Helping Kendall HealA GiveForward fundraising

campaign for East Hampton local

Kendall Bahns is being held. Funds raised will go to support her treatment for her lifelong battle with PTSD, eating disorders and depression. Bahns now resides in California. The goal is to raise $10,000 to send her to an in-patient program in Torrance, California at Del Amo Hospital. Del Amo Hospital is ranked number one in the country for a PTSD rehabilitation center and is the only one located in California.

The GiveForward website states, “She has secretly, and sometimes publically, battled with PTSD, eating disorders and clinical depression for the entirety of her lifetime. Kendall is now seeking help after acknowledging her struggles, and recent suicide attempts, which resulted in hospitalization. She is currently in dire need of mental help, rehabilitation, medical treatment and support from doctors and loved ones. At this point, it is far beyond what out-patient treatment can accomplish, and we are looking to secure a stay at an in-patient facility.”

To donate visit www.giveforward.com and search Helping Kendall Heal.

It’s that quiet time of year on the East End . . . unless you head over to the Amagansett Library on Saturday nights in January. There kids are kicking the winter blues as Crossroads Music and the Library present Teen Music Month.

Music by teens for teens is on the menu with some of the best young performers and bands in town performing free for their peers . . . and any older folks who want to tag along.

Last Saturday night, those with a yen for tunage packed the library’s community room to hear Sag Harbor’s Sara Hartman, Clark² --

By Teens And For Teens

Clark Hamilton and Jackson Clark -- plus Method 2 Madness, a group of youthful musicians (Yori Johnson, Rick Nardo, Thomas Bennett, and Jackson Clark) from East Hampton and Amagansett who’ve been together since 2010.

This week, vocalist Skylar Kelleher will perform originals and covers. She picked up a guitar four years ago at the age of 12 and has been playing it ever since. She enjoys writing her own songs and covering the songs of others, but, according to a bio provided by organizers, mostly she just likes playing before a live crowd.

Also on the bi l l is Supply Side comprised of members of the East Hampton High School jazz band. They’ve got some originals to play, and covers, too. Rounding out the evening, Spectors makes its debut playing good ol rock and roll.

The following Saturday night, on January 18, teens can give voice to the musical instrument they were born with thanks to a free vocal lesson with Christine Cadarette. Cadarette studied at SUNY Fredonia and with Marshal Williamson at the Juilliard School. She’s been involved in several Broadway Shows ranging

from Beauty and the Beast to Little Shop of Horrors. She’s worked with Broadway stars such as Nathan Lane, Sutton Foster, and Joel Grey plus rock artists including Roger Daltrey, Natalie Cole, and Jackson Browne.

And once participants have been inspired and instructed, they’re invited to perform at the month’s culminating performance – an open mic held January 25. Acoustic, voice and poetry welcome, with sign ups starting at 6 PM. As with all the events this month, the music starts at 7 PM.

It may be the dead of winter, but the library and local music mecca plan to liven things up for the 13 to 19 year old crowd. The collaboration between Crossroads, which offers music instruction and has cultivated a slew of area artists including some slated to perform, and the library, which is committed to supporting local talent and culture, is a match made in music heaven.

Say organizers Michael Clark and Cynthia Young, “Teens are passionate about their music and we want to encourage our teens.”

“Our local young talent always has a tough time finding places to play or to listen to other performers. This is a great opportunity for them put forward by the Amagansett Library. Kudos to their progressive ideas,” added Clark. “At Crossroads Music, we jumped at the chance to re-kindle working with teen bands so it was a natural fit. We think it will be a lot of fun.”

New To TheatersThe Wolf Of Wall Street (R)

Martin Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio reunite yet again in this black comedy about an over-the - top 1980’s stockbroker who is a forerunner to the wheelers a n d d e a l e r s w h o c a u s e d t h e f i n a n c i a l

meltdown two decades later. Apart from being overly long (three hours), this film is brimming with action, a morality tale that is at times riveting, at times hilarious, and often just plain ugly. The guess here is both director and star will receive Oscar nominations, as will Jonah Hill. Also starring Matthew McConaughey and Kyle Chandler.

Coming SoonJack Ryan Shadow Recruit (PG-

13) January is typically a bad month for new releases – any film with even decent reviews is rushed to release before the end of the year to qualify for the Academy Awards and to take advantage of the holiday week box office.

By those standards, this film, starring Tom Clancy’s ever-ready special agent, finds Jack Ryan uncovering a n i n t e r n a t i o n a l financial scandal in the wake of 9-11. Chris Pine (Star Trek) stars in the title role – remember when Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise got these roles? The cast is a good one – Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Davis Paymer co-star – and Pine makes for a passable protagonist. You could do worse on a cold winter’s night.

New On DVDCBGB a fictional account of the

Lower East Side club that became ground zero for the emerging NYC punk rock scene in the early 1970s. It’s kind of silly, the casting doesn’t work, but the music is great (If you like that sort of thing). Add a star if the safety clips in your lip and eyebrows caused a disfiguring infection.

Several years ago I had the opportunity to teach 11 and 12-year-olds a beginning bridge course. After just a few lessons, I gave four of them the task of making up an interesting bridge hand. Then they had to bid the

Let’s Let’s Let’s Let’s Play Bridge

By George Aman

created hand and, finally, to play it. I was not surprised to see them

create the hand listed here. Each of the four thought they could contract for all 13 tricks and easily make it.

Lisa, who sat South, was not

to be outbid by East who had bid 7S and thus Lisa bid 7N. She had remembered that no-trump was the highest-ranking denomination but had forgotten that she would not be on lead.

When West led the ace of diamonds, Lisa looked perplexed. She realized that she could not trump the first trick. Then West led the king of diamonds and Lisa’s eyes grew huge.

She suddenly realized that she would not win a single trick. Having a good sense of humor, she stated that she must have set a record for the worst outcome in all of bridge history.

Those of us who play and love the game of bridge have a great deal to be thankful for at this time of year. In particular, I would like to acknowledge and thank Kathie McLauchlen who, along with her husband Jim, built the Water Mill

Bridge Club. In doing so, she created

outstanding opportunities for all dedicated players to play several times a week all year round. The club is up-to-date in every aspect of the game. Each game lasts for about three hours but feels like 20 minutes have passed from beginning to end.

There are others on the South Fork who have worked tirelessly to promote bridge through teaching, directing, and playing this most challenging and exciting card game. I think of such folks as Duke Morell and Rose Deleonardis who ran games for the last several years in the East Hampton/Montauk area.

But no one has made the impact that Kathie has with her determination to create and run her outstanding facility. Thanks, Kathie, for your contributions to all dedicated duplicate bridge players.

Soy Ginger Glazed Chicken with Soba Noodles & Peanut Sauce

MethodTo make the marinade, put the

juice from the orange, shallot, garlic, soy sauce, ginger chili paste, miso paste, and vegetable oil in a blender cup and blend on high to a smooth dressing like consistency.

Marinate the chicken breasts in half of the marinade and save the rest. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil, then add a few pinches of salt and the curry powder. Cook the soba noodles in the boiling seasoned water for six to

eight minutes. Strain and reserve some of the

cooking liquid. Set the pasta to the side while you grill your chicken.

Grill the marinated chicken breasts on medium high heat for about five minutes on each side. Brush the breasts with some of the remaining marinade.

To make the peanut sauce, heat 1/3 cup of the leftover cooking liquid from the soba noodles in a small sauce pan. Whisk in the peanut butter and 1/4 cup of the remaining marinade. Toss the soba noodles in the sauce. Slice the chicken breasts. Plate and enjoy.
