An open call to artists was sent out in late April, 2012 announcing the first annual Arts Country Juried Arts Competition. The competition was open to artists living within the South Central Ontario Region (SCOR), as well as the cities of London, St. Thomas, and Brantford. The SCOR includes Brant, Norfolk, Oxford, Elgin, and Middlesex County.

The competition is a fundraiser to support the online and print versions of Arts Country, a unique cooperative regional approach to marketing locally created art, studio tours, and unique cultural and heritage experiences. There is no other project quite like it in Canada.

To enter the competition, artists were required to submit three photographs of their work with descriptions, along with a $50 entrance fee to the Norfolk Arts, Culture, and Heritage Alliance, the not-for-profit, volunteer-driven organization overseeing the Arts Country project.

Approximately 180 pieces were entered from across the region for consideration by the jury. The images were catalogued and randomly posted online with all the details provided by the artists except their names and locations. This way, jurors were able to judge the merits of each individual piece, rather than considering the artist's work as a collection or regional representation.

In order to be accepted into the show, a work of art was required to get at least one 'yes' vote from a juror. After the initial online review was

completed, 16 pieces had received three yes votes, 29 had received two, and 72 – including the eventual winner – received one, for a total of 117 accepted pieces.

The jurors met at the Norfolk Arts Centre on June 18, 2012 to view the accepted pieces in person and award prizes. Again, the works of ar t stood on their own, without any information about the artist. The process took approximately two hours, and careful consideration was given to each piece as it was reviewed and considered for a prize. By the end of deliberations, three unanimous winners were selected. Encaustic painter Sierra Barber of Simcoe was named the first winner of the Arts Country Juried Arts Competition; glass artist Miia Virtasalmi, also of Simcoe came in second; and painter Laurie-Lynn McGlynn of London came third.

The 2012 Ar ts Country Juried Ar ts Competition jurors are Laura Woermke, Executive Director and Curator of the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre; Patricia Deadman, Acting Curator of the Woodstock Art Gallery; and Robert Achtemichuk, former director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo. All three judges have strong backgrounds in a range of artistic disciplines.

Laura Woermke was born in London, and has been a visual art professional for 20 years. A graduate of the University of Windsor's School of Fine Art in 1990 with a Honours BFA in Visual Arts, she has worked steadily as an artist and the Executive Director and Curator

of the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre. She also serves as a director and executive on many arts and cultural boards, advisory panels, and committees. Patricia Deadman is a visual ar tist, independent curator, and writer. She studied Fine Arts at Fanshawe College in London, ON, and obtained her BFA from the University of Windsor. Deadman has participated in numerous artist residencies in Banff, Paris, and Mexico. Her lens-based work has been exhibited since the 1980s and collected in public and private collections throughout Canada, USA, and Mexico. Deadman is the former curator of the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, SK) and currently Acting Curator for the Woodstock Art Gallery.

Rober t Ach temichuk rece ived h is undergraduate degree from the University of Manitoba with a focus on printmaking, and he has also studied in France, Mexico, and Toronto. His work appears in public galleries and private collections across Canada and abroad, including Brussels, Paris, and, Mexico City. He has often been a guest artist or an artist in residence, including the Banff School of the Fine Arts and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Until recently, he was the Director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, ON, and recently exhibited Latitude 43.456193 Longitude -80.500507 at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant.

Glass sculptor Miia Virtasalmi's artwork is inspired by happy childhood memories. The Simcoe artist says that her love of bold colours and round shapes is what leads her to create her clever, whimsical, and engaging works of art. Her prize-winning sculpture Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows, was created with blown, fused, and sand-cast glass, and inspired by her love of fairy tales. “I want to create happiness,” she said.

Virtasalmi is well-known throughout Norfolk County for her blown glass tea party sculptures, which she says bring a domestic, cheery gathering together into a single tower. “I include the entire party,” Virtasalmi explains. “It's not only the table setting, but also the guest characters, whose faces are painted on the teapot sides.”

Originally from Finland, Virtasalmi has exhibited across Europe and Canada, and in Japan, Turkey, and the United States.

Norfolk County’s creative minds inhabit every corner of our great community. From engineers to art-ists, web developers to musicians, Norfolk County is blessed with many uniquely talented people.

Many of our artists’ studios are open year round. Check out ceramic artists and potters such as Anne Armstrong, Marguerite Larmand, Joanne Munzar, Joseph Panacci, Melissa Schooley, Lesley Starnes. Norfolk County is home to excellent glass artists, like Merianne Fess, Carolyn Muir and Miia Virtasalmi. Sculptors such as Robert Tannahill and Garry Walker are well known. Those who work in wood, like Ron Bezzo, Trevor Darbishire, Bruce “House” Milner and Harley Snively, and Florence Watkinson who works with fabric, are highly respected. Michael Keller is a book binder and restorer.

Lighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Dover is a centre of excellence in theatrical production, offer-ing professional shows and programming throughout the year. Performance is a theme in Norfolk. Community groups exhibit lots of theatrical and musical talent, also at Theatre Norfolk, Simcoe Little Theatre, Young Theatre Players, Old Town Hall in Waterford and the Capitol Theatre in Delhi.

There are many art galleries, museums, an arts centre and other centres of creativity in Norfolk County. Sierra is a young artist who uses personal mythology in her encaustic paintings. At times the work seems austere and enigmatic; other times it becomes humorous and lyrical.

Pamela is a silversmith who also works in gold. She creates unique, custom works often incorporating personal stories and elements of nature into each design. She uses the technique of “raising” to fabricate 3D artistic and functional silver hollowware goblets and bowls.

Furniture not found in stores, quality & originality. Some lathe turnings, yellow birch, are from North Bay area with unique configuration. I also have turnings made from overgrown catalpa wood from the Wallageburg area. which is extremely light with beautiful markings.

We have a very scenic yard which backs on to a forest with lots of flower beds which I get inspiration from for all seasons of the year. I have done watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings. Watercolour is by favourite, it is very challenging. The paintings are original with mixed media, acid free paper and mattes ready to be hung. Joyce has been painting in watercolours for more than 30 years. She has tried other mediums but does most of her work in watercolours. Joyce enjoys painting architecture and has done several commissions for home portraits and old churches. She loves what can happen when colours meet on the paper and unplanned but magical things happen. Joyce has studied watercolours with several different artists over the years, taking bits and pieces of tech-niques from each. Her work has a 3 dimensional characteristic that providing a unique look.

Henry Verberne resides in Delaware, Ontario, a member of The Strathroy Art Group and has been creating one of a kind segmented wood works since 2005. His pieces are assembled and turned on the lathe, from wood obtained from all parts of the world to give a distinct look for each finished item. Segmented turn-ings are not approached by many artists, as it is very time consuming and labour intensive. Through this method he creates bowls, vases, wood stem wine goblets and pens. His artistic mission is to bring the hidden beauty and meaning of life to light through artistic expression. Thomas is presently working on an extended series entitled “Lumen”. Born and raised in Holland, Jeanette has been painting from an early age. She worked as a Delft Blue Pot-tery Painter for two years after finishing high school, but then obtained her BA in arts and textile as well as a teaching degree. Two country moves later, having worked as a teacher and graphic designer, she is now the art director of a small marketing firm, and continues to find time for her art. You can often find her behind her easel in the studio or outside with a sketch book. Jeanette now lives in Paris and her impressionistic and bold landscapes depict the surrounding area, or wherever her travels take her. She aims to ‘create a breathing space in the busy life around us’, so come and hear the wind, and feel the sunshine on your back when you lose yourself in one of her works.

My work is impressionistic. I use primary colours for their simple beauty and intensity. The beginnings of my ideas form in colour. A palete knife allows me to manipulate the thick layers of oil paint, affording a lush texture to my paintings as I boldly blob the paints on canvas and board. There is movement and energy in the trails left from the sweep of the knife. When travelling and away I make colourful sketches with acrylics as the beginnings of my new works. In my garden studio I paint those impressions in bright, thick oil paint. I paint seascapes, landscapes and still life with flowers. I paint the beauty of what I see; the beauty of life.

Jim has been carving and sculpting off and on for over thirty years. Jim says that other obligations and projects have sometimes got in the way in his life, but he has always come back to the studio. It is important to listen to that little voice inside us. Highschool at BCI was the beginning of his interest in sculpture and that interest has continued for most of his adult life as a serious hobby and obsession. Jim is self taught but has taken instructional courses form Master Carvers, Neil Cox and Fred Zavadil. Other carv-ers and sculptors, too numerous to mention, have provided a wealth of guidance and information. Jim has entered his carvings in competitions at wood shows in Ontario. He has won best of show in London and most recently won second and third prize at the Hamilton Wood Show. Jim is now ready to share his passion with the community and hopes to display his carvings publicly.

This three dimensional effect brings viewers closer to my work where they can see the great intricacies and workmanship of each painting. Opened in 1948 by Jimmie Clennell and Selma Caverly, Pinecroft is considered to be Canada’s oldest continuously operating pottery studio. Tucked away in a 54 acre pine forest, this thriving family-run establishment has produced fine quality earthenware and stoneware pottery for 64 years. Second generation studio potter Brenda (Caverly) Smith offers a wide range of functional pieces including complete dinner sets. High fired reduction ware is wheel thrown with some slab work. Classes and hands-on workshops are offered in fall and winter in the teaching studio. Pinecroft also features the work of Tony Clennell (MFA, RCA), who recently joined the studio as an associate potter. Tony is an adjunct professor at Sheridan College and has taught workshops in Canada, USA, Japan, China and Italy.

Since ancient times, beads have been used to adorn the body and clothes, and they where used in art as well. Embellishing hand-dyed and painted fabrics with beads has been an excit-ing journey of discovery and growth for Rose as a bead and textile artist. She is in constant search of ways to bring together her love of beads, fibre, and fabric. From an intricate piece of jewellery, to embellishing hand-painted cloth, beads will always be a source of inspiration for Rose’s artwork. [email protected] Reid has been an artist since high school and he is also an accomplished musician. Robert’s work has been entered and juried into many shows and venues. After winning a citywide United Appeal poster contest Robert realized that his work was good enough to sell! Encouraged by many friends, teachers, and his wife Yvonne, Robert has continued painting for many years. Robert concentrated on working in Oils in the 1950’s, Acrylics in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Pen and Ink, Charcoal and Mixed Media in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In 2000 Robert became a member of Art Circle in London and started paint-ing in Watercolour, which is now his favourite medium. June-Anne enjoys painting realistic images and landscapes, may they be real or imaginary, but her real love lies in abstracts. Taking her brushes to canvas her thoughts and feelings are transformed to become much more than shapes and images. She often begins with a scene or a colour scheme in mind, mostly from a memory or feeling that has touched her. As the work progresses, the painting emerges. It is from these beginnings that she enhances her fi nished product. During this creative process she often steps back, putting the painting at the \’end of the hall\’, so to speak, and from a distance seeks out the possibilities of what that art could become. This inspires June-Anne to enhance the painting with ideas that emerge from within, or what feels right. She frequently names her paintings to encourage the viewer to look deeper and become more involved with her work. June-Anne, one of the fi ve partners who opened the Art Emporium in Port Stanley this year, proudly displays her work along with the other 31 Boathouse Members in the Art Emporium Boathouse Gallery. In my work I try to capture fleeting memories or reflective moments in time. Those colors and feelings of forgotten days. The warmth of the sun on my face or the way it dances across the water or through the trees. These are the moments that fill my soul and influence my work. The wind, rain and sun constantly pound, wear and reshape all that we see. I approach my work with techniques that mimic these elements. I paint on mahogany plywood so I can scratch, burn, carve, sand and stain my way through a piece as I break down and weather the wood. The worn textures compliment not only the beauty of wood and nature, but Mother Earth and our experiences with her.
