2011-12 Community arts series

Hanover College is proud to offer another season of outstanding cultural arts events to the Madison/Hanover community and surrounding region. This will be the 59th continuous season in which Hanover College’s Community Arts Series (CAS) has brought nationally and internationally renowned performing artists and guest speakers to our campus to entertain and enrich the cultural life of southeastern Indiana. The 2011-2012 year promises to continue this historical and rich tradition, and we deeply appreciate the supporting sponsorship of River Valley Financial Bank, the college’s presenting partner in this year’s Community Arts Series.

Our upcoming 2011-12 season leads off on Homecoming Weekend with the national touring, hit musical revue, “The Water Coolers,” a musical comedy satire about life in an office and the things we share around the water coolers. Other CAS offerings this year will include the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and a one-man play built on the life of Vince Van Gogh, performed by our own theater professor and equity actor, Jim Stark. This season also features two free Young People’s Concerts for area school groups, made possible by generous local underwriting from Arvin Sango, Grote Industries, Inc., Chandler Chevrolet.

In February we will host Garrison Keillor, host of “A Prairie Home Companion” and best-selling author. Get your tickets early for this one!

The Hanover Theatre productions, along with our vocal and instrumental concerts and recitals, showcase some of the best young performance talent in the country! Meanwhile, the Greiner Art Gallery sponsors exhibits from nationally and locally known artists, as well as our own faculty and students.

Mark your colander for one of my favorite evenings, “The President Honors the Arts,” April 7, a celebration of some of our finest student creative talent of the past year. It is an evening of sheer delight! “Bravo!” is a gala reception that precedes the performance to honor and thank our donors to the arts at Hanover College. I hope you will be among them this year, and that I will have the opportunity to thank you personally for your support.

Please look through this brochure and mark the outstanding events that you, your family and your friends would like to attend. I know you will find plenty for all to enjoy, as the curtain rises once again on the beautiful Hanover College campus!

Kicking off the Homecoming Weekend festivities will be the 59th Community Arts Series season opener -- the national touring, hit musical revue, The Water Coolers, a laugh-out-loud musical comedy satire about life in an office and the things we share around the water coolers of American

everyday life — work, kids, husbands and wives, getting ahead, falling behind — and trying to balance it all. With original songs, sketch comedy, and pop parodies, you’re sure to enjoy this comedic take on the workaday world of the American office!

Suitable for the whole family!

The Starling Ensemble combines the unique talents of two of North America’s finest chamber music instrumentalists with a group of world-class students from the renowned Indiana university Jacobs School of Music. The ensemble, co-directed by professor of violin Alexander Kerr together with Eric Kim, professor of cello, performs works from the great classics of the chamber music repertoire. The students come from both graduate and undergraduate ranks. According to Kerr, they’re among the very best, chosen for being totally comfortable on their instruments so the players can

focus on artistic engagement. Since its formation in 2009, the Starling Ensemble has performed widely, including engagements and concert series in Indiana and Florida, as well as on the Iu campus.

effect becoming a one-man-combo of unique and exotic instruments from all over the world. As he takes his audience on a fascinating tour of many countries and their diverse styles of music, Green intersperses his playing with entertaining and informative explanations of the music and the instruments.

Paint your palette blue and gray...

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream...

What happens when you travel the world only to see what you’ve missed? After a lifetime of wandering, artist Emile Bernard plans one last trip. As he prepares, he recalls his friendship with Vincent van Gogh, looks down the roads not taken and finally hears what Vincent tried to say...

Jim Stark stars in the one-man show, “Seeing Red,” a drama built on the life of painter Vince Van Gogh, written by David Loehr. This production travelled to the South Carolina Repertory Company on Hilton Head Island in April 2010.

vinegar tom by Caryl Churchill directed by Tom Evans

How can I destroy you by telling a lie? Feminist writer Caryl Churchill tells a shocking story of women accused of witchcraft in 17th century England and the male privilege that makes accusations deadly. Her scenes of humor, brutality and violence are interspersed with songs in this unforgettable play by one of England’s greatest living playwrights. In addition to violence, the play includes frank sexuality and is for adults only. Directed by guest artist and Professor Emeritus of Theatre Tom Evans.

Cryptos by James Wylder directed by Mark fearnow

Monster hunter Adric Ramses and his faithful assistant Wendy are searching Loch Ness when called upon to solve a darker mystery. Who is stealing the children of an isolated Iowa village? Adric has a foreboding: a creature known as the Wolf of Heaven. Intrigue, fantasy, poetry and humor intertwine in this fascinating new play by Hanover College senior, James Wylder.

tHree poets by Romulus Linney directed by Jim Stark

Obsessed by writers, American playwright Romulus Linney (1930-2011) crafted plays about writers ranging from Lord Byron to Oscar Wilde in his energetic and fertile career. “Three Poets” is a trio of plays, called by critic Mel Gussow, “small in scale, but rippling with poetic intensity.” Three women poets — Komachi in 9th-century Japan, Hrotsvitha in medieval Germany and Anna Akhmatova in Stalinist Russia — fight the conventions and powers of their times. The play is both funny and moving.

2 plays From tHe spanisH golDen age by Miguel de Cervantes & Calderon de la Barca

directed by Paul hildebrand The evening begins with a hilarious short comedy by the prolific and beloved author of Don Quixote. What will the good people see when the puppet show comes to their town — a world of wonders or only their own folly?

Calderon’s masterpiece was centuries ahead of its time. This swashbuckling story of love, deception and revenge opened new worlds for theater to explore. Is your life really happening — or is it all only a dream? Or just a play on a stage? Hanover College Theatre presents this unforgettable play by the prodigious soldier, priest and playwright Calderon for the first time ever in a riveting contemporary adaptation.

Hosted by the Rivers Institute at Hanover College, all ages, levels of experience and media are welcome! The event is free! Hanover College’s 650-acre campus offers views of “The Point,” the only place to see three bends in the Ohio River. We’re also home to streams, meadows, waterfalls and Georgian style architecture.
