MUSIC ARTICLE - DOUBLE PAGE
Jul 26, 2015
Main Image:The main image in this double
page spread links to the title. As the word ‘FIERCELY’ links with
the make-up on Beyoncé’s face. Also, the costume links to the word ‘CREATIVE’. These words
relates to the main image as it is trying to send a message to the
audiences. The main image takes up one half of the double
page spread; this highlights that she is the centre of attention.
The shot is a median close up to show her facial expression to the audiences. The artist (Beyoncé)
is looking directly at the audiences which might show
that she wants to connect to the audience. There is a hint above
the picture credit which says ‘Woman Of The Year’, this could mean that Beyoncé’s picture is
in the article to let the audiences know that she is the
woman of the year.
Sub-Heading:The article shows the audience what might be included. Also, it
shows that Beyoncé is well-known to the audiences by putting a
median close up shot on the left page. The sub-heading is in black which says ‘Woman Of The Year’.
This highlights that Beyoncé is the woman of the year and that the audiences should know what she has achieved because Beyoncé is famous due to the fans. The sub-
heading is in black because then it creates a difference between the black and the white font used in
this article. Also, the black text can stand out and catch the audiences’
eyes.
Colour Scheme:In this article (double page spread), the company and the editor decided to put a
gradient colour in the background by using two colours, which are: pink and purple. They have used these two colours because those colours targets the females.
There is a hint in this article which is a main image of a famous American singer, Beyoncé. The top text is bold and white which makes it easier for the audiences to
read and catch their eye on the word ‘FIERCELY’. However, beneath the word ‘FIERCELY’, there is another text that says ‘CREATIVE’. This text is not bold which connotes that the word ‘CREATIVE’ is not as important as the word ‘FIERCELY’. In this article, there is only four colours. Normally in most of the music articles, the company decides to use only three colours which are red, black and white but in this article, they have used completely different colours to make the article itself
unique and also make it look interesting by having colours that have not been used before in any magazines. This technique can get a wider audience if they use male colours too but in my opinion, I personally think that this article is targeted at the
females.
Picture Credit:Beneath the heading, there is a
picture credit to show who capture the picture or maybe to tell the audience who designed
the article. The name of the person who captured the picture
or designed the article is in capital in white font so that it is
clearly for the audiences to understand. The texts are visible and can be noticed by anyone if they look at the article for the first time. The company or the
editor would not use the photographer’s or the editor’s name just like that. They could have used it maybe because he
is a freelance photographer/editor or someone
who is not yet famous. This technique gets the readers to
find out who took the main image and who designed the article. Overall, the picture credit does not take a lot of
space.
Texts:In this double page spread, the texts are in white so that it is easier for the audiences to notice that if they read this
article, they could find out more about the article. The only minus about this article is that the texts
are too small to read. With the small texts, the article does look professional but it is hard for the audiences to read what is said in
the paragraph. Looking close could be a way to read it but I
don’t think the audiences would like that.
TitleThe title of this article
reads ‘Unwind with Bashy’. This is used to make the
readers interested because the phrase ‘unwind with’ is in pink/red colour text. This
makes the article look simple and relaxing. But,
the word ‘Bashy’ is in block capitals, in a bold text and about twice the size of the first text. It comes across
quite direct and in the readers’ face as it wants the readers to know that this article is about the
artist Bashy who is a well-known rapper from
America.
InformationBelow the title, there is a
short paragraph. The content of this is to let the readers know a bit about
Bashy and his career. They added an element of
humour too by saying ‘A self-proclaimed don on FIFA: Road to World Cup
98’. This makes the readers see Bashy as a humorous person and that the article will be interesting. Also,
the two names mentioned in the paragraph are
highlighted n grey which are Bashy’s name and the name of the interviewer, ‘Danny Walker’. This is used to let the readers know who interviewed
Bashy
Colour SchemePink/red, black and white are the colours for this double page spread. I am glad to see a page using a pink/red
instead of just a plain red. I personally think by using pink as well as black and white would make the article more
unisex. It is surprising that this article used unique colours whereas, other article mainly focus on blue, yellow and
white. These colours were used to symbolize Christmas as there is a hint that says ‘Christmas is coming!’. This is why
the background of the main image is pink/red to give it a unique background and not use just red as it will bore the readers. This pink/red colour attracts both genders so this means that men and women can read this article and find
out more about Bashy who could be their inspiration.
Main ArticleI personally think that the main article on this double page spread is a good side, taking up nearly half of the
page. The main article starts with a large pink/red drop cap. This directs the
reader’s eyes to where the article starts and because it is an interview, it is made to look clear of what are
the questions and what are Bashy’s responds. They
have made the text of the questions pink/red and made the text of the
responses black., this helps the readers to know the
differences between question and answers.
They have used a mixture of two colours and a black because these colours are from the colour pallet and matches Bashy’s outfit.
Sub-InterviewAt the side of the main image, there is a sub-
interview on an unrelated topic. In this case, it is
asking him about Christmas. There is a hint that this
article was created during Christmas and also matches
the Christmas colours for example, red. We can see the text even though it is a layer on the image because it is displayed in white text
which is visible on the pink/red background. I
personally do not like the idea of it but it does fill some of the background
which I described as dead space. My only suggestion is
that the company who designed this article could
have made Bashy’s responses bigger so that the
readers can read it and understand it clearly.
Pull QuoteIn the centre of the double page spread, they have taken a quote from Bashy and made the text larger so the readers can see it clearly and also stands out from the test of the article. They could have done
this for the people who are flicking through the magazine and have the time to read larger texts and
if it is interesting then they would read the whole article about Bashy. In the pull quote, Bashy says that he is going to be in a film ‘next year’ which is
called ‘The Veteran’. This film stars Toby Kebbel who was in RocknRolla and Brian Cox who is in a million films. Bashy states his character by having a name called ‘Tyrone Jones’ in the film, The Veteran. This
quote tells us that Bashy is not just an artist but also an actor who is now working hard to act in upcoming films and this message lets his fans and the readers who reads magazines or articles know that Bashy is trying to amaze his fans by coming up with a new
career which is being an actor in films. The quote is very useful for the readers and Bashy’s fans as the
pull quote is sort of a information of what he is doing.
Artist RepresentationFlorence is featured in this
magazine. She is representing women as fierce and
independent. The use of the font is contracting with the
background by using an unique sense of clothing. The use of cloth proves that Florence is
loyal as she still is proud to be English. She has direct eyes
contact at the camera showing she is the mainly focusing to the readers and would make
the reader draw their attention to this article. This use of
technique is a way to get the readers to think about the article by thinking ahead.
Main ImageThe main image which is on the left hand side of the page is to attract the readers who reads articles. The reason why he
main image is on the left hand side is because the readers
flick the pages too quickly and the company wants the readers to read the article and then see the main image. This technique
is very useful as the readers can quickly flick through pages and see a long paragraph about Florence. The company’s idea
is to get the readers to read the article as it symbolizes that it is way more important then the
image of Florence which is placed on the left hand side of the article page. By putting the image on the left hand side, it can match the cover which has tow colours that are stripped (red and white). The image which takes up a whole one
page of the article so that the reader would not get shocked
by looking at the chunks of writing and get pull off reading
the article. The article itself looks short so that it can be easy for the readers to read
and also, can be quick for the readers to notice. As you can
identify in this article, Florence wears a black outfit to combine
with her red dyed hair. This combination gives the readers a feeling that she is unique and
also independent. Moreover, she wears black heels to make her look tall and superior in this
article and looking into the camera professionally.
TitleThe main title in this double page spread, is portrayed
excellently by having a text ‘USA’ in capitals and in a
much bigger font then the rest of the main heading.
The title also blends in with the background which is
grey. This technique is used so that the title stands out
more. The rest of the heading ‘got the love’ is in a
smaller calligraphy which signifies the feminine and
fancy representation. There is also a hint that this article is targeted at the females by
the use of a fancy font for ‘got the love’. This grabs the
female readers to find out more about Florence.
IntroductionIn this article, there is a small introduction
paragraph. In the introduction paragraph, there is a full name, ‘Florence Welch’ highlighted in blue to
symbolize that it is the artist’s name and also as she is the main topic, the company wants to focus on
her. This article makes the readers have a first read of what the article is trying to say about Florence. If the readers finds the article interesting on their first
read, they will read further on to find out more information about Florence.
Colour SchemeIn this double page spread, the colour scheme is black,
red, grey and white. The background is a mixture of
white and grey which gives it a peaceful feeling to the
readers and also makes the readers focus more of the image and texts written
about Florence. This method is added into this article so that they are not drawing
their attention away from the article. The double page
spread has a similar colour scheme of red, black and white which is the house
style of this article. As you can see, Florence dyed her hair red which symbolizes
love or danger. There is also red on the sheet she is
sitting on, this emphasises that she is linked with the sheet as she is sitting on it
comfortably. The use of black clothing contracts very well
with the background by making the main image
(Florence) stand out and also have a consist colour
scheme throughout the magazine to match the
background and the texts. The colour black and red are a good combination which makes the article look bold towards the readers. These two colours gives a ‘raw’ feeling as it looks clear.
Start of the ArticleAt the start of the article, there is big letter ‘D’ to let the readers know that where the article starts and
that is from where they have to read to find out Florence’s life story. The black letter ‘D’ stands out as it is used in a fancy calligraphy font and make it
look bold so it catches the readers’ eyes.
