The roles of a mother are numerous and varied. She is the manager of the home and the laundry lady. She is a janitor and a van driver. She is a psychologist and a nurse. She is a computer operator, a cook and a day care worker. In addition to all of that, a mother is the first, and often the best, teacher a child will ever have. If you paid her for what she does, moms are worth at least $70,000 per year. If you add to her resume the fact that she is a virtuous woman, her value is far above rubies. (See Proverbs 31:10.)
Let’s Talk about Mothers as Teachers
My friend, Pam Smoak, and her husband, Richard, serve as missionaries to Tanzania. When they were raising their son, Gordon, they lived in an area where going off to school was not an option, so Sis. Smoak home-schooled. To make it more realistic and academic, there was a ritual. Gordon would kiss his Mommy goodbye and walk out the back door. He would walk around the house and knock on the front door. His teacher, “Mrs. Smoak,” would then open the door, greet her pupil, and Gordon would start school. Sis. Smoak is a registered nurse, so I’m quite sure Gordon got a great education. I’ve always respected the way she took her roles as mother and teacher so seriously.
How Do Mothers Teach?
Mothers teach, first of all, by example. It should be assumed that the value of a father as teacher is also extremely important, but this article is about mothers!
Notice how mothers as teachers are viewed from the clinical perspective: “The most important lessons in language development are not learned in school but at home with Mother. The interaction between mother and child during the first three years of life is so specialized and unique that it is referred to in clinical research as “Motherese.”
When a mother speaks to her young child, she regulates the structure and the content of her input to her child’s level of understanding. So, when a mother speaks to her very young language learner, she uses one or two word utterances, she repeats herself many times, and she uses objects within the environment that her child can see.
A mother also assumes that her child may not understand everything, which provides an explanation for, not only her patience, but her repetitiveness. When describing an action or an object to her child, she looks at her child, then at the object and then back at her child. She shows the child the object, manipulates the object and then offers the object to the child. She always gets down to the child’s level of vision.”1
A mother’s role as a teacher is vital for many reasons including her availability to her child in what experts call “windows of opportunity” for learning. “Vision, hearing, language, movement, problem solving -- each of the areas of your baby’s brain responsible for different abilities has a sensitive period for development. During these prime times, your child’s brain is most ready to make connections for learning new skills. These critical periods are called “windows of opportunity” because, during these times, parents have the opportunity to work with nature to help their baby develop the abilities she is acquiring.”2
How Do Godly Mothers Affect Spiritual Formation?
The mother of the Old Testament leader, Moses, must have been an engaging and effective teacher. At birth, Moses had to be hidden from the Egyptians. If he had been discovered, his life would have been ended immediately. Pharaoh’s daughter discovered the baby and adopted him. Miriam, the sister of Moses, offered to find a nurse for the infant. Who would be more qualified than Moses’ mother, Jochabed? As his mother-teacher, Jochabed significantly shaped Moses in his early childhood to the point that he chose to suffer affliction with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. (See Hebrews 11:25.)
Timothy was a young minister in the New Testament church. His father was not a Christian, but his mother and grandmother were solid saints, serving the Lord without the support of a godly head of the home. From childhood, Timothy was taught the Bible by Lois and Eunice, and what he learned was able to make him wise “unto salvation.” (See 1 Timothy 1:5.)
The time a mother spends teaching her child is an investment that pays eternal dividends. Bible truths conveyed in stories and songs create strong pathways in the young mind and shape the heart of the child. Teaching the Bible on the child’s level and talking about God in normal conversation develop both mental and spiritual formation.
Mothers are worth more than can be calculated by valuing the variety of jobs they do. When you shape your child’s mind in the ways of God, you are saving yourself from heartache. More importantly, you are saving your child from trouble in life and from an eternity separated from God.
To the mothers who recognize that their most important role is as a teacher, thank you! May the Lord grant you a blessed Mother’s Day.
