It was another busy summer season for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), attaining monthly record highs in both passenger throughput and air traffic movements of 5.6 million and 32,395 in August respectively.
Not only is HKIA one of the world’s busiest airports, it is also one of the largest employers in Hong Kong. It contributes to the Hong Kong job market by directly employing over 65,000 people. This number almost triples when indirect and induced jobs are taken into account. Together, they represent over 5% of the workforce in Hong Kong.
We have recently completed the latest Report on HKIA Workforce Survey, which covers around 400 companies operating at the airport. The report shows that over 70% of employees currently working at the airport belong to the skilled and low-skilled sectors, reflecting HKIA’s significant contributions to the employment needs of Hong Kong. Our business partners anticipate that to cope with their expansion plans, there will be a 20% growth of the workforce over the next three years, of which more than half will also go to these sectors.
We always encourage and attract residents of the neighbouring communities to come work at the airport. I am glad to learn that currently close to half of our workforce resides in the nearby Tung Chung, Islands, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing and Tuen Mun districts. To recruit more people from these communities to work at HKIA, we have been working with different communities around the airport to actively promote job opportunities at HKIA. For instance, in September we participated in a job fair organised by the Federation of All Sectors of Tsuen Wan Community, providing a platform for the district’s residents to learn more about the job openings at HKIA, ranging from aircraft maintenance and airport security to customer service and ground handling operations.
We received more than 3,000 enquiries at the job fair and it was especially heartening to see a good number of young applicants opting for a career in the aviation industry. This was similar to what we saw in another recent job fair organised by Job Market magazine where many young people showed interest in aviation-related opportunities.
To fill vacancies that exist and to cope with future expansion needs, we will continue to promote career prospects at the airport with our business partners. We hope that through concerted efforts, the airport industry will continue to recruit the right people to support the successful long-term development of aviation in Hong Kong.
A group of young artists unleashed their creativity at the International Children Painting Competition in Hong Kong 2012/13 held at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 28 August. As one of the on-site painting locations for the second phase of the competition, 80 talented artists from 15 countries and regions demonstrated their drawing skills at Terminal 1 and the SkyDeck to bring to life the iconic landmarks and diverse scenes at the airport with brushstrokes and colours.
Organised by the Promotion of Young Artists Foundation, the competition was open to emerging local and international artists between 12 to 18 years old. Its aim is to strengthen international art and cultural connections, as well as provide an opportunity for the youth to express their creativity through painting.
Young artists were enthusiastic to have the acclaimed architecture of HKIA as their subject for the competition. Chai Thing Ong from Malaysia noted, “The airport is very big and the design is very special. I am very impressed with it.” Meanwhile, Kwong Ho Long from Hong Kong said, “HKIA is very grand with a unique roof design that could not be seen elsewhere.”
Following the drawing session, a panel of 12 international judges immediately reviewed all entries to select the winners of the day. With a unique take on HKIA’s expansive terminals, Aleksandra Agnieszka Lysiak from Poland stood out to take home the “Best of the Day” honours. In addition, four other exceptional paintings were awarded with the “Merit of the Day” accolade.
The Airport Authority (AA) also presented special awards to two outstanding drawings that caught the judges’ eyes. One of the awarded artworks vividly captured the green features of the airport in a lively manner, while another drawing portrayed a passenger sitting alone at the Departures Hall which reflected the candid emotions that can be seen at the airport.

WINNING A RETURN TRIP TO HKIA得獎者再次參觀 香港國際機場
EDUCATING FUTURE LEADERS未來領袖到機場學習
Lessons in aviation provided a change of pace for a group of 12 young people from RTHK’s Young Politician training programme, who visited Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 24 August. Atop their educational day at the airport was a tour of the airport’s comprehensive green initiatives, including the food waste processor and the greywater treatment plant. The visit sparked their interest on aviation, as well as broadening their knowledge of airport operations behind the scenes.
Arranging educational visits to HKIA is an important initiative of the AA to broaden the horizons of younger generations on airport operations and future developments. Throughout the year, a number of visits were arranged for secondary school students, after which they were encouraged to share their airport experience through text, photos or drawings in the HKIA Educational Visit Sharing Programme. This year, a total of 68 entries were received, among which 20 were selected as winning teams.
On 29 August, participants of winning teams enjoyed a return trip to HKIA. During the welcome luncheon, AA General Manager, Airfield Henry Ma and AA General Manager, Terminal 1 Vivian Cheung welcomed the students on behalf of HKIA and a slideshow of the winning entries was displayed to share students’ thoughts on the airport after their first visit. Highlights of the day included an airside tour of the Integrated Airport Centre, Baggage Handling System, the fixed ground power and pre-conditioned air systems, allowing the students to get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes operations at the airport.
HKIA’s continuous growth over the years has also meant that there are more job opportunities at the airport. To help job seekers in neighbouring communities explore their prospects in the airport and aviation industry, the Airport Authority (AA) co-organised a recruitment day with the Federation of All Sectors of Tsuen Wan Community on 28 September.
Around 3,100 job seekers turned up at the Luk Yeung Galleria where the AA and business partners offered a wide range of entry-level and non-technical job vacancies which were particularly suitable for young applicants. Onsite applications and enquiries at the recruitment booths provided a convenient way for candidates to immediately gauge their potential in working at the airport. Also at the venue, the AA held an exhibition showcasing the operations and future developments of HKIA.

The Airport Ambassadors Farewell & Welcome Ceremony was staged on 28 August to recognise the efforts and dedication of 25 current Ambassadors, 12 Ambassador Leaders and 2 Ambassador Supervisors who participated in the Airport Ambassador Programme (AAP) last year, as well as to welcome the new batch of Airport Ambassadors, Leader and Supervisors to their roles.
Co-organised by the Airport Authority (AA), Labour Department and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the AAP provides on-the-job training for young individuals who aspire to embark on careers in the airport and aviation industry. Throughout the programme, Airport Ambassadors undergo training in areas including airport operations, customer service and communication skills.
Speaking at the ceremony, AA Executive Director, Airport Operations C K Ng, Labour Department Commissioner W H Cheuk, and Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Council Member Kenneth Chen encouraged all ambassadors to utilise the experience gained at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to plan their careers.
During the ceremony, certificates of completion were presented to the current batch of the AAP. Some of them also received the “Best Action Learning Group”, “Best Mentor” and scholarships for their outstanding performance. Awardees then took to the stage to share their memorable experiences and lessons learned in the programme.
Since the launch of AAP in 2002, over 800 Airport Ambassadors and Ambassador Leaders have undergone training, with some moving on to work at the AA or in aviation-related industries upon graduation.
Jasmine Chung (Ambassador Leader) 鍾汶軒(領袖大使)Jasmine said she had always wanted to work in the aviation or travel industry, and decided to join the programme after completing her higher diploma. Jasmine’s exceptional performance even led to her promotion as a Supervisor. This year, she was also among the scholarship awardees. “This is my first job after graduation and this award has encouraged me to continue doing my best and work even harder,” she added.
Irene Tang (Airport Ambassador) 鄧詠欣 (機場大使) Despite attaining disappointing A-Level results, Irene discovered new goals in the AAP. Showcasing her devotion in the role of Airport Ambassador, she was awarded with a scholarship. “It was a fruitful experience in which I gained a better understanding of how to handle different situations. I plan to continue my studies after the AAP and hope to pursue my career in aviation in the future,” Irene said.

ENGINEERING ENHANCED FIRE RESISTANCE工程界就提升防火效能交流意見
AA Deputy Director, Projects Kevin Poole spoke at the “When Civil Engineers Meet Fire Engineers” seminar on 3 September. Organised by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the event brought together industry experts to share their ideas on fire safety designs for infrastructure projects.
Poole shared his experiences in managing HKIA’s Midfield Concourse Development. The Midfield Concourse, which spans over 100,000 square metres, presents a unique set of challenges in minimising fire risk. During his presentation, Poole explained how these difficulties were overcome, enhancing accessibility for fire rescue while maintaining overall design integrity.
As one of the busiest airports in the world, HKIA relies on its cutting-edge information technology systems to ensure clockwork operations at all times. Recently, AA Chief Information Officer Andy Bien was honoured in “The Outstanding Performance of IT Excellence 2013” organised by IT magazine e-zone for his exceptional achievements in introducing information technology innovation to the airport.
Among the innovations the AA has introduced is a system that allows Immigration officers and Airport Security staff to retrieve and decode passenger and flight information stored in mobile boarding passes. Not only does this provide support for their daily border control and security operations, but it also allows for a more convenient travelling experience for passengers, and reduces the need for paper boarding passes to protect the environment. In March 2013, HKIA launched the “My Flight” mobile app which provides travellers easier access to real-time flight information. Moving forward, HKIA will continue to integrate innovative IT solutions into its operations to create an even more pleasant airport experience to passengers.
At the peak of the summer season, it pays to keep your cool for a safer and more productive working environment. With this in mind, The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions Occupation Safety & Health Committee, The Staffs & Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines, Labour Department, Occupational Safety & Health Council and the AA jointly staged an informative event to promote heat stroke prevention in the workplace for 5,000 ground and aircraft cleaning staff at HKIA in August.
Participants took home not only the knowledge to combat heat stroke at the workplace, but also souvenirs consisting of towels, water bottles and leaflets.

Surplus food at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), is now being put to good use, thanks to the AA’s support of the Food Angel programme.
Food Angel secured support from the HKIA Environmental Fund to buy and operate a refrigerated truck to collect unused food that would otherwise be wasted from caterers, airline lounges and other business partners at the airport neighbourhood including Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (HACTL), The Gallery in Cathay City and AsiaWorld-Expo. The food will be served to underprivileged communities.
Food Angel is eager to hear from other members of the airport community who would like to participate in this food donation programme. Please contact the AA’s Environment Department at 2188 7264 or Food Angel at 2801 5333 for more details.
The AA released its first sustainability report entitled “Sustaining our Capacity – Our Blueprint for Shared Growth” on 30 August. Prepared with reference to globally recognised guidelines, the report reviews the AA’s sustainability performance and initiatives in three areas: safety and security, economy, and quality of life.
During the 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2013 period, the AA achieved tangible results in all three aspects, with a record low injury rate, increased revenues, and improved environmental performance. The AA will continue to implement a range of sustainability targets and measures with its business partners and other stakeholders, with the aim of fulfilling HKIA’s goal of becoming the world’s greenest airport.
