Fiela se kindWie ken nie hierdie storie van die wit kind in die bruin familie nie? En wanneer hy dan weg geneem word, begin Benjamin Komoetie se soeke na homself, en Fiela se poging om haar kind terug te kry.

In hierdie baie spesiale skoleproduksie word daar ook van ons jong, ontluikende talent ingespan om die storie te vertel. Leerders wat buitengewoon presteer het in die Nasionale Toneelspelkompetisie gaan van die rolle in die produksie vul. Nicole Holm, wat die rol van Benjamin se ma gaan vertolk in hierdie weergawe van die boek, sê sy is verheug oor die geleentheid. “Daar was detyds, toe ek net klaar geswot het, ’n Fiela waarvoor ek on-suksesvol oudisie het, so dan wil mens dit mos nou ekstra graag hê. En ek het vergeet hoe mooi boek dit is. Ek het dit nou weer, eerste keer in jare, gelees.” Sy is ook baie opgewonde om weer met Juanita Swanepoel, die regisseur, saam te werk. “Nita was een van die eerste regisseurs waarmee ek gewerk het en ek glo nou nog die bruikbare in my toolkit as aktrise, het ek by haar gekry.” In 1999 word Fiela se kind, ná ’n meningsopname by biblioteke landswyd om die 100 gewildste boeke aan te wys, as die Afrikaanse boek van die eeu bekroon.

A dreaded leader of a local gang gets parole after seven years in jail. Everybody wonders whether Map has changed – or if he still is the old Map they knew before. The drama is set shortly after the forced removals from Cape Town to the Flats. It investigates the influence that social evils have on the community. It gives us a glimpse into the lives of the uprooted, their love and pain and their desper-ate yearning for a better life. The award-winning Adam Small’s Krismis van Map Jacobs touches on social issues suchas unemployment and poverty – still relevant today – as well as the search for identity and forgive-ness. Krismis van Map Jacobs focuses on the scars left by Apartheid on the Cape coloured commu-nity. The lead role of Map Jacobs will be played by Maurice Paige, who plays the character of Calvin in the South African TV drama, Isidingo.

A police detective stationed in Port Elizabeth is investigating a private and personal matter. This case takes him back to the village where he and the woman he married came from. His visit there coincides with the double funeral of a couple that were mysteriously murdered in Johannesburg. Adultery, deceit and lies are just some of the ingredients of this intriguing tale. His investigation takes him to Johannesburg, then to Swaziland and back to Port Elizabeth. As he is trying to solve the mys-tery, he stumbles across the evidence he was looking for in the first place.

The legendary play writer, director and actor Dr. John Kani will present his Setwork Nothing But The Truth and his play Missing… Dr. Kani is making his debut directing and acting at the Artscape for the first time in his career. This will not only be a historical moment for us as a Theatre Centre but after every performance of Nothing But The Truth, Dr. Kani comes on stage to engage with teachers and students around the text of the play. Missing… is also a celebration of his life’s work which will run concurrently with the Setwork production. We are indeed making history!

Nothing But The TruthThis acclaimed drama by John Kani tells the story of two brothers; Themba who went into exile dur-ing the apartheid years and died there, whilst Sipho stayed in South Africa. Don’t miss this warm and unique South African play about sibling rivalry, unfinished business, politics and ultimately, reconcilia-tion. Nothing But the Truth is a thought provoking story of our recent past, a historical education of Apart-heid and the struggle for freedom of our people. The play is about a man coming to terms with the past by letting out every bit of resentment and hatred about the past, which he has been harbouring within. It is a direct play about how some people saw the TRC as an excuse that allowed people who were guilty of all sorts of crimes against humanity to be set free without paying the price.

John Kani’s Missing...

Well-known director Janice Honeyman once again teams with Kani for his latest hit play. The story follows the life of Robert Khalipa (played by Kani) who has been living in exile in Stockholm, Swe-den, for over 30 years with his wife, Anna Olson (Susan Danford) and their daughter Ayanda (Buhle Ngaba). Anna has inherited her father’s large electronic and communications company and Ayanda is a young doctor working in a hospital in Stockholm. Something that Robert has been waiting for all his life in exile has finally happened: Mandela has been released. South Africa is on the road to democracy. Going home has become a reality. Instead of a celebration, this new situation becomes the cancer that threatens to break the Khalipha family apart. To add insult to injury, Robert is not called home by the ANC to be part of the negotia-tions and the country’s future. What follows is a plot full of intrigue, lies, backstabbing, conspiracy and political in-fighting. A young comrade, Peter Tshabalala (played by Apollo Ntshoko) is Robert’s assist-ant in the ANC office in Stockholm and he plays an important role in the isolation of Robert by the organisation. How can the release of Nelson Mandela be the reason for this family’s break up? Missing … premiered at the Baxter Theatre in 2014 and has been performed to great acclaim in Jo-hannesburg and Pretoria and has just returned to Cape Town following its success at the Iberoameri-can Festival in Bogota, Columbia.
