An open call to artists was sent out in late April, 2012 announcing the first annual Arts Country Juried Arts Competition. The competition was open to artists living within the South Central Ontario Region (SCOR), as well as the cities of London, St. Thomas, and Brantford. The SCOR includes Brant, Norfolk, Oxford, Elgin, and Middlesex County.

The competition is a fundraiser to support the online and print versions of Arts Country, a unique cooperative regional approach to marketing locally created art, studio tours, and unique cultural and heritage experiences. There is no other project quite like it in Canada.

To enter the competition, artists were required to submit three photographs of their work with descriptions, along with a $50 entrance fee to the Norfolk Arts, Culture, and Heritage Alliance, the not-for-profit, volunteer-driven organization overseeing the Arts Country project.

Approximately 180 pieces were entered from across the region for consideration by the jury. The images were catalogued and randomly posted online with all the details provided by the artists except their names and locations. This way, jurors were able to judge the merits of each individual piece, rather than considering the artist's work as a collection or regional representation.

In order to be accepted into the show, a work of art was required to get at least one 'yes' vote from a juror. After the initial online review was

completed, 16 pieces had received three yes votes, 29 had received two, and 72 – including the eventual winner – received one, for a total of 117 accepted pieces.

The jurors met at the Norfolk Arts Centre on June 18, 2012 to view the accepted pieces in person and award prizes. Again, the works of ar t stood on their own, without any information about the artist. The process took approximately two hours, and careful consideration was given to each piece as it was reviewed and considered for a prize. By the end of deliberations, three unanimous winners were selected. Encaustic painter Sierra Barber of Simcoe was named the first winner of the Arts Country Juried Arts Competition; glass artist Miia Virtasalmi, also of Simcoe came in second; and painter Laurie-Lynn McGlynn of London came third.

The 2012 Ar ts Country Juried Ar ts Competition jurors are Laura Woermke, Executive Director and Curator of the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre; Patricia Deadman, Acting Curator of the Woodstock Art Gallery; and Robert Achtemichuk, former director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo. All three judges have strong backgrounds in a range of artistic disciplines.

Laura Woermke was born in London, and has been a visual art professional for 20 years. A graduate of the University of Windsor's School of Fine Art in 1990 with a Honours BFA in Visual Arts, she has worked steadily as an artist and the Executive Director and Curator

of the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre. She also serves as a director and executive on many arts and cultural boards, advisory panels, and committees. Patricia Deadman is a visual ar tist, independent curator, and writer. She studied Fine Arts at Fanshawe College in London, ON, and obtained her BFA from the University of Windsor. Deadman has participated in numerous artist residencies in Banff, Paris, and Mexico. Her lens-based work has been exhibited since the 1980s and collected in public and private collections throughout Canada, USA, and Mexico. Deadman is the former curator of the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, SK) and currently Acting Curator for the Woodstock Art Gallery.

Rober t Ach temichuk rece ived h is undergraduate degree from the University of Manitoba with a focus on printmaking, and he has also studied in France, Mexico, and Toronto. His work appears in public galleries and private collections across Canada and abroad, including Brussels, Paris, and, Mexico City. He has often been a guest artist or an artist in residence, including the Banff School of the Fine Arts and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Until recently, he was the Director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, ON, and recently exhibited Latitude 43.456193 Longitude -80.500507 at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant.

Opening reception: Friday, June 29, 7:00pm

Arts Country Juried Arts CompetitionMiia Virtasalmi - Second Prize

“I want to create happiness”

“I take the tea party, and stack it up”

Sponsored by

Sunshine, Lollipops, and RainbowsGlass

2012

Glass sculptor Miia Virtasalmi's artwork is inspired by happy childhood memories. The Simcoe artist says that her love of bold colours and round shapes is what leads her to create her clever, whimsical, and engaging works of art. Her prize-winning sculpture Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows, was created with blown, fused, and sand-cast glass, and inspired by her love of fairy tales. “I want to create happiness,” she said.

Virtasalmi is well-known throughout Norfolk County for her blown glass tea party sculptures, which she says bring a domestic, cheery gathering together into a single tower. “I include the entire party,” Virtasalmi explains. “It's not only the table setting, but also the guest characters, whose faces are painted on the teapot sides.”

Originally from Finland, Virtasalmi has exhibited across Europe and Canada, and in Japan, Turkey, and the United States.

More of Miia Vir tasalmi's glass ar t is available on www.pipeandpunty.com. She is stop number seven on the Norfolk Studio Tour, September 22 and 23, 2012.

“I'm interested in waves, but not just in water”

Rock 2012 Acrylic on canvas

Arts Country Juried Arts CompetitionLaurie-Lynn McGlynn - Third Prize

Sponsored by

Laurie-Lynn McGlynn is an award-winning ar tist influenced by the intricate details observable in the natural world. In particular, McGlynn focuses on the interactions between the earth, water, and sky, and Simple Harmonic Motion – a scientific term for the transfer of energy through a wave resulting in an expression of energy in another form.

Norfolk & surrounding counties have been favored with many outstanding artists. We at Bachmann Personal Injury Law wish each and every one of your creative submissions much luck. We would like to encourage all artists to continue with your creativity and growth. Working with our community through fundraising and events such as this is what we at BPIL strive to do. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of Arts Country.

We are also the only legal firm in the area representing only injured people — we do not represent insurance companies, institutions, governments or municipalities.

If you or a loved one has been injured, we welcome the opportunity to discuss your case and provide you our advice.

Call our office at 519-428-8090 or visit our website www.bachmannlaw.ca The consultation is free and you are under no obligation to retain us.

“I'm interested in waves, but not just in water,” the London, Ontario artist explained. “Waves occur in sand, snow, and rocks too, and I'm interested in why. The amount of energy that it takes to cause these patterns is so powerful, but what remains is elegant and sometimes even delicate.”

McGlynn has extensive art education and training, and has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout Ontario and Nova Scotia. Visit www.artistsincanada.com/mcglynn or her blog laurielynnmcglynn.wordpress.com for more information and a listing of upcoming exhibitions.

Coming from many years of working with sculpture, my painting medium is infl uenced by volume and mass. With painting, I’m intrigued that I can fl atten out objects and reject deep space. I’m interested in symbolic colour and spatial relationships that can become the descriptive force to compose narratives.

I feel compelled to draw and paint, mostly In acrylic, often incorporating collaged and drawn elements, intriguing bits and pieces or fragments of text, building up layers or scraping through to expose what lies beneath. My work is more about allusion than appearance. I see myself as a sort of cartographer exploring the hidden territory that gives form to what is.

studio Kim DiFrancesco 2

15 Maple Ave, Brantford | 519.751.1565 [email protected] wwwkdifrancesco.com www.painterofdogs.ca

Calm and dream-like, my paintings are made of luminous colours, gently curving lines and a quiet abundance of space. Light streaming through trees, reflections in water, and colour-infused air illuminate the deeper shades in my work. Recent artworks give a nod to the classical with an accent on natural forms and landscapes.’ www.kdifrancesco.com ‘’Quite by chance, I have become a ‘painter of dogs’. I am embracing the commissions for paintings of dogs. With a free brushstroke and vivid colours, the dogs too are a joy to paint.

She loves the outdoors and her approach to life, and therefore art, always pay respect to the earth and pay tribute to the in-nocence of nature and the power of the elements. Recently, Aliki’s art has been incorporating images of houses that populate her work in various quantities. There are dense subdivisions, and sporadically strewn farm houses, fishing villages and high rises. She has developed a fascination with the buildings in which Canadians dwell.

Ralph is captivated by the simple beauty of shape and colour that surrounds us in our everyday lives, finding inspiration in common subjects we have strong emotional ties to.

In Linda Lee’s case, she is working to have you find intrigue and comfort from her colourific presentations. Everything takes on a new interpretation in Linda Lee’s mind. When she moves that image from her mind’s eye to the artists media, watch-out your senses and perceptions are about to be stimulated. Originally working as water colourist she learned how to blend colour, experiment with interesting mixtures to create images that are abstract and engaging. Now working in mixed media as her realm of expression, she is adding textures that leave you and your guests asking: “How did she do that?” or “Is that what I think it is… I had better take a closer look.” In the Linda Lee artistic experience, she is working to have you find intrigue and comfort from her colour. presentations.

You can often find her behind her easel in the studio or outside with a sketch book. Jeanette now lives in Paris and her impressionistic and bold landscapes depict the surrounding area, or wherever her travels take her. studio Debora Kortlandt11

18 Chestnut Ave, Brantford | 519.304.5861

My work is impressionistic. I use primary colours for their simple beauty and intensity. The beginnings of my ideas form in colour. A palete knife allows me to manipulate the thick layers of oil paint, affording a lush texture to my paintings as I boldly blob the paints on canvas and board. There is movement and energy in the trails left from the sweep of the knife. When travelling and away I make colourful sketches with acrylics as the beginnings of my new works. In my garden studio I paint those impressions in bright, thick oil paint. I paint seascapes, landscapes and still life with flowers. I paint the beauty of what I see; the beauty of life.

Jim has been carving and sculpting off and on for over thirty years. Jim says that other obligations and projects have sometimes got in the way in his life, but he has always come back to the studio. It is important to listen to that little voice inside us. Highschool at BCI was the beginning of his interest in sculpture and that interest has continued for most of his adult life as a serious hobby and obsession. Jim is self taught but has taken instructional courses form Master Carvers, Neil Cox and Fred Zavadil. Other carv-ers and sculptors, too numerous to mention, have provided a wealth of guidance and information. Jim has entered his carvings in competitions at wood shows in Ontario. He has won best of show in London and most recently won second and third prize at the Hamilton Wood Show. Jim is now ready to share his passion with the community and hopes to display his carvings publicly.

I use extensive colour, expressive brushwork, layering and different glazing techniques. Using extensive amounts of Pouring Medium in layers with painting between each layer, produces two dimensional paintings that actually become three dimensional. The optical effect is amazing and taunts the viewer to want to push themselves into the image. This three dimensional effect brings viewers closer to my work where they can see the great intricacies and workmanship of each painting. This technique also creates fantastic floating movement in my work...like hundreds of soap bubbles float-ing around our yard and through our gardens, creating excitement and a moving landscape of endless possibilities. 196 Grand River Ave (rear), Brantford | 519.771.8421 [email protected] facebook.com/jenniferpalmerart Always fascinated by the strange and curious ways of animals, domestic and wild alike, I have noticed the even stranger is the relationship between us. I wonder how much do they know about us? Are we different in all ways, or are we much more similar than we think? Watching people with their pets through my work has lead my artwork into this anthropomorphic journey. Focusing more on farm animals I see that each has a job. There is a dependency on both ends. In trying to capture ‘expression’ in the animals faces, I see that more and more they are surprisingly human! I wonder...do they see us as more and more animal like? George Orwell may not not agree!! Robin Baratta - Art Emporium19

177 Main St, Port Stanley | 226.658.1888 [email protected] art is inspired by a life long fascination with fossils, rocks and the textures of old and worn artifacts. My most com-mon choices of subject matter are motivated by my concern for environmental issues, especially the loss of pollinators. I returned to art after a close friend died too young of breast cancer, and now paint full time, participating in several guilds and shows. I’m part of the Art Emporium in Port Stanley.

Sandra England - Art Emporium19

[email protected] a very early age Sandra has been sketching portraits, animals, and cartoons. She has always explored her creative nature through crafts, art, and music. Her work is diverse using Watercolour, Acrylic, and Mixed Media, with subject matter that varies from representational landscape; floral art; figura-tive work, and often more abstract mixed media. Her most recent adventure in art has taken her into abstract figurative impressionistic art. All of her work is signed Sam, a nickname from childhood, which has followed her throughout her life. Sandra’s creativity is inspired by the beauty in nature, and fuelled by the need to express herself in ways that can be shared with others. “I have always been a keen observer of nature, but painting changes the way a person looks at the world.\” One of five partners in the Art Emporium Port Stanley, Sandra’s work is displayed along with the 32 artists represented in the Boathouse Gallery. Visit the Art Emporium at the end of Main Street in Port Stanley and for a preview check out our website www.ArtEmporium.ca.

Rose Klein - Art Emporium19

[email protected] are Rose’s passion - the rich colours, textures, materials, of glass, bone, crystal, plastic or semi-precious gems. Since ancient times, beads have been used to adorn the body and clothes, and they where used in art as well. Embellishing hand-dyed and painted fabrics with beads has been an excit-ing journey of discovery and growth for Rose as a bead and textile artist. She is in constant search of ways to bring together her love of beads, fibre, and fabric. From an intricate piece of jewellery, to embellishing hand-painted cloth, beads will always be a source of inspiration for Rose’s artwork. Visit the Art Emporium in Port Stanley to view Rose’s art – she is one of five partners who opened the Gift Boutique and spacious Boathouse Gallery in March 2012. The work of 32 Boathouse Members is now on display in the fine art gallery. The Gift Boutique offers hand-crafted work from many local and regional artists. Robert Reid - Art Emporium19

[email protected] Reid has been an artist since high school and he is also an accomplished musician. Robert’s work has been entered and juried into many shows and venues. After winning a citywide United Appeal poster contest Robert realized that his work was good enough to sell! Encouraged by many friends, teachers, and his wife Yvonne, Robert has continued painting for many years. Robert concentrated on working in Oils in the 1950’s, Acrylics in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Pen and Ink, Charcoal and Mixed Media in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In 2000 Robert became a member of Art Circle in London and started paint-ing in Watercolour, which is now his favourite medium. Robert’s partnership with four other artists to open the Art Emporium is a new experience and a source of constant pleasure. “The future is bright as Art Emporium Port Stanley is hopefully going to become an exciting art destination in Southwestern Ontario…and the world.” If you are fortunate to visit the Art Emporium when Bob is working don’t miss the opportunity to tour the Boathouse Gallery and Gift Boutique with him – his knowledge of each of the artists and their work is impressive. www.ArtEmporium.ca

June-Anne Reid - Art Emporium19

[email protected]

June-Anne enjoys painting realistic images and landscapes, may they be real or imaginary, but her real love lies in abstracts. Taking her brushes to canvas her thoughts and feelings are transformed to become much more than shapes and images. She often begins with a scene or a colour scheme in mind, mostly from a memory or feeling that has touched her. As the work progresses, the painting emerges. It is from these beginnings that she enhances her fi nished product. During this creative process she often steps back, putting the painting at the \’end of the hall\’, so to speak, and from a distance seeks out the possibilities of what that art could become. This inspires June-Anne to enhance the painting with ideas that emerge from within, or what feels right. She frequently names her paintings to encourage the viewer to look deeper and become more involved with her work. June-Anne, one of the fi ve partners who opened the Art Emporium in Port Stanley this year, proudly displays her work along with the other 31 Boathouse Members in the Art Emporium Boathouse Gallery. Tour Amish countryside on backroads where large commercial farm operations are intermingled with horse and buggies, inside one of the largest Dutch communities outside of Holland.

Visit a local farmer’s market, or explore our stately public buildings, Victorian museums, andbeautiful public gardens. You’ll soon see why we won the “International Communities in Bloom” title.Photographers love it here, and return year after year.

Eat some great local food as part of our Oxford Fresh program (www.oxfordfresh.com). In my work I try to capture fleeting memories or reflective moments in time. Those colors and feelings of forgotten days. The warmth of the sun on my face or the way it dances across the water or through the trees. These are the moments that fill my soul and influence my work. The wind, rain and sun constantly pound, wear and reshape all that we see. I approach my work with techniques that mimic these elements. I paint on mahogany plywood so I can scratch, burn, carve, sand and stain my way through a piece as I break down and weather the wood. The worn textures compliment not only the beauty of wood and nature, but Mother Earth and our experiences with her.

A smile, a raise of the eyebrow-that’s usually the way I look when I recover the pieces just fired. I am constantly amazed by the possibilities with Raku. Over the past 15 years I’ve enjoyed creating pieces, understanding and refining the pro-cess of this complex artform. And the anticipation- the hope that the pieces survive firing and the subsequent satisfac-tion of cleaning them to reveal the spectrum of colour & finish in balance with the form.
