive relationships with the members of the Metro School family in order to better understand the culture, history, norms, values and traditions of the school community-at-large.

2. Establish a foundation for continuous school improvement by identifying strengths and opportunities for growth for the school and school community.

3. Collaboratively develop and communicate a clear vision for continuous improvement (academic growth and achievement),

4. Rally the Metro Family towards achieving goals outlined in our shared vision statement through

· on-going and honest communication through crucial conversation

· collaboration,

· challenging complacency,

· a commitment to growth,

· mutual accountability for all,

· celebration of our diversity,

· inclusion of one and all
