Describing himself as magpie in hisapproach to his art, Frame is also a romantic inthe way he engages his artistic sensibility, always striving to strip away the heaviness of ascene, be it in a landscape or figurativepainting.

William Miller Frazer RSA (1864-1961) Anniversary ExhibitionAnyone who has visited Scotlandstraditional art galleries over the yearswill no doubt be familiar with thename, if not the work, of WilliamMiller Frazer. His prolific landscapework is known for its impressioniststyle, capturing the sentiment andmood of rural days of the late 19thand early 20th centuries.

For the 2011 Festival Exhibition theAnthony Woodd Gallery features scenes byFrazer, including from East Lothian,Perthshire, Venice and the English Fens. The variety of his landscapes reflects histravels and his love of the countryside, ranging from the gentleness of an EastLothian farm in summer to the snowy wintermoorlands of Perthshire.

These Scottish works are not huge, romantic interpretations of the drama of thescenery, but rather smaller, intimate

Five Centuries of Scottish PortraitureThis exhibition begins with DavidAllans The Origin of Painting, whichplaces portraiture at the centre of thestory of art since the Renaissance.Among the earliest portraits featuredis The Earl and Countess of Wigton(1625) by Adam de Colone.

Allan Ramsay affirmed the place ofportraiture at the heart of the ScottishEnlightenment, as demonstrated inthe three lady portraits shown. DavidMartin was Ramsays pupil and he isrepresented by the portrait of CharlesKerr of Calderbank.

Sir Henry Raeburn, whose portrait ofAlexander Munro is one of the outstandingpieces in the exhibition, is also shown aswell as his successor, John Watson Gordon, with an oval portrait of Adam Wilson.

Portraiture survived the competition ofphotography at the turn of the 20th centuryas the art form of choice, as reflected in the

Richard Demarco &Joseph BeuysRichard Demarcocollaborated with JosephBeuys over a period of 16years (from 1970 to 1986)after first meeting him inDsseldorf. Demarco invitedBeuys to Scotland, togetherwith 34 other artistsidentified with Dsseldorf, which was then still in West Germany anddivided from East Germany by the Iron Curtain.

Joseph Beuys was the first of these artists tovisit Scotland, which he regarded as theheartland of the Celtic world. He was thereforewilling to explore the fabled world of The Roadto The Isles from Edinburgh towards thelegendary Hebridean land of Fingal and his son,Ossian, which had inspired Shakespeare towrite Macbeth.

The journey resulted in what is regarded as aBeuysian masterwork, Celtic Kinloch Rannoch:

Joseph Beuys and Richard Demarco at EdinburghCollege of Art, 1970

The Scottish Symphony. Beuys returned toScotland seven more times to find inspiration inwhat he regarded as the key to Celtic Europe.

This exhibition consists of works by Beuysinspired by Scotland along with watercolours byRichard Demarco and what has been recentlydefined as his event photography.

Demarcos contribution reveals the nodalpoints on what he now calls The Road toMeikle Seggie, a road travelled through manycenturies by the followers of Saint Columbaand the Roman legionaries.

The exhibition therefore tells the story of howBeuys was inspired by the reality of theRomano-Celtic cultural heritage of Europe, while Demarcos watercolours, bothtownscapes and landscapes, and eventphotographs are inspired by what is easilyidentified as the drovers road.
