Anomalytakesathought‐provokinginsider'slookatmultiracialidentitybycombiningpersonalnarrativeswiththelargerdramaofmixedraceinAmericanculture.Featuredintervieweesusespokenwordandmusictotelltheirstories.Communityleadersandacademicexperts,includingJenChau’99,providecontextandanalysis.Asitunfolds,AnomalytellsastorythatisdeeplypersonalyetbroadlyAmerican.AnomalywontheLangstonHughesAfricanAmericanFilmFestival’sLocalFilmmakerAwardinSeattleinApril2010,andwasfeaturedintheBestoftheAfricanDiasporaFilmFestivalinBrooklyninFebruary2010.ClicktowatchtheAnomalytrailer.

ChauisfounderandexecutivedirectorofSwirl,Inc.,anationalcommunityorganizationfoundedin2000thatservesthemixed‐racecommunity.AsastudentatWellesley,ChauservedCollegeGovernmentasthemulticulturalaffairscoordinator.

Alleventsinour“Empower”seriesthisfallaredesignedtobringasmuchenergyandcommitmenttotheethicsofdifferenceandinclusiononourcampusasisgeneratedaround,say,social

cosponsoredbyArtsandHumanitiesDivisionasAHFperformer,requiredforallstudentsEmmanuelJalwasborninwar‐tornSudan,andwhilehedoesn’tknowexactlywhen,hebelievesitwasintheearly1980s.Hewastakenfromhisfamilyhomein1987whenhewassixorsevenyearsold,andsenttofightwiththerebelarmyinSudan’sbloodycivilwar.Fornearlyfiveyears,hewasa“childwarrior,”putintobattlecarryinganAK‐47thatwastallerthanhewas.Bythetimehewas13,hewasaveteranoftwocivilwarsandhadseenhundredsofhisfellowchildsoldiersreducedtotakingunspeakablemeasuresastheystruggledtosurviveonthekillingfieldsofSouthernSudan.Afteraseriesofharrowingevents,hewasrescuedbyaBritishaidworker(EmmaMcCune)whosmuggledhimintoNairobitoraisehimasherown.”

AconversationwithSarifaRhodes‐PittsandSarahBroomaboutHarlemandNewOrleans

In1968,thepoetGwendolynBrookspublishedabooklengthworkcalled"IntheMecca."Init,aninnercitymothersearchesforherchildinanurbanhousingproject.Inthisprogram,thewritersSharifaRhodes‐PittsandSarahBroomdiscusstheirinterestintwocommunitiesthatarecloselyidentifiedwithpeopleofcolor:HarlemandthecityofNewOrleans.AsaNewOrleansnative,BroomwilldiscusstheaftereffectsofHurricaneKatrinaonthecity'scurrentstatusandthedispossessed;Rhodes‐Pitts,whocurrentlyresidesinNewOrleans,willreadfrom,andcommenton,herbook,HarleminNowhere,ameditativeaccountofherlifeinNewYork's"blackmecca."TheirconversationwillbemoderatedbyNoahChasin,anarthistorianfromBardCollege,whoseresearchfocusesontheintersectionofhumanrightsandurbancontexts.

SharifaRhodes‐PittsisawriterwhoseworkhasappearedinTransition,TheNewYorkTimes,andTheBostonGlobe.ShehasreceivedawardsfromtheRonaJaffeFoundation,theLannanFoundation,andtheNewYorkFoundationfortheArts.OriginallyfromHouston,Texas,shegraduatedin2000fromHarvardUniversityandwasaFulbrightScholarintheUnitedKingdom.SharifaiswritingatrilogyonAfrican‐Americansandutopia;herfirstbook,HarlemisNowhere,waspublishedin2011byLittle,Brown&Company.SarahM.BroomisaNewOrleansnativewhoseessayshaveappearedinTheNewYorkTimesMagazine,TheOxfordAmerican,O,TheOprahMagazineandelsewhere.ShehasworkedasSeniorWriterforMayorC.RayNaginafterHurricaneKatrinaandmostrecentlyservedasExecutiveDirectorofVillageHealthWorks,aNewYork‐basedinternationalnon‐profitthatprovideshealthcaretoBurundi'spoorest.Ms.BroomiscurrentlyatworkonTheYellowHousewhichwillbepublishedbyGrovein2013.BroomlivesinHarlem.

BabsonCollegepresents“LoopsandStrips,”NewPaintingsbyNataliyaBregel,basedonvideofootagefromhertravels.Sheshootsfootageinbothpublicanddomesticenvironments,observingunfoldinginteractionsbetweenfriendsandfamilyorgroupsofstrangers.

Bregelselectsagroupofstillshotsfromthevideo,whichshethenpaintsontothinhorizontalpanelsandmorerecently,theinteriorsofhoops,shownhereforthefirsttime.Theinteriorsurfacesofthelargewoodenhoopsallowtheviewertobecomeimmersedinthesepaintingspaces.

Intheirscale,palette,andtouch,theseserialpaintingscreateanintimateviewingenvironmentwithinterestingparallelsandcontraststoourincreasinglyscreenderivedexperienceswhethertheyarrivethroughlaptop,tablet,orsmart‐phone.

Thepaintings’filmicqualitiesmovetheviewerthroughtheirnarratives,whiletheartist’spainterly

strokesmovebetweendeepexplorationsandlightdrawing.Whilelifeatthescreencompelsmultitasking,thesenearminiaturesasktheviewertoslowdownandcontemplatetheselectedmomentsunfoldinginthepaintings.
