About the ArrangementFrench composer and violinist Jean Baptiste Senaillé (1687-1730), wrote Allegro Spiritoso to serve as the introduction to his Violin Sonata No. 5, one of an estimated 50 violin sonatas he composed during his lifetime. Senaillé was a member of the orchestra at the French courts of King Louis XIV the Great and King Louis XV the Beloved. During this time, he traveled to Italy, where he studied under Vitali. His compositions became notable for incorporating aspects of the Italian conventions he learned with his familiar French style. Allegro Spiritoso has survived as the most popular of Senaillé’s works, having been transcribed for a variety of instruments and consistently featured in contest and festival repertoire.
In this arrangement by Robert S. Frost, the string orchestra provides a rich and energetic accompaniment for the virtuosic, yet accessible, solo part. The multiple solo options of violin, viola, or cello, are all arranged in the key of D Minor, thus using the same accompaniment and allowing directors a great deal of flexibility within one orchestration. The optional piano part may be included with the orchestra accompaniment, or used as the sole accompaniment in recital, contest, or festival settings. True to its title, Allegro Spiritoso is a lively and upbeat addition to any concert program.
